I suppose if we want to send all the properties to elasticsearch, but only have it index specific ones we can apply the keep words token filter to relationships.properties, i'm not seeing anything obvious for relationships itself. There's another example that is **44 Mb is size** serialized. Kafka is capable of handling that, but it's not great in dealing with very large messages, so we can't increase the cap indefinitely. TASK DESCRIPTIONAfter we've started posting the job events into #eventbus and Kafka, we've noticed that some of them were rejected by Kafka because of MESSAGE_SIZE_TOO_LARGE error. The limit was increased from 1 Mb to 4Mb, but even after the increase some events are still sometimes rejected. Digging deeper I've found that there are some enormously large jobs.

Example 17 Mb in size originally, I've shortened it.

the current icons measure something around 24*24 px
the solutions favored before would lose clarity in details
the screenshot attached shows two ways factoring in the original size:
the upper row shows a constraint-like/connecting shape and makes it visually loses connectivity the more severe it gets
the lower row shows more general ways to go, while Jan mentioned we would need to be careful on that road as there might come more icons for other warnings later

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation! Makes sense, and helped me very much to understand the motivation better.

The main reason why I brought this up is: a text link needs localization, and the length of these localized texts might be very different in different languages. The text might be so long that it always wraps to the next line. Is this taken into account? Is this acceptable? An icon would not have this problem.

Could, at least, that part have something to do with T164173, as a problem from the same cause, or a consequence of the fix? I also remember some tunning of some wikidata crons or job size, but not sure if upwards or downwards and not sure if related. Aaron, Ladsgroup or Daniel may know if that could have impacted positively or negatively or can have further actionables.

I would agree with Thiemo and prefer an icon as well. I'm also happy to see discussions about that topic. Here is why an icon is not ideal in this special case:


The "help" link is already part of a pop up box
usually a question mark icon opens a pop up as seen in the screenshots below
a question mark icon would suggest to open another pop up on top of the pop up, which is not ideal from a user's and probably also dev perspective
choosing a text link on the right side keeps the expectations to the following action open, which is why it was decided to handle it like seen above

I did some more number crunching on the instances of runJob.php I'm running on terbium, I found what follows:

Wikibase refreshlinks jobs might benefit from being in smaller batches, as many of those are taking a long time to execute. Out of 33.4k wikibase jobs, we had the following distribution of timings:

As you can see, about 10% of jobs take 50 seconds or higher to execute, and about 64% take more than 5 seconds to execute, while I think it should be expected to have 99% of the jobs execute within 5 seconds. Also, I could see these jobs easily exceeding the maxtime of Jobrunner::Run, which is set to 30 seconds in production.

Also, there is no way with the current jobqueue to schedule jobs from wikis with more backlog than others, so for example jobrunner submitted only 250 batches/server for refreshLinks on commons yesterday,  way less than the number posted for itwiki (around 350/400 per server), whose queue is 4k elements long right now, versus the 680k elements in the queue for commonswiki. This resulted in a total of 37.1k refreshLinks jobs for commonswiki being executed by the jobrunner infrastructure in a full day.

For comparison, my three threads on terbium completed a total of 35.7k jobs in the same interval.

It is pretty clear that unless we have a better scheduler or manual ways to control the jobqueue processing priority, there is no way we can recover a 700k items lag anytime soon.

No, constraint checks are currently a fairly “external” feature – they’re done when users visit an item, or after they’ve saved a statement, and only for users who have the checkConstraints gadget enabled. There are plans to enable the gadget by default (T173695), and to check constraints before saving, too (T168626), but we don’t plan to make that mandatory.

ConstraintCheck/SparqlHelper in Wikidata currently has a timeout of 5 seconds. Presumably in order to support some of the more complex regular expressions and larger input texts.

That’s not really the main reason – we also use the query service for type checking: is some item an instance of some class or a subclass of it? We try to do this check in PHP at first, but if that takes too long (e. g. because the type hierarchy is too deep, too branched, or even circular), we bail out and ask the query service instead. For just the regexes, I’d be fine with a much shorter timeout.

Response times look fairly good in Graphite (source).

Wow, I didn’t know about that thing. Nice! (Looks like I can configure the graph by tweaking the URL even though visiting https://graphite.wikimedia.org/ gets me an authentication error :) )

The minutely p99 over the last 5 days ranges from 100-500ms… This is okay.

By the way, what’s the round-trip time for memcached assuming a cache hit? If it’s, dunno, 100 ms, then the patch is probably not worth the trouble :)

(And @Jonas, perhaps we can switch the average times in the Grafana board from mean to median? Those graphite stats look a lot less serious than the Grafana board.)

I wonder if something like a "simple" PHP or Python subprocess would work (something that runs preg_match or re.match, using tight firejail with cgroup restrictions, like other MediaWiki subprocesses).

Hehe, I’ve actually written a service like that :) we have a test system for constraints on Cloud VPS (wikidata-constraints.wmflabs.org), and it doesn’t have enough RAM to run Blazegraph, so I wrote minisparql, which just listens for regex SPARQL queries and checks them with preg_match. Of course, if we were to do something like this on Wikidata itself, we could skip the SPARQL wrapping. But I have no idea how much trouble it is to deploy a new service like that…

Yeah, the different pattern flavors are a problem… the situation is already unfortunate because WDQS doesn’t quite implement PCRE either, but at least it’s similar. Lua Patterns seem to be completely different. Thanks for bringing this up @Ladsgroup. The thing that's been bugging me the most is that for more as a fairly new person it is not really clear which of all of those libs are something I should feel responsible for, and what. Having this information better included in on (and off-) boarding process is something that should definitely happen, IMO. I am mean both the more "administrative" part (give/revoke people all required permissions), but also the more "awareness" part, i.e. to make new folks aware and familiar what are the components, where they are, what for, etc.
The number of all those libs, and the fact of them being scatter around many places is clearly not making things easier. I partly agree, but note that what you said is not covered by this ticket.


The most well maintained list of components is at http://wikiba.se/components/.
I believe that having lots of smaller libraries is not a problem in itself. The contrary. I believe it's a good thing to split independent clusters of code off into independent libraries. I wish we would do this much, much more often. One recent attempt can be seen at https://github.com/DataValues/Text. The problem is more that these components are scattered around on Gerrit and different GitHub organizations.
I want us to merge some of the libraries we maintain for a long time:
Some of the minor #DataValues components should just be merged (excluding Geo, Number, Text, and Time).
ValueView should just be merged into the Wikibase View directory.

That is absolutely correct. There is a TODO in MwTimeIsoFormatter to replace the hard coded string with a message: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/diffusion/EWBA/browse/master/lib/includes/Formatters/MwTimeIsoFormatter.php;6b923f763265e45f8cc008b49e43eff5ddad74bf$282. The message should be something like "$1 BCE". Such a message currently doesn't exist, just a bunch of "wikibase-time-precision-BCE-…" messages used by both MwTimeIsoFormatter as well as MwTimeIsoParser. The new message should be next to the existing ones.

Note that all date formats must round-trip! This means either MwTimeIsoParser or an other parser we have (e.g. YearTimeParser) must be able to parse all localized versions of BCE dates the MwTimeIsoFormatter outputs. I believe the best approach is to create a new version of an EraParser that knows about the BCE message introduced above (and must live in the lib directory because of this). That new parser would try to detect the message, and fall back to the existing EraParser if it couldn't find a localized one.

deboosting can happen in the rescore stage, since we use a weighted sum we can either apply a negative penalty when relationship:P31:Q4167410 or a positive value when  NOT relationship:P31:Q4167410.
Will we add all properties or just a set of selected properties?
Concerning cardinality of this new field it's hard to judge but I'm in favor of not over-indexing, in this case I'd be for a simple mapping like:

In other words for P31:Q4167410 I'd keep only P31:Q4167410 and P31 as indexed terms, imo id does not make sense to index Q4167410 separately.

One possibility to avoid reindexing from mysql every-time we want to add a new property would be to create a custom analyzer where we provide a white list of properties to index.
All properties would present in the source doc but just a few selected ones would be indexed. Adding a new property would just require to update the analysis chain and perform an in-place re-index.
We then need to carefully monitor disk and terms in mem usage when whitelisting new props.
