[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T284915: add info about language names to description of "language codes" project

2021-07-11 Thread Esc3300
Esc3300 added a comment.

Oddly, it seems that the autonym is irrelevant for Wikidata. Wikidata makes
uses primarily of the English name of a language and name, depending on user
preferences, the language name in other interface language.

Accordingly, questions about autonyms should probably only be in a
"monitoring" column, maybe "monitoring (autonym)".
#mediawiki-internationalization
 or
#i18n may be the primary projects
for these. I should update the above.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T284915: add info about language names to description of "language codes" project

2021-06-14 Thread Esc3300
Esc3300 created this task.
Esc3300 added projects: Language codes, Wikidata.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.

TASK DESCRIPTION
Add details about "language names" to the #language_codes
 project page
: where to define, how
to update. Below a draft of information to add. Please help complete it.

  -

  Language names
  --

As a code is assigned for language, this can't be done without specifying its
name: autonym and/or English name.

Further, Wikidata makes use of a names of all languages in every other
language. Many of the later are primarily used by (and regularly displayed on)
Wikidata. So the lack of such names and inconsistent naming may only surface
there.

Generally a language name would be consistent with the title of the article
in the Wikipedia of the relevant language and the label of the Wikidata item.
Sample:

  - the language with the code "it" has its English Wikipedia article at
"Italian_language"
  - and the English label of the Wikidata item about the language is "Italian"
.
  - Accordingly, the name "Italian" would be consistent in English. This is
what {{#language:it|en}} displays in Wikimedia websites and this is what
appears in Wikidata termbox before Italian labels when viewed in English.
Help:Wikimedia_language_codes/lists/all
 has
summary of names in English and French, both from Wikidata labels and the
{{#language}} function.

As language codes are defined in several places, the same goes for language
names:

  - ..

If a language name should be added or corrected, please create a ticket
referencing the relevant Wikidata item.
