Hi Jan,

Things seem fine on the Hungarian Wikipedia except for a few
hickups/bugs and missing things that are being worked on now. Maybe
some of the people from the Hungrian Wikipedia who are on this list
want to chime in as well.
The planned date for the next deployment (on the Italian and Hebrew
Wikipedias) is 30th of this month.

And what time you think is best to disable interwiki bots?

We can't give a definite time unfortunately. Previous deployments were
done in the late evening UTC. If everything goes as planned it'll be
similar again.

> And what time you think is best to disable interwiki bots?

That's really up to the individual community. You could do it at some
point on Wednesday but you could also wait and do it a few days later
(which would probably mean some of them will put links back that an
editor removed already).

Xqt can modify the code, but pywiki is not deployed, it is updated by bot
owners, so there is no chance to focus it on one hour. For this reason I
would say to begin it after deployment of Wikibase as otherwise one should
do it at least 1 or 2 days before which would cause a maintenance pause.
Yes, people will try to remove iws and some of them will be put back by
bots.

Would it also make sense to write a bot putting the remaining iws to wikidata

AFAIK there are many iw-bots and several others.

I don't think that there are iw-bots doing anything else as well. It would not
be very useful now. But acually I don't know it. If yes, blocking those
specific ones might be a good idea.

We really ought to change it to dynamic:

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&meta=wikibase
(thanks duh)

If there is no error, wikibase is present, disable. This way no update to
the blacklist is needed. The query should be re-issued every 30 min to make
sure it hasn't changed.

The sad part is that interwiki bot needs to be significantly reworked, so
there is no big incentive to do any changes like this to it. It should be
aware of wikidata, remove all data unless it is not in wikidata, etc. Lots
of heuristical changes.

That's a very interesting idea when i check this:
http://fa.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&meta=wikibase
we can make a call for a bot to check every wiki but for now i think there
is a very few wikis updated on wikidata so I don't think it's very good
idea right now but for the future it's the only option so I'll work on it
but not now

I guess it only makes sense if the deployment will be few languages at a
time. If at some point you will start switching them in bulk, it might make
sense not to do it.

Re: [Wikidata-l] phase 1 live on the English Wikipedia

2013-02-14 Thread Amir E. Aharoni
I prefer to make the API call and not to check by a list of languages.

Several reasons:
1. It's more robust in general.
2. Wikibase extension, as well as pywikipedia, can be used on other wikis, too.
3. There are dark corners in Wikimedia wikis - non-standard codes,
redirects, locked wikis, non-language wikis (Commons, Outreach etc.)
It's possible that these are out of the bots' scope, but checking the
API will still make it more robust.

Actually when wikidata is running on all wikis we only have to remove
the iw-links inside all articles of the same wikidata item. The bots

We really ought to communicate with the bot owners to significantly modify
their bots. It might even make sense to stop them all together until they
can be re-designed to take wikidata into account. I could post a comment on
most boards to ask IW bots to stop (and to notify the local communities

Re: [Wikidata-l] phase 1 live on the English Wikipedia

2013-02-14 Thread Yuri Astrakhan
I think it might take some time to rewrite and test the new interwiki bot.
If the bot operators simply download the latest version, they will continue
running the old one until its fixed. If we plan to deploy wikidata to all
sites soon, there is really no point in running IW bots any more until
their logic is substantially changed.

I think it might take some time to rewrite and test the new interwiki

running

IW bots any more until their logic is substantially changed.

Note that we will still need "traditional" IW bots on non-Wikipedia
projects for the foreseeable future.

Bot owners on en:wp have been notified. I'm happy to work with you on
a message to more of them. Let's do that off-list to keep the traffic
down if you want.

Latest update: planned for March 6th. I'll prepare a message to the

We have also deployed new code here including a lot of bugfixes,
localization updates and a new data type: string. It is supposed to
mainly be used for things like ISBN and similar identifiers.
Some of the other bugfixes/changes you might care about:
* improved diff view
* fixed issue with ZWNJ (https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45111)
* improved the item view to better handle deleted properties

Please let me know if there are any questions or problems.

2013-03-07 Thread Jan Dudík
Nice work,
but there are still no suitable pywikipedia bots (and I reminded it
again from november), so new articles from last month are not on
wikidata (bots werent able to add them nor to en.wiki) and some people
are complaining about it

2013-03-07 Thread Amir Ladsgroup
@JAnD
We had a similar problem but the problem is solved in Persian Wikipedia,
One of my friends (reza) wrote a code to add iw from new pages of Persian
Wikipedia to Wikidata. I can share you the code if you want to

Or Maybe I can make the code a general code (It's a very hard-coded code)
for almost every language and I run it on all of wikis
