Unfortunately I don't know how this is activated, if we are talking about
the search box available top-right (using the Vector skin on rtl languages)
then I thought it was activated by default. If you are talking about other
search boxes like the main one in Special:Search then it's not enabled
there because not supported IIRC.
I'm not very familiar with wikibase internals therefor I can't help much on
this issue, sorry.

Ok, as I understand I need a more up to date version. So far I'm playing around 
the 1_33 release because that is the latest release for Mediawiki / Wikibase.

You raised the right issue : I've checked in chrome's console, and the XHR sent

Yes indeed these plugins are needed by CirrusSearch when Wikibase
integration is enabled, we definitely need to improve the documentation.

The classic page model and wikibase model are completely different and this
is a real challenge to provide a seamless and integrated search experience
for both types of data. The consensus was to provide an "optimized" query
for the wikibase model only if the namespaces requested do include Items
types.
Example:
- searching on a Item and Property namespace: wikibase optimized
- searching on Help and Item: warning displayed (your version), wikidata
production version: fallback to the classic wiki model
- searching on the default namespaces: it's dependent on your wiki
configuration, if you don't setup the list of searched namespaces according
to this limitation you will see this warning message for default searches

In other words: wgNamespacesToBeSearchedDefault[1] needs to be configured
in a way that does not mix Item/Property namespaces with
Wikipage namespaces.

No it's not, it is language dependent, every language has a list of
fallback and french is not a fallback for english, but english is a
fallback for french. When searching in english there are no guarantees that
the ranking nor the data displayed will be the same. This was done to
address the ambiguities between languages, e.g. when searching for "or" in
french you would like to see Gold but if you were english you would perhaps
expect something else.

So, following your advices, this is what my LocalSettings.php looks like now :

I added the debug log line because unfortunately, I get an error message when 
trying to search for something. This is what the error.log file shows :

This code has been extracted in WikibaseCirrusSearch but during a
transition period we kept the same code in both extensions (Wikibase and
WikibaseCirrusSearch), enabling this code in both Wikibase and
WikibaseCirrusSearch might lead to such error.
If my assumption is correct setting "disableCirrus" to true in the Wikibase
settings array might solve the problem as it will disable the CirrusSearch
integration code present in Wikibase letting the one present in
WikibaseCirrusSearch works (enabled with $wgWBCSUseCirrus = true).
If not: having the exact version (or git revision hash) of these 3
extensions will help.

2/ By removing one of the two options you'll certainly end-up
enabling/disabling CirrusSearch

3/ Yes in general you should run updateSearchIndexConfig.php and
forceSearchIndex.php when enabling the extension, please see the README
file in Cirrus, there are no specific maint script for the wikibase cirrus
integration.

Yes, WikibaseCirrusSearch can be tricky to install.  I'd recommend asking

Hello,

I'm having a hard time setting up Cirrus Search on my Mediawiki / Wikibase 
instance, I'm quite confused so I thought I could ask for some help. :)

First, I followed the instructions to install both CirrusSearch and 
WikibaseCirrusSearch (WBCS) extensions, but I don't really know what my 
LocalSettings.php config file should look like.
On one hand, CirrusSearch asks for this option`$wgSearchType = 
'CirrusSearch';`, on the other hand WBCS asks for `$wgWBCSUseCirrus = true;`. 
When I put them both, I get a php error :
