[WikiEducator] Book Chapters on Reserve/On-line
In the old days (pre-internet), in addition to putting books physically on reserve, we sometimes use to photocopy a portion of a book and leave that on reserve for students to check out and possibly photocopy. How about today? If I where to scan ten or so pages from a book and put these pages on Blackboard or a web page that is only available to students (not publicly available) could that be considered fair use or is that a violation of the copyright of the material? Thanks; -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups WikiEducator group. Re: [WikiEducator] Book Chapters on Reserve/On-line
Hi Ivan, Register for the next Open Content Licensing for Educators http://wikieducator.org/OCL4Edworkshop :-). This is a free professional development opportunity on OER, Copyright and Creative Commons. This will be a great way to find answers to your questions and to meet new friends from around the world! In short you will need to consult your national copyright act to identify whether there are any specific educational exceptions which would cover the practice you suggest. However, in most countries, restricting access to students for scanned copies of all-rights reserved texts would not qualify as fair dealing -- format shifting is not permitted under standard copyright. Your institution may participate in a licensing arrangement, which in return for a fee, may permit these activities (But this is not a fair dealing / fair usage practice.) [WikiEducator] Can you test drive an idea for me?
Hi folks, I have a coyote skull project shaping up. If anyone would be willing to try measuring some skulls online I'd appreciate it. Just follow the instruction here: http://wikieducator.org/Coyote/Project_tools#Measuring_from_photographs Pick a skull from here: http://wikieducator.org/Category:Skull and measure total length or width. Post your results and comment on the discussion page for the skull in question. I'd like to see if the instructions make sense. I'm also open to ideas for ways to use the data set.
