2021-10-31 Thread Yaroslav Blanter
Yes, I already figured this out trying to add images OF a building, not
FROM the building.

Still, P18 could work with qualifiers, but I guess new properties is a
better route. If you propose them please let me know (my account is
ymblanter). Or we could have some brainstorming here.

Not P8517, it is meant for images FROM a place, not OF a place.

The views are obviously eligible for WLM, but it is not trivial to add them
to a Wikidata item consistently right now. We might need some new
properties.

Actually, thinking more about it: views of the same building from different
sides (also also from the inner yard) must be eligible as well. What would
be the best practice? P8517 (view) using different qualifiers?

2021-10-30 Thread Éder Porto F Alves
I have a list of 14 image related properties that we are considering to declare
"this monument had no image at the start of the contest" in WLM Brasil:

  *   P18 (image)
  *   P3311 (plan view image)
  *   P4291 (panoramic view)
  *   P4640 (photosphere image)
  *   P8517 (view)
  *   P1442 (image of grave)
  *   P1766 (place name sign)
  *   P1801 (commemorative plaque image)
  *   P3451 (nighttime view)
  *   P5252 (winter view)
  *   P5775 (image of interior)
  *   P8592 (aerial view)
  *   P9721 (image of entrance)
  *   P9906 (inscription image)

We have them in a fallback relation. Video is something that we didn't consider
this year, good idea! Winter view in Brazil rarely have snow, unfortunatelly,
and I feel kinda "guilt" by using images taken between June and September in
this property, haha.

Good contributions,

It may be easier to start these tables with the UNESCO heritage sites? Those
are usually pretty well photographed, and then it's more a matter of filling
the gaps.

For a lot of 'smaller' sites a bunch of these types may not be applicable
(which is fine), in which case it may be nice to have some way to explicitly
define 'none'. For example entrance.

Funny that we have something for Winter view, but not for other seasons? :)
Very Northern hemisphere perspective...

Without looking at the table, I guess for Wikidata we have just one property,
which is P18:Image. Normally, it is only one image which is used with this
property, very seldom two (e.g. exterior / interior), sometimes people add
dozens of images to the same item but this is clearly abuse. We do not have

2021-10-30 Thread effe iets anders
It may be easier to start these tables with the UNESCO heritage sites?
Those are usually pretty well photographed, and then it's more a matter of
filling the gaps.

For a lot of 'smaller' sites a bunch of these types may not be applicable
(which is fine), in which case it may be nice to have some way to
explicitly define 'none'. For example entrance.

Funny that we have something for Winter view, but not for other seasons? :)
Very Northern hemisphere perspective...

 One very interesting aspect that was touched upon today (I don't
 remember in which session) was the notion of going a bit deeper than just
 getting the first image of a monument.

 That got me inspired to experiment with this listeria list that uses
 many more relevant image properties. (Sorry for the Swedish but the SPARQL
 query in the wikitext should be language neutral.)

You should have looked :) It turns out we have plenty of image properties:
https://w.wiki/4Jw2

Of these 47 the following were interesting:

panoramic view http://www.wikidata.org/entity/P4291
photosphere image http://www.wikidata.org/entity/P4640
winter view http://www.wikidata.org/entity/P5252
image of interior http://www.wikidata.org/entity/P5775
aerial view http://www.wikidata.org/entity/P8592
image of entrance http://www.wikidata.org/entity/P9721
video http://www.wikidata.org/entity/P10

that I'm using in my table. Not many in my example monument list have
several of these, so there's a lot to do.

 Thanks Bodhi, they were very interesting sessions!

 I checked with the organisation and WMDE will have them all available
 through their YT channel later, but since they are recording the whole
 WikidataCon weekend, it will take some time to edit and upload all of the
 material. They will become available in due time on the WMDE YT
  channel,
 and I assume they'll be uploaded on Commons as well.

 Today's sessions were:
 * Wikidata in Ireland, WLM and beyond! (Rebecca O'Neill)
 * Structured data, structured photos – SDC for WLM (Alicia Fagerving)
 * Structured contest data for campaigns (Susanna Ånä)
 * Wikidata at the heart of Wiki Loves Monuments: a Brazilian experience
 (Éder Port)
 * Field photography in Bahia, Brazil before and after Wikidata as a
 tool to organize Wiki Loves Monuments in Brazil (Paul Burley)
 * Wiki Loves Monuments discussion (Rebecca, Paul, Éder)

 I think most if not all of you are on this mailing list, and I want to
 thank you for sharing your work and enthusiasm about our photo competition

Without looking at the table, I guess for Wikidata we have just one
property, which is P18:Image. Normally, it is only one image which is used
with this property, very seldom two (e.g. exterior / interior), sometimes
people add dozens of images to the same item but this is clearly abuse. We
do not have properties for different types of images, such as panoramic
view, architectural details, interior, historic images etc. I also do not
think this classification is in any way built into Structural Commons. On
Commons, sometimes we are relying on categories, but often we just have one
category with several hundred files. Should we try to make this distinction
between the images on the structural level?

If I read the table correctly, it shows (lack of) different images:
overview, panorama, close-up, interior, entrance, video. That is a nice
challenge indeed, thanks for sharing the query Jan!

I remember when we did variations like this in NL, and awarded a special
prize for the best detailed image of a monument, a special prize for an
aerial image of a monument (drones!), or for an overview series of max 10
images of one monument. This query would be very helpful for those kinds of
extra prizes.
