[Wikimedia-l] Visiting Wikimedian for the Wikimedia Conference 2018

2017-09-20 Thread Cornelius Kibelka
Hi all,

In preparation for the upcoming Wikimedia Conference 2018 – which will take
place from April 20 to 22 in Berlin, Germany[1] – we again launch a call
for a “Visiting Wikimedian”. This initiative aims to transfer practical
knowledge from the German chapter to other Wikimedia movement affiliates
and provides us with an outside view.

The scope of a “Visiting Wikimedian” is mainly to support the organization
of the Wikimedia Conference in terms of logistics and program. The
“Visiting Wikimedian” will be involved in all essential steps of the
planning and organizing process and will be able to contribute in multiple
ways. We are open to designing the tasks together, according to the
Visiting Wikimedian’s skills and experiences and her or his affiliate’s
needs. We are especially looking for a person who can apply the knowledge
to an upcoming event, for example if the affiliate is hosting a regional or
international conference.

You can find more information about the initiative on Meta.[2] Teele Vaalma
(Visiting Wikimedian from Wikimedia Estonia in 2016, [3]) and Davit Saroyan
(Visiting Wikimedian from Wikimedia Armenia in 2017, [4]) have both written
blog posts about their experience.

If you are interested in becoming a Visiting Wikimedian, please reach out /
apply to me directly
until 8 October (incl.).

Best regards,
Cornelius

It could visually be similar, but I'm mostly interesting in similar
functionality. It would be similar in that it would only be some users that
would have an identified (verified) account. It would be different in that
the users themselves would be able to do the necessary actions to make
their accounts identified (verified).

Sure. A relatively easy option for "identifying" users, which has been

Yes, there are several systems we could use, but I would rather only use
systems that allow highly trustworthy authentication.

Proof of control over a specific account on Twitter or Facebook can be used
as a less trustworthy authentication, that is proof of authorization to use
an account, but that won't imply identification.

The three point are not about identification, but about identifiers and how
to use them. Nice ideas, but outside the scope of my question. Tagging of
roles is also outside the scope of my question.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] WMF position on SESTA/ Sec 230?

2017-09-20 Thread Jan Gerlach
Hi David and Patrik

We're closely watching developments around SESTA. As we explain on the public
policy portal , we
strongly support intermediary liability protections, such as CDA 230, which
are of existential importance to community driven platforms like Wikipedia.
We rely on such rules to ensure we can continue to be a neutral host of
content that can stay away from editorial decisions. In other words, the
rules allow us to defer to community consensus on editorial decisions. The
SESTA bill is problematic because it is written too broadly, as the EFF
describes
,
and would open up states to write more laws that affect website hosts.

On the EFF's campaign page , Katherine Maher
briefly explains our views on CDA 230. We are in conversations with several
advocacy groups who are focusing on the SESTA bill and have submitted a
letter to the Senate in which we explain our concerns. We shared an update

about that with the public policy mailing list. We invite you to discuss
the issue with other Wikimedians on that list, if you'd like. Please join
the list if
you'd like to receive further updates and join the conversation.

Best,

Jan

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Foundation Office Move

2017-09-20 Thread Jaime Villagomez
Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation’s lease at 149 New Montgomery is expiring this
month. We announced our intention to move the Foundation to a new office
space in our published 2017-18 Annual Plan and are now pleased to pass
along some exciting news and important updates about our relocation to the
One Montgomery Tower in San Francisco, California.[1]

This new location is only a few blocks from our current office. The
building is a gold LEED Certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design) building,[2] allowing us to reduce our environmental footprint. We
will all be on the same floor supporting our office space priorities for
collaboration and reducing our square footage making the move cost neutral.

Our 149 New Montgomery office will be closed for two weeks (September 18 -
September 30) to finalize the move to this new space. During that time, The
San Francisco staff will be working remotely. The move team has spent the
last several months preparing and implementing a smooth transition with
minimal disruption to our work and responsibilities. We will reopen in the
new office space on October 2.

We have posted more information on Meta-Wiki about this new space and the
final move timeline:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_headquarters

Please allow me this opportunity to extend a special thank you to the
members of the Wikimedia Foundation staff, and particularly the Finance and
Facilities teams, who provided input during this process.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia France short update

2017-09-20 Thread Nathan
The site visit report is disturbing, especially with respect to the
potential for hundreds of thousands of euros to be missing or unaccounted
for since 2015. How is it that the FDC provided any funds to WMFR while
that issue was still unresolved? Was the FDC aware of the legacy payable
from the chapter payment processing era when it made its most recent
funding decisions?
