Re: [Wikimedia-l] [foundation-optional] A difficult goodbye

2019-01-10 Thread Katherine Maher
Hi everyone,

Many in the community may not have the chance to have met Victoria, so I
want to start by sharing my thanks for her work. The Technology department
at the Wikimedia Foundation does many things, but most simply understood,
they're the ones who keep our projects running, every day of the year, rain
or shine. Unless you're a technical contributor or lurk on IRC, you may not
interact with them in the same way you do with other parts of the
Foundation. But they're utterly critical to Wikimedia, and for the past two
years, Victoria has led this essential department.

When Victoria joined, the Foundation had not had a dedicated CTO in many
years. She spent the better part of the past two years as a tireless
advocate for the work of the Technology department, transforming disparate
pieces into a coherent and compelling program structure. Victoria has never
stopped marveling at how much the department had accomplished on a
shoestring. Together, we worked to try and extend the length of that
shoestring, building out the structures of a team that is increasingly
diverse and incredibly dedicated to the work. Many teams now are in
positions to be much more forward-looking than in many years, with space to
take on new challenges. There’s certainly more to do, but thanks to these
efforts we have a better sense of the ambitious targets that we still need
to reach in service of our mission.

With so much important work to do, we're already planning for a new CTO.
We'll begin preparations for the search immediately, and should launch
formally in February. In the meantime, I am truly grateful to our current
Director of Search Platform Engineering, Erika Bjune, for stepping up to
take on the role of interim CTO. We know this search will likely be on the
longer side, given our unique mission and structure. As such, please engage
with Erika as a full acting CTO, who will keep critical decisions and
programs moving forward. Fortunately, Victoria has also volunteered to stay
on in a consulting role, in order to provide additional support during the
transition and in annual planning. This puts us in a good place, and from
the community, we anticipate you won't even notice a change.

Of course, even though I'm sad Victoria is leaving, I am thrilled that not
only are her skills and experience being recognized but that she is putting
them to such meaningful use at another mission-oriented organization -- and
please do join me in congratulating Victoria on her new role!

We wish you the very best in this next move, and like everyone, warn you
that you’ll never truly be a former Wikimedian!

organization that does public service.

I've appreciated that you have been consistently responsive and polite in

[Wikimedia-l] A difficult goodbye

2019-01-10 Thread Victoria Coleman
Dear all,

I have some difficult news to share.

A few months ago and completely out of the blue, an opportunity came up for me
to exercise the full spectrum of my skills as the CEO of an early stage mission
oriented startup. It has been a mighty struggle between my commitment to my
team, the Foundation and the movement and this opportunity to bring all my
skills to bear and build something from the ground up to do good in the world.
I will not lie to you - it has not been easy. But ultimately I decided that I
have to give it a go and I accepted the offer. I plan on starting there on Feb
4th so my last day at the Foundation will be Feb 1st.

These past two years have been amongst the most enjoyable in my professional
career. I’ve enjoyed getting to know the movement and what fuels it and I’ve
been incredibly privileged to work with a Tech team like no other. We have
together strengthened the technical infrastructure of the movement and while
much work remains to be done we have a much stronger team in place to take the
mission to the next level. And I have personally made friendships that will
last a lifetime.

The organization I will be moving to is Atlas AI, a public benefit corporation
supported by the Rockefeller Foundation. I will be leading an exceptional team
of AI and earth system science experts striving for improvements in human well
being through data driven insights. Our focus areas are drawn from the UN’s
sustainable development goals of no poverty and zero hunger with emphasis on
Sub Saharan Africa.

I leave behind a Technology department that I am certain is well on the way to
achieving our vision to create the infrastructure for the free knowledge
movement. I am also pleased that during my tenure, we have built leaders who
are equipped to take on this challenge.

Erika Bjune will be serving as interim CTO. Erika joined us a little over two
years ago and she has distinguished herself as one of the finest people
leaders I have ever worked with. Both she and Katherine will have my ongoing
support — I will stay on in a consulting role to Erika on organizational
matters and for the mid term planning work we have ahead of us in the remainder
of the fiscal year. I know that I am leaving the Tech team in good hands until
a permanent CTO is hired.

I want to close this difficult message with my heartfelt thanks to all of you
for letting me be part of this incredible movement. Being a Wikimedian is a
great privilege. I wanted you to know that I’m not walking away from something;
I am walking towards something that is very important to me and the world. I
will miss you all. Deeply. Truly. And a lot!

[Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Research Showcase] Wednesday, January 16 at 11:30 AM PST, 19:30 UTC

2019-01-10 Thread Janna Layton
Hello, everyone,

The next Research Showcase, *Understanding participation in Wikipedia*,
will be live-streamed next Wednesday, January 16, at 11:30 AM PST/19:30
UTC. This presentation is about new editors.

YouTube stream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fc51jE_KNTc

As usual, you can join the conversation on IRC at #wikimedia-research. You
can also watch our past research showcases here:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Research/Showcase

This month's presentation:

*Understanding participation in Wikipedia: Studies on the relationship
between new editors’ motivations and activity*

By Martina Balestra, New York University

Peer production communities like Wikipedia often struggle to retain
contributors beyond their initial engagement. Theory suggests this may be
related to their levels of motivation, though prior studies either center
on contributors’ activity or use cross-sectional survey methods, and
overlook accompanied changes in motivation. In this talk, I will present a
series of studies aimed at filling this gap. We begin by looking at how
Wikipedia editors’ early motivations influence the activities that they
come to engage in, and how these motivations change over the first three
months of participation in Wikipedia. We then look at the relationship
between editing activity and intrinsic motivation specifically over time.
We find that new editors’ early motivations are predictive of their future
activity, but that these motivations tend to change with time. Moreover,
newcomers’ intrinsic motivation is reinforced by the amount of activity
they engage in over time: editors who had a high level of intrinsic
motivation entered a virtuous cycle where the more they edited the more
motivated they became, whereas those who initially had low intrinsic
motivation entered a vicious cycle. Our findings shed new light on the
importance of early experiences and reveal that the relationship between
motivation and activity is more complex than previously understood.

Captions can now be added to files on Commons. There's a bug with
abusefilter sending errors to new accounts adding captions, the bug is
being investigated and fixed right now. IRC office hours will be in a
little over one hour from now, I look forward to seeing you there if you
can attend.

[Wikimedia-l] [Google Summer of Code 2019 / Outreachy Round 18] Call for projects and mentors!

2019-01-10 Thread Derick Alangi
Hello everyone,

We are now recruiting projects to promote in Google Summer of Code 2019 and
Outreachy Round 18!

Both these programs have a similar timeline for the summer round. Accepted
candidates will work with mentors from May to August 2019.

Through both these programs, we bring new contributors to Wikimedia
technical projects. Browse through Outreach programs
 to learn more.

Earlier we promote the projects, better it works out for everyone. Students
get enough time to prepare their application, organization administrators
to do ample outreach and mentors to find a strong candidate for their
project.

If you are interested in mentoring a project, create a task on Phabricator
and tag it with #outreach-programs-projects
 and
#Google-Summer-of-Code (2019) or #Outreachy (Round 18). You can also choose
to mentor for projects already on outreach-program-projects

workboard. Remember, every project must have two mentors. Learn more about
the roles and responsibilities of a mentor
.

To get some idea of the nature of projects, see the completed Google Summer
of Code and Outreachy projects from last year
.

Help us spread the word about Wikimedia's participation in these programs
and looking forward to your participation! :)

Hello Nattes a' chat and Camilia,

That sounds wonderful! We are encouraging organizers to set up a page on
Commons with country code and I think what you suggested sounds fantastic.

And meta page for articles is a great idea. Let me know if any help is
needed from international team.

Best Regards,
Rupika

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Invitation from Wiki Loves Love 2019

2019-01-10 Thread Natacha Rault via Wikimedia-l
Hi, I spoke to Psychoslave and we thought we could contribute on the
francophone wikipedia by setting up a project page dedicated to contribution on
the subject of love ceremonies with a gender gap approach.

I am not very gifted in photographs, but maybe we could try to write articles
using the Wikiloves photographs?

If more projects are interested, we could even put up a page on meta. Maybe
Women in red, Wikimujeres and Wikidonne would like to participate with les sans
pagEs?

Sending you wikilove!

[Wikimedia-l] Participation in Celebrating Public Domain Day

2019-01-10 Thread Shani Evenstein
Dear all,

I'm forwarding a request from Natalia Mileszyk re participating in Public
Domain Day.
We hope you can spread the word in your local communities and join the
celebrations around the world!

Cheers,
Shani.

*JOIN COMMUNIA FOR THE PUBLIC DOMAIN WEEK *

On New Year’s Day, as every year, there is the Public Domain Day celebrated
– works of many great artists and scientists will come into the public
domain and will be available for access, use and re-distribute. You can
check the list of them at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_in_public_domain. But 2019 is also a
unique year (see below).

Therefore, we want to invite all organizations working for openness and
commons to celebrate with us Public Domain Week (January, 21-25). Some of
our partners will organize events this week (including Creative Commons in
the US, Centrum Cyfrowe in Poland), but we would love also to see other
things happening - your imagination is the limit. Maybe you want to
organise something? An event, a hackathon, a concert, a contest? Maybe you
want to help with internet outreach on the public domain? Publish something
on your blogs (Why public domain is important to you? How your readers can
contribute from the public domain?), give some love to the topic on social
media?

*We are not planning to coordinate this action too much (there won’t be any
new website etc., but cross-referencing is more than welcome!) nevertheless
please let us know (nmiles...@centrumcyfrowe.pl
) by January 16th if you’ll participate so we
can put you in touch with other contributors to the Public Domain Week.*

*Materials for the Public Domain Week:*
- graphics -
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1mCHyDQ6MCgmmkW93690hoLwQBpHwox_A?usp=sharing
- #publicdomain
- relaunching of the webpage with Public Domain Manifesto by January 21st
(we’re well aware that it looks really outdated) + all of the 24
translations of the manifesto (that are available at
http://publicdomainmanifesto.org/translations.html) will also be published
- check if your language is available!

*Why 2019 is so special? *
-We’ll celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Public Domain Manifesto (
http://www.publicdomainmanifesto.org/manifesto.html) endorsed by many
international organizations;
-In the US, ever since the 1998 Copyright Term Extension Act, no
published works have entered the public domain (well, none due to copyright
expiration). But for the first time in 20 years this January, tens of
thousands of books, films, visual art, sheet music, and plays published in
1923 will be free of intellectual property restrictions (
https://creativecommons.org/2018/12/05/join-us-for-a-grand-re-opening-of-the-public-domain/
)
-There is a chance that the public domain will be granted legal
protection in the new copyright directive, which is debated right now in
the EU (
https://www.communia-association.org/2018/12/21/copyright-reform-still-stalled-good-news-public-domain/
).

Best,
Natalia
