[Wikimedia-l] Celebrating 15 years of Wikimedia Ukraine

2024-05-31 Thread Anton Protsiuk
Hi all,

Today Wikimedia Ukraine, the nonprofit organization that supports Wikipedia
and free knowledge in Ukraine, turns 15.

We are really grateful to everyone in the Wikimedia movement who've
supported us and participated in our projects over the years – whether by
lending a hand at the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, by
writing about Ukraine on Wikipedia within Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy
Month or CEE Spring, by sharing your experience with us and learning from
ours, and in countless other ways.

To mark the anniversary, we prepared a brief Diff post listing ten of
Wikimedia Ukraine's achievements over the past years & four perspectives
about what WMUA means to our volunteers:
https://diff.wikimedia.org/2024/05/31/celebrating-15-years-of-wikimedia-ukraine/

We would love to hear your stories about Wikimedia Ukraine and its projects
if you have them. Share your memories on social media with the hashtag
#WMUA15 and tag us in your posts – https://x.com/wikimedia_ua;
https://www.facebook.com/Wikimedia.Ukraina/;
https://www.instagram.com/wikimedia_ukraine/.

Hope to see everyone at Wikimania 2030 in Kyiv ;)

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Ukraine's annual report for 2023

2024-03-22 Thread Anton Protsiuk
Hi all,

I’m writing to let you know that Wikimedia Ukraine published and submitted
our annual reports for 2023.

In 2023 we continued to live under Russia’s full-scale military invasion.
On the one hand, the past year was more stable than 2022, and we were able
to bring back many of the projects that had to be cancelled at the
beginning of the all-out war, as well as start brand-new ones. For example,
we brought back Ukraine’s local edition of the Wiki Loves Earth photo
contest, as well as CEE Spring and WikiGap article campaigns.

On the other hand, the war continued to have a significant negative impact
on the Ukrainian wiki community and its capacity, and as a result on
Wikimedia Ukraine’s work. At the same time, apart from our traditional
programs, we continued work around supporting the community under wartime
conditions and expanded to cover Ukrainians abroad e.g. during our annual
Wikimarathon campaign.

Our full report (in Ukrainian) is available here:

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Ukraine's annual report for 2022

2023-06-28 Thread Anton Protsiuk
Hi all,

I’m writing to let you know that Wikimedia Ukraine published and submitted
our annual reports for 2022.

Most of the past year was overshadowed by Russia’s all-out invasion of
Ukraine, which started in late February. Still, the Ukrainian wiki
community and Wikimedia Ukraine have continued active work to advance free
knowledge in our country.

We supported the community of volunteers during the war and told their
stories, helped organize two major international content campaigns
(international Wiki Loves Earth + Ukraine’s Cultural Diplomacy Month), held
two photo contests and over a dozen article campaigns on the Ukrainian
level, led major community events, cooperated with educators and the GLAM
community, worked to improve gender balance on Wikipedia, and much more.

Our full report (in Ukrainian) is available here:

[Wikimedia-l] Re: ChatGPT as a reliable source

2023-05-17 Thread Anton Protsiuk
Hi Kiril,

Thanks for raising an interesting topic.

On the first question – ChatGPT obviously shouldn't be used as a reliable
source; for various reasons, but primarily because it's a text generator
that tends to confidently present completely factually incorrect
information. Even the notion of "consulting ChatGPT" when writing an
article shouldn't be used. (Though I believe that it can be beneficial for
supplementary tasks when used with caution, such as helping proofread text
& spot spelling mistakes).

On the second question – there's a lot of active discussion on this topic
on English Wikipedia. I mostly haven't followed it, but can point you to
this draft policy (and, of course, its talk page):

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Ukraine's annual report for 2021

2022-12-14 Thread Anton Protsiuk
Hi all,

I'm writing to highlight that Wikimedia Ukraine's annual activity report
for 2021 has been publicly available on Meta [1].

In 2021, we continued to execute our multi-year strategy [2], which
includes five directions – enriching content of Wikipedia and its sister
projects, increasing participation in the Wikimedia projects, supporting
and helping develop the existing community, increasing public awareness
about Wikimedia, and advocating for policy changes needed to advance free
knowledge (notably freedom of panorama in Ukraine).

Some of the highlights in 2021 include supporting the Wiki Loves Earth
photo competition on the international scale; holding a big Wiki Loves
Monuments in Ukraine contest; organizing multiple campaigns to bridge
gender gap on Ukrainian-language Wikipedia and Wikiquote; publishing a
handbook on Wikipedia for teachers as part of our Wikipedia in Education
program; holding a hybrid all-Ukrainian Wikiconference; working with news
media publishers & supporting multiple social media channels to spread
awareness of Wikipedia and WMUA's projects.

If you are interested in reading about some of the case studies in greater
detail, we published articles on Diff about our experience organizing the
WikiGap 2021 campaign in Ukraine [3], as well as providing scholarships for
online conferences [4].

All of that happened before the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine,
which started in February of 2022. Despite Russia continuing to wage its
war against Ukraine, Wikimedia Ukraine has kept operating in 2022 – both
assisting community members in need and supporting previously planned
projects like Wiki Loves Earth internationally, Wiki Loves Monuments in
Ukraine, and much more.

We will share a detailed report on our 2022 activity in early 2023, but in
the meantime you can review slides from our presentations on the Ukrainian
community during the war [5] and Wikimedia Ukraine's approach to planning
our future activities [6], as well as read some of the personal stories of
volunteers affected by Russia's invasion [7].

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Wikimania program is now live

2022-08-07 Thread Anton Protsiuk
Hi,

The quality of proposals has been high, but there has been a deliberate
decision to try and keep the formal program manageable for participants.

>From the Wikimania wiki (more here: https://w.wiki/5YcU):

*>We learned from last year that the number of tracks resulted in sessions
where there were very few people participating or watching them, which can
cause frustration to presenters. We also learned that people needed more
breaks. We had to work those in, which removed time from the program. This
year we are experimenting with a hybrid format, with some sessions taking
place in-person in different parts of the world. We wanted to give rooms
for these experiments, even if they don’t necessarily compete with the
online program.*

That said, the number of sessions accepted is actually not very different
from last year's. Besides, folks are invited to contribute to the
on-demand – program
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikimania_2022_on_demand_program –
and schedule their own meetups outside of the formal program.
There'll be attendee & speaker practice sessions starting today where you
can learn more: https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/Platform_Practice

[Wikimedia-l] Re: [Wikimedia Announcements] Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month: We are back in 2022!

2022-02-24 Thread Anton Protsiuk
Hi. We at Wikimedia Ukraine are preparing a longer response to the concerns
raised here, but in brief:
* The challenge overall and the CentralNotice campaign in particular were
planned long before, as a general effort to enrich Wikipedia on
Ukraine-related topics, not as a specific political statement. Its first
edition was held last year within similar dates and advertised similarly.
Its idea first emerged back in 2018, and we've been actively working to
organize it since 2020.
* The challenge is supported by the Ukrainian government, but it has no
influence on the content of articles, and neither does Wikimedia Ukraine.
All participants have to follow relevant Wikipedia rules. Organizers only
provide suggested topics for the challenge and prizes for most active
participants (dependent on the level of activity, not the content of
articles they created), as well as contribute to promotion efforts.
Hopefully, we'll be able to ship physical prizes despite the Russian
aggression; otherwise, we'll find other ways to award winners.
* On a personal note – advancing free knowledge by creating and expanding
Wikipedia articles is a powerful tool to fight authoritarianism and
unfreedom. Regardless of whether you want to support Ukraine (as I think
the world should do), developing free knowledge in all ways compatible with
Wikipedia principles and rules is the goal we're all united around.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Join “CEE Spring” on Wikipedia to help discover Ukraine to the world

2021-05-07 Thread Anton Protsiuk
Thanks for your work, Yaroslav!

Although this challenge is obviously not focused on the specific problem
you mentioned, we do pay attention to improving articles in general. For
example, as noted in the announcement, we have prepared the list of most
important stubs for each CEE language edition:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_CEE_Spring_2021/Structure/Ukraine/Stubs

The contest in general is also not focused only on creating new articles,
though specifics might depend on each language edition. For example, in the
Ukrainian-language edition of the contest, which ran throughout April, we
were trying to incentivize improvement of existing articles in various
ways; we'll try to share lessons learned with the international community
once the results are ready.

[Wikimedia-l] Join “CEE Spring” on Wikipedia to help discover Ukraine to the world

2021-05-07 Thread Anton Protsiuk
Hi everyone!

By the end of May, we at Wikimedia Ukraine invite everyone to join CEE
Spring (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_CEE_Spring_2021) to help
discover Ukraine to the world.

The contest is devoted to improving Wikipedia content about Central and
Eastern Europe across multiple languages; the Central & Eastern European
community of Wikimedians has organized it every year since 2015.

Of course, you can write about many different CEE countries and regions
within the contest, but we at Wikimedia Ukraine are planning to send
special souvenirs for most active contributors to articles about Ukraine
specifically ;)

For the first time, we prepared the top-10 most important articles about
Ukraine that are missing (red links) for each CEE Wikipedia (
https://meta.wikimedia.org/?curid=11313069) and the top-10 important
articles that are too short for each CEE Wikipedia (
https://meta.wikimedia.org/?curid=11313068).

And we also have the general top-100 list with important topics missing in
many Wikipedias: https://meta.wikimedia.org/?curid=10583331

You can read the full announcement (and share it to help us spread the
world) here:

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Movement Strategy: The recommendations are now online

2020-05-12 Thread Anton Protsiuk
Impressive work, thanks to all those involved.

Were there any major changes to the content of recommendations as compared
to the previous iteration? That is, apart from clarifying & condensing the
text.

Best Regards

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Ukraine's Highlights of 2019

2019-12-29 Thread Anton Protsiuk
Hi all, and happy holidays to everyone who celebrates them now.

We at Wikimedia Ukraine are wrapping up the year, and we decided to look
back at our biggest highlights and achievements in 2019.

In 2019, we celebrated our 10th anniversary, developed a long-term strategy
— and continued to develop all our landmark projects and programs, such as
Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wikipedia Education Program, fight
for the freedom of panorama in Ukraine, and much more.

Check a detailed article on our blog —

[Wikimedia-l] She Did It — Writing Challenge Devoted to Ukrainian Women

2019-10-05 Thread Anton Protsiuk
Hi all,

Wikimedia Ukraine is organizing an international Wikipedia writing
challenge aimed to improve worldwide coverage of Ukrainian women —
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/She_Did_It.

The marathon has already started and will run for a week — by the end of
October 11th.

Please help counter the gender content gap on Wikipedia and showcase the
achievements of Ukrainian women. You can create and expand articles in any
language (other than Ukrainian as there's a separate marathon for Ukrainian
Wikipedia).

The rules and the scoring system are inspired by WikiGap Challenge, so they
might be familiar to some of you :) Prizes are premium Grammarly
subscriptions for most active contributors (and, of course, our warm love
and deep gratitude for everyone who participates).

Please join the challenge and, of course, help spread the word about it.

Thanks!

Best Regards
Anton Protsiuk
