[Wikimedia-l] Re: Post-Wikimania Covid cases

2023-09-08 Thread Robert Myers
It would be hard to know where you picked it up from. Certainly the longer you?re in a venue, the chances increase but you can still pick it up in locations you may have only spent a few minutes in. There was an uptick in cases world wide around the time of Wikimania. I was unable to attend due to work commitments, since my place of employment had people off due to COVID. Wikimania didn?t have any requirements, it recommend ART/RAT, face masks and to stay away from the conference if unwell https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2023:Health. PCR tests are now impossible to get, even if you can, they are now expensive. Though I found ART/RAT to be relatively reliable but just not as sensitive (T line would be faint for the first two days of symptoms), when I got CO
VID for the first time in March/April this year. I do not agree with enforcing testing, face masks and COVID vaccinations, when countries have moved away from such restrictions. --Robert Myersrobert.my...@wikimedia.org.auOn 9 Sep 2023, at 2:01 am, Lane Rasberry wrote:?I got COVID at Wikimania as did my boyfriend Fabian. Honestly, I need to disclaim the following by saying I?m not sure what measures were taken; however, I think one of those measures actually was taken: I think Wikimania was a hybrid event. Requirements for both testing and
masks might?ve helped; the more accurate COVID tests take a couple days to process, the rapid tests are less accurate, hence the need for both. Also, outdoor eating areas, along with purified and ventilated air indoors would also helped. Requirements for vaccination would make sense in a world where vaccinations were more accessible. An entirely virtual option would be ideal in the COVID situation we?re in (that is, a worldwide spike) would be the most ideal, but that?s impossible to predict. From,I dream of horsesShe/her

Hi all,

I've heard from a couple of Wikimania attendees that they got ill with Covid after Wikimania Singapore.

Just wondering ? are those exceptional cases, or did this happen to a substantial number of participants?

Best,
Andreas

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Sexual harassment

2020-08-23 Thread Robert Myers
And there the problem lies, going to local authorities (police) isn’t going to
be useful. Some authorities require the alleged crime to be committed in their
jurisdiction, which can be limited, anonymous nature of the person who
committed the alleged crime makes it difficult to identify the individual(s),
with it servers hosted outside the jurisdiction make it harder to investigate.
Also I have seen in the past, WP:LEGAL used against those who have reported
threats of physical violence or harassment (physical stalking) to law
enforcement.

I do think there needs to be a off-wiki complaint process for serious
allegations, since on-wiki processes can be inappropriate and acts as a
chilling effect (since it is very open and public) on the victim(s). The same
situation can occur for alleged perpetrator(s), where the allegation(s) are
false or vexatious and malicious grievances.

Maybe the Universal Code of Conduct might address this issue, it might not as
well.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Elena Sanz passed away last night

2020-07-06 Thread Robert Myers
I’m in shock! Have meet her at the Wikimedia Conference in Berlin and at
Wikimania. She was a fantastic person but also very passionate.

The community has lost a great role model. My condolences to her family,
colleagues and friends.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Preventing conflicts of interest in Wikimedia organizations' employment and financial relationships

2020-05-23 Thread Robert Myers
Most countries would have privacy laws that prevent organisations (with
exceptions for law and tax enforcement organisations) attaining and/or having
access to an employee/board member’s bank account.

Would be pointless anyway, since kickbacks don’t have to be paid into a bank
account[https://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-04-16/nsw-premier-barry-ofarrell-to-resign-over-icac-grange-wine/5393478].

WMAU has an internal COI register for all committee (board) members. Any time a
COI arises, it needs to be disclosed. During meetings, depending on the COI the
person(s) need abstain from voting or leave the meeting.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Commons

2020-05-18 Thread Robert Myers
Well some people do, but it is when they get trolled by other contributors
and/or overzealous Admin comes along and deletes the file. They quickly
lose interest, in turn telling other people not to bother.

I just had another lot of photographs tagged by a troll, in which an Admin
deletes (
https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log=File:Rachel_Priest_after_the_Sydney_Thunder_vs_Adelaide_Strikers_WBBL_game_at_Robertson_Oval.jpg
https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log=File:Abandoned_farm_house_in_Hillgrove_01.jpg).
These have been on Commons for two + years, using the same camera gear I
have used over the years. If it is enough for me to give up on the project,
it would be the same for any other user but for a newbie it is something
that would make me run for the hills (depart quickly as possible)!
