[Wikimedia-l] Wikipedia 20: The celebration continues and Rapid Grants are still available to support your events!

2021-02-10 Thread Samir Elsharbaty
Hi everyone!

This January we started our celebration of Wikipedia’s 20th birthday.[1]
Many people joined us for a global virtual event[2] and thousands others
joined many other events in every part of the world. [3]

THE CELEBRATION CONTINUES!

Many other events are still being planned throughout 2021. You can check
out the events and follow their updates on meta[3] or plan an event in your
community[4] if there isn’t one. If you are considering holding an event,
we wanted to let you know that Rapid Grants are still available to support
your planned events. For events happening in March, please make sure to
submit your grant application by 15 February and for events happening until
the end of July 2021, please make sure to submit your application no later
than 15 June 2021.

Applications for Rapid Grants are open from the 1st to the 15th of each
month and decisions are typically made by the end of that month. Rapid
Grants can fund common events in the movement such as edit-a-thons and
workshops in addition to small-scale experiments that don't need extensive
review to get started with a budget ranging between 500 to 2,000 USD.

You can find more information on Rapid Grants for Wikipedia 20 and the
application form on Meta.[5]

Please let us know if you have any questions.

[Wikimedia-l] Reminder to finalize your Rapid Grant application for Wikipedia 20 by 15 December 2020

2020-12-09 Thread Samir Elsharbaty
Hi everyone!

The December round of Rapid Grants will close on 15 December. If you are
planning to submit a grant application for a Wikipedia 20 event taking
place on or around January 15, please make sure to do so by midnight UTC on
15 December 2020. For those planning to host Wikipedia 20 events after
January through the end of 2021, Rapid Grants will continue to be available
in the following months.

Please note that applications for Rapid Grants to fund events happening in
January will not be eligible for funding after 15 December due to the lack
of time available for processing those applications.

You can find more information on Rapid Grants for Wikipedia 20 and the
application form on meta. [1]

Thank you so much and looking forward to celebrating with you!

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Rapid Grants for Wikipedia 20 celebration events

2020-11-10 Thread Samir Elsharbaty
Hi everyone,

The Rapid Grants for Wikipedia 20 are still accepted through 15 November.
If you're planning a Rapid Grant for a Wikipedia 20 event that will be held
in January, we highly recommend finalizing and submitting your grant
application by 15 November. Rapid Grants will continue to be available
later for those who couldn't apply during the November cycle or are
planning to hold their events later in the year 2021. More information is
available here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_20/Grants

[Wikimedia-l] Rapid Grants for Wikipedia 20 celebration events

2020-10-15 Thread Samir Elsharbaty
Hi everyone,

(Apologies for cross-posting.)

Last month, we shared a survey to inform the planning and funding processes
of Wikipedia 20 anniversary celebrations. The survey results have
demonstrated interest in hosting virtual and in-person events around the
world to celebrate Wikipedia’s 20th birthday.

We are excited to announce that the Wikimedia Foundation will be supporting
individuals and groups planning to hold Wikipedia 20 celebration events
through the Rapid Grants program.

The Rapid Grants program can support event plans with a budget ranging from
500 USD, up to 2,000 USD. All the details, the eligibility criteria, and
the application form are available on the Wikipedia 20 grants meta page. [1]

Applications for Rapid Grants are accepted between the 1st and 15th of each
month, and a decision on the application is, typically, ready by the end of
that month. For applicants who would like to host Wikipedia celebration
events during the month of January 2021, we highly recommend applying as
soon as possible (i.e. during the November 2020 cycle). For later events
through the end of 2021, applications will continue to be open later in the
year.

*Other funding opportunities*

If your plans for the Wikipedia 20 celebration event don’t meet some of the
eligibility criteria for a Rapid Grant (e.g. your budget is expected to
exceed $2000), you may want to consider reducing the scale of your
activities, or to explore other grant opportunities that may better support
your plan:

   -

Additional funding for Conference & Event grantees (e.g. for a regional
or thematic conference) who wish to incorporate a celebration event to an
   existing conference. [2]
   -

Conference & Event Grants to support celebration events for more than
   2000 USD. [2]

*Round one applications for Conference & Event grants is now closed.
Details for round two (for events that will be held between July and
December 2021) will be announced on the conference and event grants page.

For more information on Wikipedia 20, please visit the Wikipedia 20 grants
meta page. [1]

Thank you and please share the message with your communities!

[Wikimedia-l] [Wikipedia 20] Rapid Grant survey

2020-09-16 Thread Samir Elsharbaty
Hi everyone,

(Apologies for cross-posting.)

As part of the upcoming celebrations surrounding Wikipedia's 20th
birthday[1], the Wikimedia Foundation is publishing a short optional
survey[2] that will help us understand the needs of people who would like
to host a birthday event. The survey is expected to take three to five
minutes to fill in and will remain open until 23:59 UTC on Wednesday, 30
September 2020.

Before taking the survey, please review the privacy statement policy[3].

We would also like to announce that the Foundation will be supporting
Wikipedia 20 anniversary celebration events through multiple grant programs:

* Rapid Grants[4] to support celebration events up to 2000 USD.

* Additional funding for Conference & Events grantees (e.g. for a regional
or thematic conference) who wish to incorporate a celebration event to an
existing conference.

* Conference & Event Grants[5] to support celebration events for more than
2000 USD.*

*Round one applications for conference & event grants [5] is now open until
28 September 2020.

[Wikimedia-l] Brand Project: Preparing for feedback on naming convention proposals

2020-05-01 Thread Samir Elsharbaty
Hello everyone,

The 2030 Movement Brand Project is now moving into Phase 2: naming
convention proposals [1]. This is the most anticipated phase of this
project. It will ask the movement to evaluate which proposal(s) best
communicate who we are so that billions of new users can understand us and
join us. We look forward to getting everyone’s feedback on the different
ideas being developed.

The feedback period will go from 7-21 May, and will begin with a
presentation of multiple naming convention proposals on 7 May at 17:00
UTC[2]. For information on the presentation, the proposals, and how the
feedback process will work, see the update on the project page on Meta [3].

Best,

Samir & the Brand Project team

[Wikimedia-l] Summary of the Brand Project presentation

2020-04-17 Thread Samir Elsharbaty
Hi everyone,

Yesterday, the 2030 Brand Movement Project presented the unified concept
that will guide the upcoming branding proposals. Thanks to the 224
attendees who watched the presentation live! Participants brought a great
stream of comments and questions (averaging 8 per minute!) that helped
clarify important points.

The unified concept, “interconnection”, was arrived at after many community
workshops, exercises, and conversations. “Interconnection” distills the 23
distinct concepts generated in workshops into a single word that links
together the insights and definitions from the participants, and at the
same time adds more meaning to the answer to the question who are we? This
concept will not be a public or visible part of branding, but rather a
guiding idea.

Take a look at the video explaining interconnection as a unified concept
[1].

You can watch the full presentation video, together with the lively
discussion that accompanied it [2]. Most of the questions were answered
during the presentation (including questions about the project scope, the
upcoming naming convention proposals, and the RfC), but there wasn't enough
time to answer them all. Questions are being compiled on the Brand Network
talk page on Meta [3].

The team will be hosting a follow-up office hour next week to answer the
rest of the questions. Participation details will be shared on the Brand
Network talk page. The session will be recorded and shared, and answers
will be covered on the project pages. If you have a different question
you’d like to ask, feel free to add it to the page or bring it to the
office hour.

PS: As soon as these videos are ready for Commons we will upload them
there, and we will notify about this on the Brand Network talk page as well.

Thanks,

Samir & the Brand Project team

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Brand Project: Who are we as a movement?

2020-04-11 Thread Samir Elsharbaty
Hi, the Brand team has been watching the RfC and has written a summary
about it [1] that was shared both in the RfC [2] and the project page [3]
in Meta. The team has integrated the feedback of the RfC in the development
process, just as we did with the activities organized by the project
itself.

The RfC is covered in the main project page as well as in the FAQ [4]. The
RfC has been a recurrent topic of discussion in the Brand project talk page
[5], where we are answering questions and discussing topics whenever they
are posted. We recommend you to have a look at these updates before making
further conclusions here.

The RfC is about the use of the word “Wikipedia” in the name of the
Foundation, and by extension the names of affiliates were discussed as
well. The project team has clarified that many options for a naming
convention are being explored. While having Wikipedia as a central concept
is a project requirement, It is very unlikely that any naming convention
proposal will be based on a simple substitution of the word "Wikimedia"
with the word "Wikipedia". Brand systems offer many more possibilities.

Another important point to clarify is that the proposals for naming
conventions haven’t been defined yet. According to the project timeline
[6], several proposals for a naming convention will be shared with the
communities for feedback in May, at the earliest. At the end of this
review, one proposal will be selected and refined. You can check the
timeline to learn about further phases with public reviews before the full
proposal for a brand system is presented to the Wikimedia Foundation
leadership and the Board.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Brand Project: Who are we as a movement?

2020-04-09 Thread Samir Elsharbaty
Hi All,

We wanted to follow up with a brief update on the project timeline and
share an invitation to join an event this month.

We know there continues to be so much uncertainty in the world, so we are
slowing down the process of the project. Big changes are happening to all
of us these days. We want to make sure that we respect the time and
priorities of the project collaborators. This means updating the project
timeline approach to have more flexibility for participants and smaller
time commitments [1], revising the project schedule month by month and
keeping the Brand Network [2] and other participants informed on a more
regular basis with any updates and changes. The naming discussions planned
for April are now pushed to May, at the earliest. Design proposals are
likewise shifted +4 weeks.

But we do have things to share:

*This month: live brand concept presentation!*

To honor, celebrate, and conclude the work around the concepts referred to
in Essie’s email above [3], Snohetta and the Brand Project team will
present the Unified Concept LIVE on 16 April, 15:00 - 16:00 GMT. Snøhetta
will explain how they used the ideas, feedback and conceptual models from
the workshops and online exercises to arrive at a final, unified concept.
This unified concept will be the foundation for the upcoming work around
the naming conventions, visual decisions, and the overall design system.
The session will also be recorded and made available for viewing after. You
can join us using these links. [4] Note: this is not a presentation of a
proposal for a naming convention or design.

Thank you!

Samir and the brand project team

Hi everyone,

The Brand Project Team felt it was important to address the concerns and
questions around Snøhetta and the English Wikipedia, and have now added an
FAQ about it. [1] Please refer there for the full details about the block
and what is being done. The project team is in the process of updating the

2020-03-23 Thread Samir Elsharbaty
Hello,

The pause we announced was to the community activity on the movement brand
project.[1] With the global pandemic, we thought that it should be
everyone’s priority to take care of themselves and their families right
now. In the meantime, our project team will be working with Snohetta to
review the project materials and make any necessary adjustments to the
timeline.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Free Bassel

2015-11-23 Thread Samir Elsharbaty
Some suggestions of things we can do:

1. The list of signatories on the amnesty international website does not
include the WMF, the Wikimedia community, any of our affiliations or any
representation from the Wikimedia movement. I wonder if we can contact them
and request adding any of the above mentioned?

2. Use our SM channels to retweet the WMF blog post [1] about him with the
news that he is sentenced to death.

3. We all try to share supporting tweets on the #FreeBassel hashtag.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Education] Of Education-coop cabal: what's it, who's it, how one joins it, why is it like that?

2015-06-09 Thread Samir Elsharbaty
Hi Bohdan,

Thank you for your interest in Wikipedia Education Program
<https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education> and the Wikipedia Education
Collaborative
<https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/Wikipedia_Education_Collaborative>.
The Education Collaborative is a group of experienced program leaders who
have been running successful education programs for a long period of time.
The group aims at helping other program leaders, educators and other
program volunteers achieve their goals easier by providing the needed
advice and model programs.

The Education Collaborative list is an internal mailing list for the member
discussions. It is closed for the members. However, the Collaborative is a
transparent initiative. The activities of the Collab is publicly reported
on the WMF blog
<http://blog.wikimedia.org/2014/11/25/education-collaborative-members-meet-edinburgh/>
and the Education Newsletter [1
<https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/Newsletter/March_2014/Education_Cooperative_Kickoff_Meeting_in_Prague>],
[2
<https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/Newsletter/November_2014/Wikipedia_Education_Collaborative_members_meet_in_Edinburgh>
].

Please feel free to reach out to the Collab members listed here
<https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/Wikipedia_Education_Collaborative#Current_members>
with any questions you may have about WEP or if you need help with
coordinating any WEP-related events. I am sure they will be happy to help.

As Vojtech has mentioned, please more read about the membership criteria
here
<https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/Wikipedia_Education_Collaborative#Membership>.
Generally, any active program leader can request membership of the
Education Collaborative. However, they will need to meet the membership
criteria e.g. the Collab need for new members, the current
members/coordinators approval, etc.

I hope that answers your questions. Please don't hesitate to contact me
with any further questions you may have.

Regards,

Samir

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikipedia Education Program is now on Facebook!

2015-03-02 Thread Samir Elsharbaty
Hello everyone,

We are happy to announce a new channel of discussion and collaborative
work. Wikipedia Education Program Facebook group
<https://www.facebook.com/groups/WikipediaEducationProgram/>.[1] Please
join us in the group and add your facebook friends who are
involved/interested in Wikipedia in Education.

Here's part of the education newsletter post announcing it:

Since the beginning of the program, volunteers around the world were in
contact with each other and with the education team
<https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/About/Staff> at the
Wikimedia Foundation using several ways including the Wikimedia Education
mailing list <https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/education>,
regular meetings in which program leaders worked together such as Wikipedia
Education Collaborative
<https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/Wikipedia_Education_Collaborative>
meetings,
and social media website accounts for local and regional programs like Arab
World Education Program <https://www.facebook.com/arwep>, Czech Republic
Education <https://www.facebook.com/studenti.pisi.wikipedii?fref=ts>
program accounts
on different social media websites, Armenian WikiCamps
<https://www.facebook.com/groups/wiki.camp>, Wiki Education Foundation
<https://www.facebook.com/WikiEducationFoundation> and other similar
examples, While the global education program stayed away from social media
websites for a while.

There was a growing need for an easier method for program leaders,
professors, students, staff and everyone to discuss their ideas, chat,
brainstorm and work virtually on their new projects. Social media websites
are believed to be quicker, easier way, and reachable from mobile and
tablet devices than other talkpages and mailing lists. The new Facebook
group will not replace the existing mailing list and other contact options.
It will work alongside with them trying to reach out to everyone who is
involved or interested in Wikipedia in Education.

Join us in the new Facebook group
<https://www.facebook.com/groups/WikipediaEducationProgram/> and meet the
people who brought success to Wikipedia in Education around the world.
Discuss, work together and seek help from elder users and the WMF education
team.

Meet you there!

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Education Extension

2015-02-18 Thread Samir Elsharbaty
Hi Andrea,

Do you use the education extension to import usernames to WikiMetrics? And
what seems to be the issue with WikiMetrics results?

Would you please have a look at these learning patterns on using Wikimetris:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikimetrics_learning_patterns

And this one on using the education extension:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Learning_patterns/Using_the_education_extension

They may have the answers to your questions. If your problem persists,
please let me know.

I hope that helps!

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Education Extension

2015-02-03 Thread Samir Elsharbaty
Hello everyone,

As a user of the Education extension, for both Wikipedia Education Program
work and non-WEP work, I would recommend using it for other different
purposes. I know many people, including me, who used it to track editathon
activity, working groups and many other projects. It seems that the
extension already covers most of what was suggested here:

>- A teacher or wiki-mentor could make a shared watchlist of their

If this is the case why shall we have a new extension with the same
features?

Please have a look at this page which covers the features and use of the Ed
extension:
https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/Extension

Also this learning pattern would help understanding how it works:

Please let me know if you have any questions,

Thank you!
