[Wikimedia-l] Celebrating Bangla Culture: The Backstory and Highlights from 'Wiki Loves Bangla' Photo Competition

2024-03-23 Thread Shabab Mustafa
TL;DR: 'Wiki Loves Bangla' is a new yearly photo competition organized by
Bangla WikiMoitree (a wikimedia thematic network and aspiring hub) aimed to
reduce the content gap regarding Bangla Culture and Heritage. Competition
result links are at bottom of this email.

---

People of Bengali ethnicity live all around the world, but the majority of
the population live in Bangladesh and India. Bengali Wikimedians from all
over the world have been enriching the Wikimedia projects in the Bangla
language hand-in-hand for the past two decades.

In 2022, the longest-running Wikimedia project Bangla Wikipedia turned 18.
To celebrate the 18 years of sustained collaboration between Bangla
Wikimedians, the Wikimedia Bangladesh Chapter
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Bangladesh> and West Bengal
Wikimedians User Group
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/West_Bengal_Wikimedians> of India had
decided to designate this long relationship as a formal collaboration
network and named it "Bangla WikiMoitree
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Bangla_WikiMoitree/en>." Later "Bangla
WikiMoitree" was categorised as a Wikimedia thematic network and aspiring
hub for Bengali culture and language.

Despite Bangla being the 5th most spoken language and Bengalis being the
third-largest ethnic group (est. population of 300 mil in 2023), we have a
significant content gap about Bangla Culture and Heritage in Wikimedia
projects.

In the 3rd in-person meeting of "Bangla WikiMoitree" (held in Singapore
during Wikimania 2023) we agreed that more organised and long-term work is
needed to reduce this content gap. So we started planning to design a
program, named "Bangla Culture and Heritage Collation Program" (in Bangla,
"বাংলা সংস্কৃতি ও ঐতিহ্য সংরক্ষণ কর্মসূচি").

In January 2024, we launched the 1st flagship project under this program, "Wiki
Loves Bangla
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Bangla_2024/en>" (
in Bangla, "বাংলার প্রেমে উইকি").

Wiki Loves Bangla is an annual international photography competition around
Bangla culture and heritage. This competition will be held yearly on a
different theme each year. The subject of the first edition was Bengali Food
and Cuisine, which aimed to highlight the diversity of Bengali cuisine by
improving the quality and quantity of images of Bengali food available
around the world.

In this edition, the contest attracted significant participation with over
2,100 images of Bengali food and culture from 212 participants, reflecting
the enthusiastic engagement with the initiative. We believe this
competition has substantially enriched Wikimedia Commons with a wealth of
Bengali food photos, which will greatly enhance the illustration of
Wikipedia articles in the future.

You can check the top 10 winning photos on commons: https://w.wiki/9XAb or
on the official website: https://wikilovesbangla.org/galleries/ .

ধন্যবাদ। (Thank You.)

On behalf of Bangla WikiMoitree-

OT continued -

ChatGPT poses bigger threat to search engines, like Google or Human
generated knowledge platform like Stackoverflow, Quora than Wikipedia at
this moment of time. According to CNBC news article, Google already taking
a conservative stance towards this. [1]

I my personal opinion, ChatGPT might not be replacing WP very newer future.
There is a chance that the startup behind ChatGPT will get burried under
lawsuits from big fishes in the pond if they feel any existential threat.
For example, Stackoverflow already banned (temporarily) ChatGPT. [2]

[Wikimedia-l] Bengali Wikipedia is now 100K+ articles strong

2020-12-26 Thread Shabab Mustafa
Dear Friends,

The year 2020 is full of woes and wonders. Just before the ending of 2020,
Bengali Wikipedia[1][2] has passed a significant milestone of passing 100K
articles.

Bengali, an Indo-Aryan language and lingua-franca of the Bengal region of
South Asia, is the fifth most-spoken native language and the seventh
most-spoken language by the total number of speakers in the world.[3] The
Bengali Wikipedia Project launched on 27 January 2004 with very few
editors. On 25 December 2020, after 16 years of the initial launch, it now
has passed the milestone of 100k+ articles.[4]

As most of the contributors of Bengali Wikipedia are young and this year's
long lockdowns and campus shutdowns of educational institutes, Wikipedians
had managed to utilized their extra free times by contributing to the
Bengali Wikipedia and it has enjoyed growth at an almost double rate than
the previous year with an organized approach of topic-based consecutive
edit-a-thons.

Here is a quick overview of the milestones achieved -

27 January 2004: Launch of Bengali Wikipedia
September 2006: 10K articles
28 June 2009: 20K articles
13 May 2014: 30K articles
04 January 2016: 40K articles
30 April 2017: 50K articles
08 August 2018: 60K articles
16 July 2019: 70K articles
23 January 2020: 80K articles
22 June 2020: 90K articles
25 December 2020: 100K articles

I welcome you to congratulate the Bengali Wikipedia community for their
achievement and wishing them all the best for future progress and
prosperity.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Board Update on Branding

2020-06-23 Thread Shabab Mustafa
Thank you, Nataliia, for stepping forward and clearing out some of the
confusion. That helps.

But not all the confusion gets cleared for me regarding the survey process.
For example, X marks Option 1 as 'Disagree' and Option 2 as 'Strongly
Disagree'. The score points for 'Disagree' is -1 and 'Strongly Disagree' is
-2. Will the report say, 'X prefers Option 1 over Option 2', just because
mathematically -1 is greater than -2?

Please pardon my lack of understanding of reporting formats, as I could not
find the information on how the result of this survey will be interpreted
and presented to the board.

BR,
Shabab

[Wikimedia-l] Cautionary steps from Wikimedia Bangladesh in response to COVID-19 pandemic

2020-03-15 Thread Shabab Mustafa
Wikimedia Bangladesh has been closely observing the developments and
impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide including Bangladesh. In
response of recent outbreak reported in Bangladesh, the Executive Committee
of Wikimedia Bangladesh held an emergency online meeting and come upon to
the following decisions:

To prevent the possible spread of coronavirus and to ensure the health and
safety of the members of the Wikimedia community, all offline activities
(meetups, workshops, seminars) and in-person public events related to
Wikimedia Bangladesh and its sub-regional communities have been suspended
until further notice, effective from March 14, 2020.

Simultaneously, the Bangla Wikipedia Annual Conference which was scheduled
next April has been canceled. The Annual General Meeting of Wikimedia
Bangladesh and the award ceremony of WLE 2019 and WLM 2019 has been
postponed until further announcement.

Wikimedia Bangladesh urges to all Wikipedia and Wikimedia project
contributors to follow the public health advice to ensure their health and
safety.

What kind of visitor tracking are we using in this site? And if someone is

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Anti-viruses [was Re: Information on "Multiple failed attempts to log in" emails]

2018-05-07 Thread Shabab Mustafa
I have been a Linux advocate for almost a decade now and from 'my past
experience', I can tell you have opened a topic of a huge discussion about
people should switch to Linux Desktops (which is off-topic here). But I
respectfully disagree with your statement, "anti-virus programs usually do
more harm than good".

From a conservative viewpoint, some protection is still better to have than
no protection at all. And the example you gave here, an anti-virus
mistakenly classified your domain as a potential threat, makes a weaker
point. By a few mistakes, we cannot cancel out a million of other
successes. A false alarm is yet favourable than no alarm at all.

Personally, I am a big believer of a John Wooden quote, "Failure isn't
fatal, but failure to change might be". So, all the best to the Wikimedians
of Hong Kong. Thank you very much for all the good works that you have done
in past. I am sure that you will stack all the odds in your favors and come
back with something better.

Best wishes.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Winning photos of Wiki Loves Monuments Bangladesh 2016

2016-11-08 Thread Shabab Mustafa
I just want to add a little supplementary information, with this big
response from the people, at a point we had many pictures of Govt. listed
archeological sites but we didn't have articles on them for each and every
of them. So, we started a edit-a-thon to keep up with the flow. That
edit-a-thon was also successful.

We hope we will get more beautiful pictures next year.

  Hello,

  Ali is being modest.

Not only is Wikimedia Bangladesh among only the 5% who got NGO
registration, but they are also among the 1% to do it without paying
 anyone
a bribe. I have heard that they were asked for money many times to make
things go more quickly. Perhaps people outside the region do not know,
 but
there are a lot of desks that all want to stamp the registration papers
before giving the final approval. For a foreign-affiliated Internet
technology organization mostly run by younger people who have a
relationship to a major Internet property to be able to get a
 registration
without paying any bribe is probably unprecedented in the history of
 South
Asia. Getting a registration is something to be proud of, but getting it
completely honestly means that a lot of extra work went into the
registration just to keep a good reputation.

I am thrilled with the good example this sets and not only is having the
registration a wonderful thing for the Wikimedia community, but also this
shows an excellent precedent for all Bangladeshi community activists
because they have a bright example in Wikimedia Bangladesh that paying a
bribe is not necessary to get an NGO registration. This is really
 something
to publicize, stress, and note as a point of pride. No one should forget
this as it really takes a lot of sacrifices to do this without bribing
 and
in terms of cost, it actually is cheaper to save time and pay the bribes.

I hope that this encourages other organizations in Bangladesh to also
 file
their own NGO paperwork and accomplish whatever they feel ought to be
 done.

  Congratulations a thousand times!

  yours,

  Hi,

  After four months

After 6 years without employees, and 4 months of the recruitment process
(collecting resumes and interviews) I happy to announce that last month
WMIL hired Executive Director to support the increase in WMIL's
 activities,
  projects, volunteers and professionalization..

  Meet Dorit Shafir Dyamant:

Over the last decade she mainly worked at NGO's in a variety of roles:
 from
marketing through projects management and producing conferences. She
 have
MA degree in nonprofit management from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem
and B.A in literature and comparative philosophy from University of
 Haifa.

As a student at the Hebrew University, she founded and produced for 6
 years
the project Words and poets' - an open evenings meetings for young
 poets.

She married to Itay, and mother to Marom and Shalev. And I quote her, I
love to read three books at the same time, I write primarily for myself
 all
my life, and I fervently supports positive thinking and action based
  sharing and cross-fertilization.

She will attend the ChapConf in Milan next week and I encourage her
colleagues (CEO/ED and any chapters representatives or WMF's staff) to
 meet
her, share tips and welcome her to our Wikimedia family!

Dorit email is do...@wikimedia.org.il and she already been subscribed to
  all the relevant mailing lists.

I will use this opportunity also to share our new website (we just
 launched
it today) - we still have lot of bugs to fix and text improvement, but as
most of you can't understand Hebrew, it will not really change a lot for
you :) (We will launch the English version in the next few weeks):
