An interesting idea. How is this done currently for the wp:de image of the
day? And which public repository would then used for all the scripts used?

Hi,

Emmanuel suggested a couple of weeks ago to have a swiss image of the day.

I like the idea a lot and i am wondering how to best put it into practice.

What would be the best way to do it?

I will not put any phone numbers under our PR.

Any verbal communications will be made by someone ready to speak. At least
I have learnt from my tutors here that unannounced phone interviews give
people the opportunity to goof.

For emails, you can contemplate what to say before you type so an email
address is all I will leave there.

For the Citi breakfast show, once confirmed whoever will speak will have

Now, I volunteer to speak on the show. If they can't speak to an overseas

Hi All

I have been working on something using the redirecting service that QRpedia
provides without using the actual QR code for the Natural History Museum in
London (final write up coming soon).

We get around 50% foreign language visitors and offer them very little
(apart from a newly released audio guide).

What I've made is basically a photographic representation of the museum
that links to the Wikipedia articles for the species, I've included a link
to the mobile site version as it looks nicer

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/NHMandSM/NHM_Galleries

I think this offers a few key things:

1. It offers people the chance to work together to curate a museum (or any
other space) in their own way with many different perspectives, e.g

* Butterfly identification guide for our butterfly
house

* Mammals
Gallerygives
Wikipedia articles for species in every display case

* Browse a book that's on display (The Birds of America) with links to each
species in your own
language

* Being able to augment displays already in the museum:

   * Add to the Giant Sequoia cross section we have that has names and
dates on it's
ringswithlinks
to those events and people

   * To link to Wikipedia articles from text on museum signs and to offer
people the change to do translations of that museum sign in their own
language.

* Tree identification guide (not finished yet)

2. It has very low technology barriers compared to something using an app,
it works on any browser on most devices, including odd things like
Blackberrys and microsoft tablets

3. You don't have to put QR codes everywhere, sometimes it's not possible.

4. Anyone can do it for their local museum, art gallery, nature reserve etc
at no cost and without permission.

I played around with quite a few things before coming up with this
including using Layar (image recognition) and google maps with geocoding,
both being hard work and clumsy and not working very well when things are
close together or 3d objects or the software doesn't allow collaboration.

I have no idea where this sort of thing should live, any ideas?

At QRpedia's heart it's a Wikipedia language redirect that happens to have
a QR code as the way of getting there, perhaps it just needs a different
name, Wikipedia language link?. I'd love to see QRpedia being used in a lot
of places, for instance I would love to see QRpedia being used on
OpenStreetMap links to Wikipedia and also for other projects like
Wikivoyage.

Cheers

John

[Wikimediach-l] Fwd: [cultural-partners] A million images released

Betreff: [cultural-partners] A million images released
An: "Wikimedia Chapters cultural partners coordination" <
cultural-partn...@wikimedia.ch>

Hi all,

An interesting challenge for us: the British Library has just released
a million (really - 1,019,993) high-quality scans of public domain
images onto Flickr Commons:

http://britishlibrary.typepad.co.uk/digital-scholarship/2013/12/a-million-first-steps.html
http://lukemckernan.com/2013/12/13/mechanical-curation/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/britishlibrary/ (images)
https://github.com/BL-Labs/imagedirectory (metadata)

The challenge is that they don't know what any of the pictures
actually are. They've been programatically extracted from a corpus of
digitised books, with no metadata beyond the details of the book
itself - which of course tells us very little about what any given
picture is.

As a result, they aren't much use for Commons - at least, not as a
bulk upload. (I looked into this a few months back). They're all PD,
though, so can be individually migrated across without any rights
issues.

The plan is to use Flickr to feed these into a crowdsourcing
application of some form, and hopefully that will give us enough
metadata to be able to start pulling them across into Commons.
However, if you have any smart ideas for how we could bring them into
Commons now, using the metadata we have...

Andrew.

what is not clearly stated on the wmuk site, and probably the most
important thing: the qr plaquettes have an url on them pointing to
http://qrwp.org, a domain which is registered to roger bamkin and his
family. the whole discussion was about the transfer of both dns
domains, qrpedia.org, and qrwp.org, to to somebody closer to the
wikipedia movement than a single person who might die and his heirs
have nothing in common with the movement - and change the qrwp domain
to point to whatever interesting thing they want later on, voiding
zillions of physical qr plaquettes.

Hi everyone,
i'm pleased to report to you that the Dutch Rijksmuseum (you know, the
one with all the Rembrandts and Vermeers) has decided to release all
of their PD images in high resolution on their website, Rijksstudio.

A year ago, the Rijksmuseum released a new website with a section that
allows people to reuse all the images in many different ways. For
commercial use, you still needed to contact the image department, even
though the works were PD. However, a week ago they removed this
restriction and now anyone can download the high resolution scans.

The API still serves the lower resolution scans, but i've been assured
that the higher resolution images *will* be available in the API in
the very near future. I guess they'll make an excellent candidate to
be uploaded to Commons with the GLAM Wiki Toolset project next year.

Until then, i invite you all to upload all the images you want by
hand, i've already done that with Rembrandt's Nightwatch which has
gone from 2 to a whopping 161 megapixels:

There's a (Dutch) blogpost available from Creative Commons

 Excellent work!

Last week I was invited to speak on a conference in Cologne [0] about the
"Cultural heritage and Wikipedia". On the eve of my presentation I read the
blogpost and was excited about the fantastic news from Sweden.

I have taken the chance to modify my presentation a bit and added 2 slides
[1]. The audience of the conference were impressed about the high
resolution TIFF files :-)

In my private blog I have written about the news from Sweden too [2]

Hi Rupert,

We'd be open to any jurisdiction that provides an appropriate legal
foundation for our operations, as well as meeting our technical and
topographic needs. However for this specific proposal, we're looking for a
US-centric location that can serve as a backup should our Ashburn location
fail, among other uses.

Thanks.

Apologies if this is out there already, but since the Smithsonian can't
advertise at the moment, I thought I should pass it on:

 *From:* "Tanner, Simon"
*Subject:* *Smithsonian X 3D Event in November*

Please share with your networks and friends as the Smithsonian cannot
advertise right now (due to the Shutdown):

Smithsonian X 3D
November 13-14, 2013
Smithsonian X 3D shows how 3D technologies will transform the work of the
Smithsonian Institution-and museum and research institutions worldwide.

For the first time ever, state-of-the-art 3D scanning and image-based
modeling technology paired with new Smithsonian tools will enable museum
collections, scientific specimens, and entire research sites to be
digitally recorded, studied, and shared in immersive detail.

Researchers and conservators can use 3D capture to document and analyze a
single artifact or an entire field site
Curators and educators can use 3D imagery to explore complex ideas and
share new discoveries
Teachers, collaborators, and members of the public can interact with
Smithsonian museum objects in new ways
We hope to grow the Smithsonian's 3D digitization efforts from pilot to
program, and unleash the full potential of 3D technology in the museum and
research community.

Heya,

We have written down our latest thinking regarding the pageview api
codename Hypercube. Two recent developments:
1) We will scope down the time window that can initially be queried to
somewhere in the range of 1 to 3 months.
2) We have some outlines for an api to query the data.

Please visit https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Analytics/Hypercube and

Hi all,
Some of you would have already heard about the recent partnership
between Malayalam Wikimedians & German University of Tubingen to digitize
the works of Herman Gundert.

Dr. Hermann Gundert was a German missionary, scholar, and linguist, as well
as the grandfather of German novelist and Nobel laureate Hermann Hesse.
Gundert compiled a Malayalam grammar book, Malayalabhaasha Vyakaranam
(1859), the Malayalam-English dictionary (1872), and contributed to work on
Bible translations into Malayalam. He worked primarily at Tellicherry on
the Malabar coast, in Kerala, India. Gundert also contributed to the fields
of history, geography and astronomy.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermann_Gundert

The corpus of nearly 80 manuscripts, 150 printed works and some palm leaf
manuscripts of the German scholar available with the university runs into
some 42,000 pages.

A detailed history of this effort can be read here

Betreff: [VereinDE-l] Ein Brief - Ein Anliegen: Freies Wissen fördern
An: "Mailingliste des Wikimedia Deutschland e. V. / mailing list of
Wikimedia Deutschland e. V."

Liebe Listenleser,

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Die_R%C3%B6mer_kommen!>.
vielleicht schon Anfang 2014 stattfinden.

Dear All,

I wonder if anyone can give me some advice.
I am currently researching companies that offer 2D digitisation services.
The project is to archive the photographs, manuscripts, books etc. for
Barcelona´s cultural institute, preferably on site.

Many thanks,
Katya

[Wikimediach-l] Fwd: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia and the politics of encryption

Betreff: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia and the politics of encryption
An: "Wikimedia Mailing List"

Hi folks,

As many of you know, this week we enabled HTTPS for logged-in users of
Wikimedia projects. See:

https://blog.wikimedia.org/2013/08/28/https-default-logged-in-users-wikimedia-sites/

We have geographically exempted users geo-located to China or Iran
from this [1], because these countries mostly block HTTPS traffic and
requiring HTTPS for logged-in users would make it impossible for users
in these countries to log in.

Long term, we’d like to increase HTTPS coverage further, initially by
marking the HTTPS versions of our pages as "canonical", which would
cause search engines to refer to them instead of the unencrypted
content. This would make issues with countries that block HTTPS
traffic even more complex to deal with.

HTTPS for editors is important because it is otherwise trivial to
sniff account credentials, especially when users use unencrypted
connections such as open wireless networks. This could potentially
enable an attacker to gain access to an account with significant
privileges, such as checkuser credentials. Beyond that, HTTPS makes it
harder for attackers (individuals, organizations, governments) to
monitor user behavior of readers and editors. It’s not perfect by any
means, but it’s a step towards more privacy and security.

There are many sites on the web now that use HTTPS for all
transactions. For example, Twitter and Facebook use HTTPS by default.
Both sites are also completely blocked in mainland China. [2]

Disabling HTTPS-by-default in regions where HTTPS is blocked for
political reasons of course also exposes affected users to monitoring
and credentials-theft -- which is likely part of the political
motivation for blocking it in the first place. Therefore, our current
exemption is an explicit choice to _not_ give users a degree of
security that we give to everyone else, for the simple reason that
their government would otherwise completely limit their access.

If they know how to make HTTPS work in their region, these users will
still be able to use it by explicitly visiting the HTTPS URLs or use
an extension such as HTTPSEverywhere to enforce HTTPS usage.

In the long term, the Wikimedia movement is faced with a choice, which
is inherently political: Should we indefinitely sustain security
exceptions for regions that prevent the use of encryption, or should
we shift to an alternative strategy? How do we answer that question?

We can, of course, ask users in the affected countries. Given that
this may lead to degradation or loss of access, users are likely to be
opposed, and indeed, when plans to expand HTTPS usage were announced,
a group of Chinese Wikipedians published an open letter asking for
exemptions to be implemented:

https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:%E5%BC%BA%E5%88%B6%E5%8A%A0%E5%AF%86%E7%99%BB%E5%BD%95/openletter

This was a big part of what drove the decision to implement exemptions.

The bigger consideration here, however, is whether any such
accommodation achieves positive or negative long term effects. The
argument against it goes like this: If we accommodate the PRC’s or
Iran’s censorship practices, we are complicit in their attempts to
monitor and control their citizenry. If a privileged user’s
credentials (e.g. Checkuser) are misused by the government through
monitoring of unencrypted traffic, for example, this is an action that
would not have been possible without our exemption. This could
potentially expose even users not in the affected country to risks.

Moreover, Wikimedia is not just any website -- it’s a top 5 web
property, and the only non-profit organization among the top sites.
Our actions can have signalling effects on the rest of the web. By
exempting China and Iran from standard security measures, we are
treating them as part of the global web community. It could be argued
that it’s time to draw a line in the sand - if you’re prohibiting the
use of encryption, you’re effectively not part of the web. You’re
subverting basic web technologies.

Drawing this hard line clearly has negative near term effects on the
citizenry of affected countries. But the more the rest of the world
comes together in saying "What you are doing is wrong. Stop it." - the
harder it will be for outlier countries to continue doing it. Another
way to pose the question is: Would we be implementing these exemptions
if China had blocked HTTPS traffic well after we switched to HTTPS?

Moreover, we’re not helpless against censorship. There _are_ effective
tools that can be used to circumvent attempts to censor and control
the Internet. Perhaps it is time for WMF to ally with the
organizations that develop and promote such tools, rather than looking
for ways to guarantee basic site operation in hostile environments
even at the expense of user privacy.

So, what to do? My main sugges

[Wikimediach-l] visual category editing strategy

2013-08-10 Diskussionsfäden rupert THURNER
hi,

as there was recently an agreement on this list to have
hotcat/InclineCategorizer as category editing tool, and even change
the api to do this better [1][2][3], i filed a ticket to remove the
code editing categories from VE. the decision was imo wise, as
category editing in VE, by (current) VE design, can never match
hotcats "1-click user experience", and there are a number of bugs
attached to VE implementation [6]. despite that, andre klapper closed
the ticket as "won't fix" with the comment "there is no functionality
*ready* yet that would replace it. Both Hotcat and Inlinecategorizer
are "not there (yet)". [4]

i saw an update to mzmcbrides ticket from krinkle saying "HotCat
gadget is an established piece of code". but, another sentence is in
there saying "VisualEditor also intends to implement an interface to
edit ... categories".[5]

all these sentences in different tickets sound quite contradicting.
the first reason which came to my mind was "not-invented-here"[7]. but
i am not aware that this is in wikimedia foundations mission ;)

could somebody more knowledgeable shed some light on this?

Hardly. About half of WMF's engineering staff is distributed (both
inside and outside the US), and we've encouraged and supported
software engineering efforts by chapters. I'd actually love to see
much more of that happen, and see other chapters build engineering
capacity over time. It's legally challenging for WMF to have office
presence in multiple jurisdictions, but having independent orgs like
Wikimedia chapters build out development teams doesn't suffer from
that challenge.

We're an open source project; being able to decentralize effort is our
strength. The caveat I would add is that you actually need to ensure
that complex projects are resourced sufficiently. Wikidata is a
success in part because it's a well-resourced, well-managed team, and
the partnership in areas where WMF does need to help was carefully
negotiated.

So, which other chapters are up for building out serious software
engineering capacity?

We have some world class colleges in the UK where we could do a similar

hi,

key to this is to gain the trust, as well that they have had a high
initial trust. these people are, at least imo, very apreciable
persons. we included them closely in the whole process when WLM came
first to switzerland in 2011, and made sure the expectations are
managed. we always tried to make sure to leave a state which allows us
to come back at any time and continue working with each other.

Hey all,

For the last 18 months, the Engineering & Product Development department
has been experimenting with the role of “Community Liaison, Product
Development” - a staff member embedded in the Product team and tasked with
factoring community concerns into our software development process, keeping
editors informed about what we’re doing, and maintaining a dialogue between
those who write code and those who write articles.

While there is always room for improvement, I think this role has shown a
lot of promise. We have a number of large projects coming down the
pipeline (e.g., visual editor, discussion systems) and we need more help
reaching out to our contributor communities, especially our non-English
speaking projects, as our outreach there has traditionally been challenged.
We’d like to recruit a small number of English-speaking or multilingual
editors to do the Community Liaison job with different development teams
and focuses.

In particular we’re looking for people with a strong history of
contributions to our projects who can provide sound and reasoned judgment
and are trusted to do so by their community. Speaking other languages in
addition to English is a major plus, as one of the objectives here is to
ensure we can properly interact with and support non-English projects.
I’ve included the full job description below.

Our immediate need is for help with the Visual Editor. We’d like to hire a
few community liaisons to help inform different Wikipedia language
communities of the upcoming launch, create spaces for feedback and
discussion, synthesize feedback for the Visual Editor team, and other
activities required to support the Visual Editor launch later this year.

If this is a role that would interest you, please e-mail Philippe Beaudette
at
pbeaude...@wikimedia.org.
And if you know someone else who might fit the role, let them know about
it :-). We’re provisionally interested in hiring 2-3 liaisons, at an hourly
rate commensurate with experience. This can be a part-time role, but we’ll
need at least 15 hours/week for the length of the engagement (minimum 3
months). Please do apply if you think it’s a role that suits you, and if
you find places we haven’t notified, spread the word!

Thanks.

Community Liaison Job Description

Background Information and Statement of Purpose

The Wikimedia Foundation’s Engineering & Product Development Department is
looking at ways to more effectively incorporate broad community
perspectives in decisions and hold dialogues with our editors about the
scope, pace and features of upcoming changes to Wikimedia projects. As part
of this, it is hiring additional Community Liaisons from our volunteer
community.

Scope of Work

Support and improve our ongoing software development projects, in
particular:

   -

Building up a network of volunteers from both English language and
non-English language wikis, increasing the number of projects we can
   interact with;
   -

Engaging the community in the software development process, by acting as
a conduit for community questions, bugs and and feature requests, talking
to editors about our work and how they can participate in it effectively,
   and recruiting them for workgroups and studies;
   -

Being available from time to time to provide expertise and knowledge
about our projects, including but not limited to training
externally-sourced staff in the way our projects work, answering their
   questions, and providing expert advice on an ad-hoc basis;
   -

Ensuring that our community is represented in the decision-making
   process and that our planned software adequately reflects user needs;
   -

Monitoring Wikimedia projects, with the assistance of a network of
volunteers, for emerging issues that have an impact on Engineering
   programmes; and
   -

   Other duties as needed.

Requirements

Effective Community Liaisons will be:

   -

Experienced users of Wikimedia projects, capable of representing our
community within the Foundation and vice-versa.
   -

Strong communicators (both verbally and with the written word), able to
explain our products to different groups of users with different levels of
   technical understanding.
   -

Able to focus on the larger picture, understanding which concerns and
views are widespread and which are marginal or individual.
   -

Approachable, as both users and product developers must be able to trust
these people for the relationship to function.
   -

Self-motivated - they will be given important projects and expected to
execute with little to no supervision.

[Wikimediach-l] Fwd: [Wikimedia-l] Patience

2013-05-14 Diskussionsfäden rupert THURNER
a nice mail about getting things done ... and patience.

-- Forwarded message --
From: Michael Snow

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Patience
To: Wikimedia Mailing List

I originally wrote this message last year on a nonpublic list. It
seemed to be well received, and some people asked me to share it
publicly, but I didn't get around to it then. I think this would be a
good time to share it here now. It is not specifically directed at
recent issues here, but I think it does have some relevance. (I have
some thoughts more directly related to those matters as well, which I
hope to share when I have time to write them down. That might not
happen until late Friday, which is probably not the best time for it,
but based on recent history perhaps I can still hope some people will
be reading then.)

Internet technology is known for letting things happen much faster
than they did before we were all so connected. This speed now seems
normal to us and, being immersed in that culture, we have come to
expect it. Wikis, as one aspect of that culture, have the feature of
making that speed a personal tool - you can make something happen
right away. How many of us got involved because we saw a mistake and
figuratively couldn't wait to fix it? And when we discovered that we
literally didn't have to wait, we were hooked.

One result of this is a culture that caters to impatience, sometimes
even rewards it. And that's why we are often tempted to think that
being irritable is a way of getting things done. We imagine: this
problem should be instantly solved, my idea can be implemented right
away, I will be immediately informed about whatever I care about. But
as our culture grows in scale, none of that remains true (and perhaps,
we get more irritated as a result).

I wish I could say that because it's a matter of scale, technology
will take care of things because that's how we handle scaling.
However, the issue is not about whether the technology will scale, but
whether the culture will scale. On a cultural level, scaling issues
are not handled by technology alone. They are handled by establishing
shared values (be bold, but also wait for consensus), by agreeing upon
standard procedures (which provide important protections when designed
well, but also introduce delays), and by dividing up responsibilities
(which requires that we trust others).

That last bit is critical; people have repeatedly suggested a certain
mistrust underlies the repeated flareups. Well, the reason that
mistrust has grown so much is because we are often impatient, and take
shortcuts in order to "get things done" (or so we believe). The
impatience manifests on all sides--to illustrate: volunteers get
impatient about the effort needed for any kind of policy change,
chapters get impatient about requirements to develop internal controls
and share reports on their activities, staff get impatient about time
involved in consulting with the community. Everyone thinks it would be
so much better if they were free to just do things and not have to
deal with these hassles. But in every one of these scenarios, and I'm
sure I could come up with many more, if we let impatience guide us,
inevitably more trust will be drained out of the system.

Patience as a virtue is in short supply on the internet. It is not
native to our culture, but we must apply it in order to scale.
Fortunately, it is simply a matter of maturity and self-control at
appropriate moments. I encourage us all to practice it.

Von: "Maarten Dammers"

Betreff: [WikimediaMobile] Commons app and coordinates
An:

Hi guys,

Last year we build the Wiki Loves Monuments mobile app [1]. In my opinion
this was a good learning experience. The app suggested monuments to take
photographs of based on you location. This information was coming from the
monuments database [2] using the api we build for that purpose [3]. The
monuments database contains over a million items [4], but the data isn't
very clean and i18n was an issue. We had to do a lot of hacking to
compensate for that.

So we need a better structured source of this information and we now have
that: Wikidata. Wikidata doesn't support coordinates yet, but that's just a
matter of time. At some point in the future it will be possible to get
coordinates for an item. If we harvest these items with coordinates and
make them searchable by location (point/bounding box) using for example
Solr/Lucene, we could have a suitable backend for the mobile app to get
information from. This wouldn't just be monuments, but every item with
coordinates. We started a task force [5] to import as much data as possible
about our cultural heritage, thus making the Monuments database in its
current form obsolete.

User story would be something like this: A user would have a way in the app
to find things to take photographs of in the app. User selects an object,
takes a photo. The fields are already filled out with the information from
Wikidata. The photo is uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and tagged with a
template like {{Depicts Wikidata|Q12345}}. This template can be used by the
bot operators on Commons to enhance the metadata of the image (for example
adding better categories).

Are ideas like this on the roadmap for the mobile app? Do you think I
missed something here?

Hi,

We are about to organize a wikiexpedition devoted to train
infrastructure in Poland. It will be officially co-organised with
Polish Railways. Polish Railways will provide us free tickets for
traveling across Poland using any trains and special passes to legally
enter and photograph rail tracks, workshops, rail yards, cargo railway
stations, museums belonging to Polish Railways etc. In order to get
the pass it will be obligatory to undergo a special basic one-day
railtrack safety training which will be provided for free by Polish
Railways employees. Actually we don't know what time it will happen -
for sure during summer, but it is actually to negotiate. It is
possible to have several 2-4 people teams. The requirements will be
just:
*being devoted wiki-photographer ready to submit photos to Wikimedia
Commons under free licences
*being highly crazy about railways stuff - i.e. be ready to travel
across Poland using mainly slow, local trains which stops on every
tiny station, sleep in low cost hostels, feed yourself for 32 PLN a
day :-)
*You don't need to speak Polish - we can try to organize a mixed teams
fro both training and expeditions.

If there is anyone ready for such a wiki-safari - just drop me an E-mail...

adobe has a website where one can set things as well:

where one can e.g. set settings to not ask which then will prevent
help the pop up of the dialogue.

hi beat,

i expect nfc only tags to be cheaper, smaller, and therefor easier to
mount and maintain.and, they are easier to read with phone software.
you do not need to take a foto with (of course unintended) flashlight
in a museum for example. encoding is also easier, as a nfc enabled
phone and the tag suffices. no url to qr conversion, no printing.

bringen.

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Metrics_and_activities_meetings/Quarterly_reviews/VisualEditor-Parsoid,_2013-03-27

Kurt

Hello Wikimedia community members,

This is not an easy e-mail to write, and it’s been a very hard
decision to make. But I’m writing to tell you that I’m planning to
leave my position as the Executive Director of the Wikimedia
Foundation.

My departure isn’t imminent -- the Board and I anticipate it’ll take
at least six months to recruit my successor, and I’ll be fully engaged
as Executive Director all through the recruitment process and until we
have a new person in place. We’re expecting that’ll take about six
months or so, and so this note is not goodbye -- not yet.

Making the decision to leave hasn’t been easy, but it comes down to two things.

First, the movement and the Wikimedia Foundation are in a strong place
now. When I joined, the Foundation was tiny and not yet able to
reliably support the projects. Today it's healthy, thriving, and a
competent partner to the global network of Wikimedia volunteers. If
that wasn’t the case, I wouldn’t feel okay to leave. In that sense, my
leaving is a vote of confidence in our Board and executive team and
staff --- I know they will ably steer the Foundation through the years
ahead, and I’m confident the Board will appoint a strong successor to
me.

And I feel that although we’re in good shape, with a promising future,
the same isn’t true for the internet itself. (This is thing number
two.) Increasingly, I’m finding myself uncomfortable about how the
internet’s developing, who’s influencing its development, and who is
not. Last year we at Wikimedia raised an alarm about SOPA/PIPA, and
now CISPA is back. Wikipedia has experienced censorship at the hands
of industry groups and governments, and we’re --increasingly, I
think-- seeing important decisions made by unaccountable
non-transparent corporate players, a shift from the open web to mobile
walled gardens, and a shift from the production-based internet to one
that’s consumption-based. There are many organizations and individuals
advocating for the public interest online -- what’s good for ordinary
people -- but other interests are more numerous and powerful than they
are. I want that to change. And that’s what I want to do next.

I’ve always aimed to make the biggest contribution I can to the
general public good. Today, this is pulling me towards a new and
different role, one very much aligned with Wikimedia values and
informed by my experiences here, and with the purpose of amplifying
the voices of people advocating for the free and open internet. I
don’t know exactly what this will look like -- I might write a book,
or start a non-profit, or work in partnership with something that
already exists. Either way, I feel strongly that this is what I need
to do.

I feel an increasing sense of urgency around this. That said, I also
feel a strong sense of responsibility (and love!) for the Wikimedia
movement, and so I’ve agreed with the Board that I’ll stay on as
Executive Director until we have my successor in place. That’ll take
some time -- likely, at least six months.

Until then, nothing changes. The Wikimedia Foundation has lots of work
to do, and you can expect me to focus fully on it until we have a new
Executive Director in place.

I have many people to thank, but I’m not going to do it now --
there’ll be time for that later. For now, I’ll just say I love working
with you all, I’m proud of everything the Wikimedia movement is
accomplishing, and I’m looking forward to our next six months
together.

Jan-Bart’s going to write a note in a couple of minutes with
information about the transition process. We’ll be hosting office
hours this weekend as well, so anybody with questions can ask them
here or turn up to talk with us on IRC.

Thanks,
Sue

Interesting

Dear Jon,

Today Google launched the Global Impact Challenge. Over the past few months
ACEVO has been working very closely with Google and think that this
game-changing award will celebrate the innovative work happening within the
sector. So we are inviting charities and voluntary organisations to
showcase how they would use technology to transform the lives of their
beneficiaries. The top four entries of the competition will each receive
£500,000 and support to help their project become a reality. A team at
Google will announce 10 finalists in mid-May and the public will be invited
to vote and donate to their favourite project.

The prestigious panel judging the finalists will be inventor of the
Internet Sir Tim Berners-Lee, Mogul Sir Richard Branson and founder and CEO
of Forster Communications Jilly Forster. It’s thrilling to know how similar
Google and ACEVO’s approach is in celebrating innovation - I feel that this
is the start of a great corporate friendship.

Applications opened today so apply here
www.g.co/impactchallengefor
your chance win.

Best wishes and good luck,

scheint [6].

Hi,

WMCH is glad to announce the first upload during a small pilot project
with the Zentralbibliothek Zürich (ZB) [1]. The topic is public prints
[2], partly from Wickiana [3]. Later on, landscapes, portraits and
material on cultural history will follow. I am not enough expert in
this area, and noticed that i had some difficulties to become more
expert out of wikipedia - therfor any help is greatly appreciated.

My difficulties startet with the translation, and categorization. I
could not figure out if everything of the upload is Wickiana, if the
german "einblattdruck" is really "public print" in english, why there
are some einblattdrucke on the german wikisource, but not on the
english [4] just for a start.

But, i am very impressed about the quality of the upload. As an
example see the Humboldt/Bonplant drawing [5]. One can see the
metadata mentions Bonplant, but if one opens the image, on the left
bottom corner of the picture, different autors are mentioned.

Just a couple of words to the technical realization. ZB exports the
metadata out of their catalog in XML format and uses a (perl) script
packed into a binary to make it run on ZBs a little outdated linux
server. With it ZB is able to upload the pictures themselves. The
original idea was to upload the raw TIFFs as well, but therefor we
need somebody with direct access to the commons server, and it cannot
done by ZB themselves atm.

Hallo poupou, hallo Listenleser,

Also wäre ein solcher
Dachverband grundsätzlich eine gute Idee.

Warum also habe ich mich dennoch gegen die Chapters Association
ausgesprochen?

umsetzen will, ist dabei ins Hintertreffen geraten.

Wikimedia Deutschland e.V.

The Chapters Association (CA) will be an umbrella organization for
Wikimedia chapters established in various regions around the world.
The association represents the common interests of those chapters
within the Wikimedia movement.

One of its goals is to set, review and enforce standards of
accountability and participation among its members. The association
will facilitate the exchange of experiences, ideas, and knowledge
between chapters and assist them in their organizational development
and to develop common programs and projects.

To enhance external communication, coordinate the Wikimedia movement
and represent its chapters on official occasions, CA is looking for an
experienced and motivated person to become the full-time

Secretary-General (f/m)

of the Chapters Association.
CA is incorporated in Geneva, however depending on your place of
residence a relocation might not be necessary.

 Job description

The Secretary-General is to be head of the CA?s Secretariat as defined
by the CA?s charter. The Secretariat performs the executive powers of
the Association. The Secretary-General will be elected by the Council.
The other Members of the Secretariat are appointed by the
Secretary-General, with the consent of the Council. The Secretariat
reports to the Council on the Association's activities and has the
right to submit proposals for Council resolutions.

She/He will be responsible for:

 * Defining the organizational structure, publishing job offers and
   hiring the officers of the secretariat;
 * Building the strategic plan for the association;
 * Assuring the financial stability of the organization;
 * Coordinating between all association members;
 * Building annual program plans to achieve the CA mission;
 * Handling all formal administrative tasks including finance,
   communications, legal and technical;
 * and preparing the assemblies of the CA council.

 Desired personal traits

 * Leader -- the selected Secretary-General will have to build the
organization from its earliest stages according to the outlines set
   by the CA council.
 * Administrator -- some of the tasks of the Secretary-General would be
of administrative nature. She/He would have to write detailed
program plans, review by-laws, financial reports, program plans and
   program reports of other organizations.
 * Excellent communication skills -- one of the the Secretary-General's
primary tasks would be to communicate with member chapters. Those
chapters are dispersed in different regions of the worlds
representing various cultural habits. The selected Secretary-General
would have to be multi-culturally-minded to work effectively with
   these partners.
 * Willing and able to travel world-wide.
 * Proven experience with building and managing a large diverse
   organization.
 * Comfortable working with people at all levels of the organization,
   including community members and volunteers.
 * Experience in other like-minded/ international/ volunteer-driven/
non-profit/ peer-review-driven organizations would be considered as
   an advantage.

 * The ideal candidate will be hard-working, creative,
highly-motivated, and able to operate and effectively manage
multiple cultural contexts, time-zones and expectations
 * Incredible diplomatic problem-solving skills in an international
environment as well as the ability to deal comfortably and
efficiently with ambiguity and an ever changing environment

 * Must be fluent in English; skill in other languages would be
   considered as an advantage.

Great to have

 * University degree
 * Experience within the Wikimedia movement. However, according to CA?s
charter a Member of the Secretariat cannot be a Council Member or
hold a position in a Chapter or in the Wikimedia Foundation.
 * Love working with a highly collaborative, consensus oriented environment

Subject: [VereinAT-l] Wikimedia-Server übersiedeln
To: "\"Wikimedia Österreich\""

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashburn_%28Virginia%29 )

MfG
Beppo

Betreff: [VereinDE-l] Über bezahlte Artikel reden
An: "Mailingliste des Wikimedia Deutschland e.V. / mailing list of the

Wikipedia-Admin seit Februar 2004, ehemals 2005 WMDE-Vorstandsmitglied,

Schreiben in Wikipedia? Welche Hilfe braucht die Eingangskontrolle? Welche
Hilfe die Fachportale? Wo sind bestehende Konfliktlinien? Wer hat schon das
Angebot bekommen, gegen Artikel Geld zu schreiben? Wer hat das Angebot
angenommen? Wer hat eine Meinung zu den GLAM-Kooperationen? Wer kann sich
Wikipedians in Residence in Unternehmen vorstellen?

Dirk Franke

$50 Android Smartphones Are Disrupting Africa Much Faster Than You Think,
Says Wikipedia’s Jimmy Wales

What phone does Wikipedia founder
Jimmy Wales have in his pocket? An unlocked Android-powered 3G smartphone,
made by Chinese mobile maker Huawei – which was selling for $85 on the
streets of Kenya last year and now goes for $50.

While the majority of Africa’s mobile phones are more basic talk-plus-text
feature phones — recent figures from analyst ABI
Research
suggest
3G connectivity accounts for 11 percent of the continent’s overall mobile
subscriptions vs. GSM’s 62.7 percent – 300,000 of these $50 Android
smartphones have been sold in Kenya, according to Wales and African carrier
Safaricom’s CEO Bob Collymore. The pair were speaking at Vodafone’s Mobile
for Good summit taking place in London today.

“What I always thought about mobile in Africa…is this [smartphone adoption]
is coming in the future — in the future someday,” said Wales. “Well the
someday’s happening faster than I ever realised.”

Wales’ own budget Android was brought back from Kenya by a friend and is
now his personal smartphone. “The screen is a little smaller than the
iPhone, it’s not quite as good but the battery lasts two days,” he joked.

The Wikipedia founder has been spending the past couple of years
working on Wikipedia
Zero – a project that’s
aiming to broaden access to the online encyclopedia to those who don’t own
a computer or can’t get access to 3G mobile data – but he says the pace of
smartphone adoption in Africa is changing the digital landscape of the
continent much faster than people think.

The pace caught Wikipedia by surprise. The not-for-profit organisation had
been focusing its emerging markets’ efforts on India but is now paying a
lot more attention to Africa, thanks to the growth in ownership of cheap,
Android-powered handsets — like the one in Wales’ pocket.

“This phone actually woke my mind up,” said Wales, pulling the handset out
of his pocket and holding it up. “This is what really got me energised to
say let’s go back and take another look at Africa, because we had focused
most of our attention on India with the view that it was ready for us to do
things.”

“If you go and you take a look at the numbers [of smartphone adoption in
Africa]… the upward trend — obviously it’s still a very small penetration –
but that upward trend is there really strongly. If you look at the total
bandwidth into Nigeria, for example, it’s skyrocketing.

“Things that are very hard for us to all imagine are going to happen much
faster than we realise,” he added. “People are going to be coming online
for the first time. There’s this vibrant community of young app developers
growing in Kenya and Nigeria.

“It’s mind-boggling to think what the possibilities are — and I’m super
excited about it.”

Hallo @all,

erstellen.

Viele Grüße

Marco

I

picked to illustrate in some sense the relation of Wikipedia with academic
and professional standards.

Furthermore, as you can see in the side-notice, there's an info regarding
the fundraising, citing the PR. I think the timing was really good in this

soweit: Die erste Besetzung steht.
* Arjuna Rao Chavala
* Dariusz Jemielniak
* Ali Haidar Khan
* Mike Peel
* Yuri Perohanych
* Sydney Poore
* Anders Wennersten

Stimmberechtigung. Es sind
* Patricio Lorente
* Jan-Bart de Vreede

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Funds_Dissemination_Committee/2012_FDC_members

neun Mitgliedern aufgestockt. Dann werden zwei weitere Mitglieder von
den Communitys gewählt.

Viele Grüße,
Alice Wiegand

Hello Everyone

Because Anasuya is taking a small weekend break she asked me to post
the shortlist of candidates after going through it one more time with
the FDC Advisory Group.

I just posted that list on:

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Funds_Dissemination_Committee/2012_Shortlist_FDC_Nominees

I also would like to take this opportunity to all candidates, whether
or not they made this shortlist. As you know the FDC has an important
role in funds dissemination and we are very grateful that so many of
you volunteered to help make it a success! Also a thank you to all
those involved in the selection process so far :)

The next steps for the final selection process are also outlined on

Betreff: [Wiki Loves Monuments] help for the guinness world record proof
An: "Wiki Loves Monuments Photograph Competition" <
wikilovesmonume...@lists.wikimedia.org>

Hi all,

as you may recall, we have applied for recognition as a guinness world
record with the 165.000+ images of 2011. However, to finalize that
application, I need some help. We need to determine the final number of
submitted picture - and will need two witnesses who will sign a statement.
I'm pretty far with the witnesses - but need some help in making it easy
for them to confirm the full number of images.

I thought the easiest way would be twofold:
- make sure that the category 'Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2011' is
"clean" - that there are only valid images there.
- create a list of url's with all submitted images.

To do that, I'd use the following definition of a valid submission:
- For Switzerland, images submitted in July, August or September 2011
(starting time is in UTC+2, closing time in UTC+0).
- For all other countries, images submitted in September 2011 (including
Hungary, since the images submitted later were not considered for the
international contest)
- For all countries, possible delayed bot uploads (we'd need to manually
identify those)
- For all countries, the image has to contain the {{Wiki Loves
Monuments|country code}} template (I don't think other templates were in
use)
- For all images, check whether it is a derivative of an existing image
(probably easiest to just list all images that fulfill all other
requirements and have a 'other versions' mention - and manually check those)

This should add up to all the images that were considered as a valid
submission and could have been nominated for the international contest. Am
I missing anything?

It would be great if someone could dig through the category and help clean
it. Also, if someone could use a script to generate this list of url's once
that is done. That way, for the proof we can both make a screenshot of the
category, showing the full number, and count the list of url's and let the
witnesses do some random checks on them.

Best,

Lodewijk

(If you're on the Cultural Partners list you might already have heard about
this, apologies if so)

In a few weeks time Wikimedia UK will be holding, jointly with JISC, a
World War I editathon. The aim of this is to bring academics who study the
War together with Wikimedians who write (mainly) Wikipedia articles. We
have some great people from both communities coming along (and there is
still space for more, if you're interested, jump in!)

As it involves university lecturers it's pretty clearly education-relevant,
though in fact I think it's more closely modelled on the British Museum
Hoxne Hoard collaboration than anything else.

The favour I need to ask is that while I have academics in the room I
should probably talk at least a very little bit about how the Education
Programme has worked in the US and elsewhere - is there a one page summary
anywhere that I can work in while I'm talking about more military
history-focused stuff?

More details of the event here:
http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/World_War_I/World_War_I_Editathon

Many thanks,

Chris

Von: "Denis Barthel"

Betreff: [VereinAT-l] Strategieklausur Wikimedia Österreich -- 2012 bis 2015
An: "Austrian Chapter" , "Mailingliste der
deutschsprachigen Wikipedia"

Liebe Mitglieder,

** Was waren unsere Erfolge?
** Was läuft nicht zufriedenstellend?
** Was tun andere Wikimedia-Vereine, was wir nicht tun?
** Was könnte man sonst noch tun?

** '''Internationale Arbeit''' - Konferenzstipendien /
Chapter-Förderkooperationen / Projekt-Kooperationen
** '''Community-Arbeit''' - Content: Förderung der Erstellung von Material
für die Wikimedia-Projekte / Community-Building: Vertrauen etc.
** '''Externes''' - Kooperationen mit ähnlichen Organisationen / Lobbying /
Wissenschaftsarbeit / Bildungsarbeit / GLAM etc.

http://mitglieder.wikimedia.**at/Projekte/Zukunft.
Das Rohmaterial kann als Verlaufsprotokoll unter
http://mitglieder.wikimedia.**at/Projekte/Zukunft/Protokollnachgelesen

http://dip21.bundestag.de/dip21/btd/17/092/1709245.pdf.

durchzugehen? Es könnte spannend werden.

Viele Grüße,
Mathias

[Wikimediach-l] alfred escher letters online, handwriting pops up ...

2012-04-04 Diskussionsfäden rupert THURNER
hi,

the way alfred escher letters are made available online is imo
technically very interesting. you can hover with the mouse over the
printed text and see the handwriting in a pop up.

example francais:

example deutsch:

[Wikimediach-l] most interesting in zürich central library, europeana cooperation ...

2012-04-04 Diskussionsfäden rupert THURNER
hi,

WMCH has / had quite a lot of contacts with GLAMS, especially in the
romandie. did you encounter Europeana as well there or was a
cooperation / link to europeana sometimes topic of the talks?

the reason why i am asking:
in the last years different people participated in more or less
informal meetings with people from the zürich central library, who
maintains links to europeana.

And coupled to it, i was also wondering if we should strive for a
cooperation with the central library. and if we do, which collections
would be the easiest and most interesting to start such a cooperation.
just to copy, without particular order, a brief overview of special
out of their website. they have special collections like:
  * manuscripts
  * rare books
  * prints / drawings /photos
see e.g.
http://www.zb.uzh.ch/spezialsammlungen/graphische-sammlung/index.html.en
  * maps
  * musik
  * bequets (nachlässe)

they have also real and virtual exhibitions, and a huge archive. and
it seems they are digitizing contents as well for other institutions.

what you think?

rupert.
