[Wikimediaindia-l] 34th Bangalore Wiki Meetup, Sunday 12June2011
Hi Folks, This is again a good news to inform you that 34th Bangalore Wiki Meetup is just over! Bangalore Wiki Community's 34th Meetup was attended by 16 enthusiast attendees. The meetup went through 2 talks by Tory Read and Achal Prabhala and post talk discussions and networking. *Tory Read’s Talk:* *[ Tory, being a photographer, artist and journalist in profession works basically in arts, humanity, behavioral approach of humans to a new technology and strategic thinking. ] *In her visit to India she has been visiting places, meeting people who are taking part in the WMF initiatives and documenting them in the form of Images/Audio/Video files. For her, photography is a tool to understand how organizations like Wikimedia work. She explained the focus of her ongoing project which is based on making Wikipedia more supportive, how well they could help people, the good and bad points in its organization system, strategic thinking of Wikipedia in India, both in English and regional languages. She has interviewed people of varied personal and professional backgrounds and recorded almost 25 videos which she’d be uploading to commons. She has met Bishakha Datta in Mumbai, visited Pune Pilot Program campus, taken part in interacting with 22 campus ambassadors, attended Kannur Malayalam Wiki Meetup along with Bishakha and Hisham, trvelled Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and interviewed several Malayalam Wikipedians, from a very-young-Wikipedian to a Heart-Stroke-Patient-Wikipedian. Tory would be documenting the history of Wikipedia along with the work pattern, strategic plans, cons and pros of new initiatives based on the behavioral function. *Achal Prabhala’s talk:** [Achal is an Indian researcher, activist and writer based in Bangalore, Karnataka. It has received widespread community support from Wikipedians across the country on the mailing list. We also take note of the fact that there is no visible active intent to make a bid to host the event from other cities. The previous note from Executive Committee (EC) clearly indicates the intent and commitment to run an annual event, year on year, with the support of other stakeholders in the movement. To that end we request that the organising team of this year's event keep this an important objective. EC had previously made a proposal for such an event many in early 2011 but it was then deferred to September due to other procedural hurdles in getting all aspects of a formal entity up and running - A bank account being a prerequisite to execute the plan. EC regrets the communication gaps and discomfort caused in some quarters due to misunderstandings of intent which our earlier email clearly and directly addresses. The Wikimedia movement is community driven and we reiterate that involving the community is and will be a key priority for your Chapter and Executive Committee. We request everyone's support for the Mumbai-Pune efforts to organise the 2011 WikiConference. Please consider this note a full and complete support of the India Chapter for the event. We thank the Mumbai and Pune Wikimedians again for the passion and leadership in working towards organising the first edition of this event. We will engage and work with the Mumbai team and other Wikipedians on the specific aspects of the frame work. As indicated in the earlier email, it was meant to be a draft seeking comments from other stakeholders. There were a few other aspects that were highlighted to which we would like to provide the following: *Feedback #1: Treat us like equals and stakeholders. Amongst us, chapter will then be first among equals.* The Chapter is only a part of the Community and should be reflective of it. If the impression was otherwise, we apologise and

If the amount is relatively small this makes sense, however for higher amounts we may as well sign up with a merchant as that would be cheaper if we have volume. Rather than requesting funds through NEFT (which is a better mode for payments such as membership fee etc), for this you could opt for Net Banking or even cheques by post! As for 80G, the more you run after it the more the babu will want from you. If you put a bundle on the table, the certificate will be in your hand in days. However, from experience I can tell you, if you dont bother about it - just complete official formalities, the form will come by post to your office in due course. Also we are not probably looking at large scale(We would love if they come), but typically my equivalents to 5 10 20 dollors would 250 500 1000 INR for which most would not take trouble of getting receipts and eventually getting the benefit(Atleast the folks who do online donations) since the tax benefit would be negligible. +1 So my next question is without which are we eligible to collect donations online, would just like to know the bureaucracy around it? I now know the chapter can receive donations through NEFT[1].If we are good to go then the next thing to work out would be a payment gateway / payments partner helping us in giving options to various bank netbanking / credit/debit cards, ofcourse a decent API. The more the merrier. Also if we could get some sponsorship/deal from them in terms of the cut they take for transaction cost. People who have experience with online payment solutions can add their inputs. http://www.ccavenue.com/ works best for accepting payments online from various netbanking accounts in India. [Wikimediaindia-l] Invitation to join Chapter as Member by 23 June 2011 to participate in EC elections during AGM
Hi Wikimedians, The Chapter has a statutory requirement that we have our first Annual General Body meeting before the end of September 2011. We plan on holding this, in Bangalore, on 24 Sep 2011. (Note: We had earlier mentioned the date as 17 Sep 2011 but this was changed based on unforeseen changes in the schedules of EC members and to give more time for members to join in.) Filling vacancies in the EC will be one major item on the agenda of AGM. That said, only people who have become members at least three months prior to the date of the AGM are eligible to stand and to vote. Please remember that there is allowance for those members not in Bangalore to vote as well. What we will do in the next 2 weeks is to begin a draft nomination process and send it for your feedback and inputs. Hence we urge you to join Wikimedia Chapter by 23 June 2011, if you have not yet applied for membership. Please spread this message with your fellow wikimedians and encourage them to apply for membership immediately. The Individual membership formhttp://wiki.wikimedia.in/File:WikimediaChapterMembershipFormIndividual.pdf along with either Cheque/DD payable at par at Bangalore should be received by 23 June 2011 at Chapter's office. If you are using online transfer, please send a scanned copy of your membership form before 23 June 2011 to members...@wikimedia.in along with your online payment details and ensure that your physical membership form reaches chapter office before 30 June 2011. We are really looking forward to an active and strong interest in the Chapter from the Community.
