For SVG translation, use this tool:

My suggestion would be, let the respective language community do the
translation. Transliteration may not work work all the time.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Request for a new list

2011-06-19 Thread Ashwin Baindur
Hi,

I'm user:AshLin, co-chair of the Working Group for a forthcoming
Wiki-conference in India in November 2011. I'm writing formally to you to
request for a list for that event; a request which you may have
already received informally from Shiju Alex.

The event will definitely be taking place on 18-20 November 2011 at Mumbai
and we have already requested Jimbo's presence at the event (as an example
of the event's firming up).

This is a joint venture between the Indian Chapter and the Indian Wikimedia
community and will henceforth be an annual feature. We were about to start
communications of the Working Group on a Google Group but community members
have asked if our email group can be hosted by the Foundation and be a
mailman list. If provided, it is planned to use this list for planning and
organising all national wikiconferences in India henceforth.

The advantages, we feel, are that the list and its archives will be
preserved and secure while the Foundation exists, ease of use & interface as
all of us are used to mailman lists for community communication to date and
that the future of the group will not be dependent upon Google policies.

We request that the list be named "WikiConference India", to distinguish it
from other types of WikiConferences such as the Wikimania series.

Should other countries decide to have annual national conferences, perhaps
their lists could be named "WikiConference " (where is name of the
country) similarly.

Looking forward to a positive and early response so that we can begin our
organising activities.

Warm regards,

Ashwin Baindur

we can send it individually?

Thank you.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Request for a new list

2011-06-19 Thread Theo10011
I believe you need to file a bug for this Ashwin. If you want, I can file it
for you and get someone to close the request.

Are you sure about the title? I would suggest something like
WikiIndia-events or Wikimediaindia-events list. So that it doesn't become
useless after the event and can be re-used for coordinating future events.
The naming convention for the list also depends on country codes and
previous naming convention, Wikimediaindia-events would be a sub-list of
Wikimediaindia-l.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Request for a new list

2011-06-19 Thread Ashwin Baindur
Hi Salmaan,

Thanks for the offer! Shiju is just waiting for a reply from Casey Browne
before we file the bug. Since we have formally asked, it would be
appropriate to wait for a while for the response.

As regards the name, there are now a large amount of activities, lists etc
communities, meet-ups etc coming up in India. We now need a finer level of
grading between Foundation, chapter and community driven ventures - hence we
are a little chary of appending "media" unless it is directly driven by or
associated with Chapter or Foundation. Secondly, events are of many types,
whereas we want a list specifically for the annual national conference and
perhaps other conferences in India, hence the need felt for the word
"conference".

Warm regards,

Ashwin Baindur

I agree with Ashwin, I doubt it would make sense to form a list for only
this year/event. it's the same way for other activities, those lists have to

or associated with Chapter or Foundation. Secondly, events are of many
types, whereas we want a list specifically for the annual national
conference and perhaps other conferences in India, hence the need felt for
 the word "conference".

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Massive increase in copyright term for photographs

2011-06-19 Thread Pranesh Prakash
Dear Gautam, Srikanth, and Ashwin and all,
Thank you for your enthusiasm. I don't have a form letter, as I wanted
to test the waters first and see if there was interest.

If one of you could help me draft the letter (I'm looking at you,
Gautam), that would be appreciated.

I think it would be best if the letter was sent to the Copyright Office,
the Ministry (of HRD, which administers copyright), as well as the
sender's MP. I'll try and get an online form through which this could
be accomplished soon. However, this will need also to be translated to
calls, snail mail (registered post so you get receipt on delivery), and
faxes.

Regards,
Pranesh

However, it is one thing to get something that is good (broad exception

harm: decrease of the public domain in terms of Indian photographs. The
first is a longer term goal than the second.

Copyright term of photographs is going to increase if folks don't stand

Ashwin, How about when the conference get arranged next year. You cannot
still use the same list name, as that would not help in distinctiveness. May
be we should think about adding the year as well (in full eg:2011 instead of

 Hi,

I'm user:AshLin, co-chair of the Working Group for a forthcoming
Wiki-conference in India in November 2011. I'm writing formally to you to
request for a list for that event; a request which you may have
already received informally from Shiju Alex.

The event will definitely be taking place on 18-20 November 2011 at
Mumbai and we have already requested Jimbo's presence at the event (as an
example of the event's firming up).

This is a joint venture between the Indian Chapter and the Indian
Wikimedia community and will henceforth be an annual feature. We were about
to start communications of the Working Group on a Google Group but
 community
members have asked if our email group can be hosted by the Foundation and
 be
a mailman list. If provided, it is planned to use this list for planning
 and
organising all national wikiconferences in India henceforth.

The advantages, we feel, are that the list and its archives will be
preserved and secure while the Foundation exists, ease of use & interface
 as
all of us are used to mailman lists for community communication to date and
that the future of the group will not be dependent upon Google policies.

We request that the list be named "WikiConference India", to
distinguish it from other types of WikiConferences such as the Wikimania
 series.

Should other countries decide to have annual national conferences,
perhaps their lists could be named "WikiConference " (where is
 name
 of the country) similarly.

Looking forward to a positive and early response so that we can begin
 our organising activities.

 Warm regards,

 Ashwin Baindur

Are you sure about the title? I would suggest something like
WikiIndia-events or Wikimediaindia-events list. So that it doesn't become
useless after the event and can be re-used for coordinating future events.
The naming convention for the list also depends on country codes and
previous naming convention, Wikimediaindia-events would be a sub-list of
 Wikimediaindia-l.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [Foundation-l] Announcement: Selected Books from Malayalam Wikisource on CD released

2011-06-19 Thread Shiju Alex
Dear All,

We completed one week of Malayalam Wikisource offline
release.
Here is some statistics that we have: (Thanks to Jyothis for compiling this)

Hits to the ISO image : *46,922* (this is just number of hits. This does not
mean that all 46,922 hits lead to complete/successful downloads. We assume
at least 70-80% of those hits would be complete downloads.

   - 3,15,274 hits for mlwiki.in- the site hosting iso image and online
   version of Offline(Yes! :) ) on *June 12.*
   - 4,30,959 on *June 13*th
   - 2,30,985 on *June **14*th
   - 1,04,280 on *June **15*th

Yesterday we have started a torrent link also for the ISO image (
http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/6477957). So downloads are happening in that
way also now.

Here are the links by which you can access Malayalam wikisource offline
release.

   - iso Image
   - Torrent link

   - Online browsing

Remember, last year the download count of Malayalam wikipedia offline
version 1.0 one week after the release was around 5000.

We found that the interest in Malayalam Wikisource offline is more than that
of Malayalam Wikipedia offline.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Request for a new list

2011-06-19 Thread Ashwin Baindur
We were told that only a Google group was possible but since we could get
that from the web itself and since Google can change its policies, the
consensus was to go for a mailman list on Wikimedia server due to its
permanency.

However, if mailman program can be put in place on the Wikimedia.in server
and space promised permanently for the archives, that would be great. As of
now the Wikimedia people noted that a lot of list requests come from India.
In future they may be chary to give more lists especially to our smaller
communities and language groups, especially at the rate we are growing.

Warm regards,

Ashwin Baindur

That's not necessarily a bad thing though, since activity in India has
really been growing lately. You guys actually use the lists -- I'm on
a lot of them and I know how much activity they get ;-) -- so there's
not a huge problem with creating Wikimedia mailing lists for you guys.
I just thought it was funny that a large proportion of requests come
from India. :-)

Don't feel like you guys are unwanted or are asking for too much!

[Wikimediaindia-l] WikiConference India - Minutes 18-6-2011

2011-06-19 Thread wheredevelsdare

*Minutes of the Planning Meet which took place on 18-6-2011 (Saturday) in
Mumbai*
**Cross posted on India/Mumbai/Pune lists - please forward to other City or
Language lists that you may be a part of**

1. Name of conference - there were 3 suggestions. There was an idea that these
could be put up for a week on Meta - asking people to vote for their choice (or
make other suggestions):

a. '''Wikimela'''

Advantage: English/Hindi Fusion

Possible issue: Mela has different meanings (could be miscontrued for a
carnival!)

b. '''Wiki Conference India'''

Advantage: Simplicity

Possible Issue: A bit to generic.

c. '''WikiMania India'''

Advantage: Global image of the name

Possible Issue: Could be confused with the global meet

2. All Documents to be posted on meta where a dedicated page will be made on
meta.

3. Coordination among OC - Mail, Sabse bolo (Telepone) - minutes to be taken
and calls to be moderated to ensure everyone has their say.

4. Master list - cross postings! A seperate mailing list to be made for the OC

5. Logo for the event - request for design to be posted on India list.

6. 3 office bearers. Chairperson/President of the event from Mumbai , Secretary
in Pune and Tresurer from Mumbai. These 3 will be on the ground and will have
visiting cards and letterheads made specifically for this event only.

7. Advisory committee - Hisham, Bishaka, Arjun, Achal

8. Working groups and functional team: Everyone to choose sub-committees they
want to be part of - Based on functionality. The OC as it stands at the moment
will be redone - everyone part of sub-committees except office bearers and
advisors who will be part of everything/advise everyone.

9. Venue - University of Mumbai (South Campus) was the unanimous choice. Again,
will be put up on the India list - with a 72 hour deadline for people to
respond (Similarly all other major decisions to be put on mailing list before
execution).

10. Accommodation: 4 on the table thus far. YWCA, Astoria, Chateau Windsor and
Sea Green - all within 5-15 minutes walking of the venue, Ensuite,
Airconditioned rooms. YWCA, Chateau Windor, Sea Green all on par so can be
offered to people with 100% scholarships. Astoria is equivalent to a 3 star so
can be offered to those with 75% or 90% scholarship. Another few hotels are due
to be checked out this week.

11. Teams:
Finance / Audit
Sponsorship
Scholarship
Media and pr
Volunteer
Speaker management
Program
Community communication
Venue
Logistics
IT team
Conference planning
Party plans

12. Finance: Joint accounts to be created 4 signatories (2 from Mumbai, 2 from
Chapter). New A/c will be in Chapter name and will be for Conference purpose.
At the end of the year Mumbai reps will be replaced with reps from next host
and money rolled over for next conference (any overflow). Everyone to pitch in
with Sponsors. Sponsors could be in cash or kind. Eg. Looking for airline
sponsor to get people to Mumbai or just cash which can be used for the
conference.

13. Party: Royal Bombay Yatch Club to be asked for a quote as well as Bombay
Presidency Radio Club

14. Decisions to be made on Consensus or by Simple Majority if consensus not
possible.

15. Time limits: Time limits to be set for everything so that everything goes
on time.

Dear All,

Bishakha, Moksh, Pradeep and myself visited the Unviersity of Mumbai (Fort
Campus) last week to consider it as a venue for the upcoming WikiConference in
November 2011. We had a look at the facilites they had to offer and we were
impressed. They are offering us use of:

1. Convocation Hall - A standalone building within the Campus
a. Sir Cowasjee Jehangir Convocational Hall
b. Viewing Gallery
c. 1st floor balcony on both sides of the Viewing Gallery overlooking the lawns
d. A small terrace over the porch and the lawns
2. 2 seminar sooms - A/c with capacity of 100 persons each (between 10am and
3.30pm on Friday - for the weekend we can get it upto 6pm if there are no
classes scheduled). These are in the adjoining building and are literally 2
minutes walking from the Convocation Hall.
3. Use of Lawns
4. Parking for 20-25 cars within the premises

Costs:

Rs. 94,000/- for the 3 days for the Convocation Hall (discount possible if we
complete certain paperwork)
Rs. 3500/- for each Seminar room on weekdays and Rs.4500/- on weekends.
