Nitika,
The term ownership doesn't exist here.
Yes, while I welcome BPositive and hope that he helps us increase the
Quality of Indian articles,
I really don't like this Ownership thing people talk about.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [Wikimedia-in-en] New Volunteer joins WikiProject India team

2012-02-16 Thread Ashwin Baindur
Oh, I am under no apprehensions about ownership of WikiProject India. I am
only a volunteer who tends to it as SIG chair on being requested by some
colleagues. So it is my something in my care - a trust belonging to the
people in which I look after something which belongs to all.

Ownership here can only mean the feeling that Wikipedia "belongs" to all of
us and because of that it is inherently good and desirable of us to work
for it - not that I "own" this or that article. When you "own" something
you care about it and work for it. I am sure that is what is meant by
Nitika.

Warm regards,

Ashwin Baindur

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [Wikimedia-in-en] New Volunteer joins WikiProject India team

2012-02-16 Thread Ashwin Baindur
Thanks for the heads up Parakara Ghoda, I'm sure Nitika will be careful
about using this term.

On the other hand, when it comes to doing things especially where
responsibility is concerned, we do find that few people come forward to
volunteer and "own" a process or responsibility. We saw that at
WikiConference 2011 and we see it even now in the community. We'd love that
people feel more involved to as to wish to play greater organisational
roles.

As has BPositive in taking over a responsibility, a mature and responsible
act in my view  :).

There are literally hundreds of little roles which can be defined which can
help the community grow.

I'd love to see people feel Wikipedia was their "own" rather than feel that
the "other guy" should take over the more onerous tasks.

Warm regards,

Ashwin Baindur

I really look forward to working with you all on this project.

As far the term "ownership" is concerned, I don't think Nitika literally

with work. :)

 Ownership here can only mean the feeling that Wikipedia "belongs" to

[Wikimediaindia-l] Please add your name to the Geographical List of Indian Wikipedians

2012-02-16 Thread Ashwin Baindur
Hello friends,

This is a link I recommend you to bookmark.

http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Geographical_distribution_of_Indian_Wikipedians

This list is useful for outreach & also whenever someone needs Wiki-Help in
a particular city. It would be great if Wikipedians could update this
list.:)

We have the following completely unrepresented states/UTs:

* Andaman & Nicobar Islands
* Arunachal Pradesh
* Assam
* Chandigarh
* Chhattisgarh
* Dadra, Nagar & Haveli
* Daman & Diu
* Goa
* Himachal Pradesh
* Jammu & Kashmir
* Jharkhand (AngPradesh is in Mumbai)
* Lakshadweep
* Manipur
* Meghalaya
* Mizoram
* Puducherry
* Punjab (oye, ye ki hoya!)
* Nagaland
* Uttar Pradesh
* Uttarakhand

Okay, all you admins, please update your status (Mikey my boy, that means
you too)!

Abroad, we dont have Indic Wikipedians listed for:
* Africa
* Australia
* Asia (other than India)
* Middle East
* North America
* South America

Unless you would like to stay off list, of course that's acceptable too.

May I also request Tinu / list admins to please forward it all the Indic
language & city Wikimedia lists. We need this resource to be as
comprehensible as possible.

Warm regards,

Ashwin Baindur

2012-02-16 Thread Ashwin Baindur
Shiju, I request you to forward this to Wikimedia-in-en. This is also an
Indic language list & as such such a generic post will help WikiProject
Indians to be of more relevance to Indic language WikiProjects.

I could forward it myself but I prefer you to do it and add this list to
your language wikipedia email group list.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [Wikimedia-in-en] Please add your name to the Geographical List of Indian Wikipedians

2012-02-16 Thread CherianTinu Abraham
And This page  http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Mailing_Lists ,
gives you more information on which are lists that you should forward this
to :)

Btw to edit this public wiki, you will need to create a username and email
confirm
it
( takes only ~20 sec to do). Wanted to keep it IP editable too, but thanks
to heavy spam which we weren't able to handle, we had to keep it this way.

Thanks

[Wikimediaindia-l] Please sign up for WikiProject India if you are an English language Wikipedian (yes, English is an Indic language)

2012-02-16 Thread Ashwin Baindur
I suddenly realised that amongst the guys who signed up for WikiProject
India in Jan-Feb are such hardcore Wikipedians as RSrikanth05, Joyson
Prabhu, Karthikndr & Sitush.

Which brings me to the corollary - there are oodles of established Indian
editors who are not yet members of WikiProject India!

Gosh, guys please sign up!

 Dear All,

 I have compiled the, statistical update of the Indic language
 Wikipedias for the year 2011. In this report, my aim is to provide an *
 analysis* as well as *my perspectives* on the health of various Indic
 language communities as well as the state of various Indic language
 wikipedias for the year 2011. (The period of analysis is editor
 contributions between 2011 January 1 and 2011 December 31). As always,
 a lot of the data for this report and analysis are based on the statistical
 data published at http://stats.wikimedia.org. Thanks to Erik Zachte
 for compiling all this information.

 I must also point out that this annual update contains a number of
 insights *that are derived not only from this data but directly from
 community members* who have shared a very real-world picture.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Please add your name to the Geographical List of Indian Wikipedians

2012-02-16 Thread Pradeep Mohandas
hi,

I'll try and get my next job in one of these un-represented places.
Goa, sounds like fun :)

Thanks for the reminder, Aswin.

 Hello friends,

 This is a link I recommend you to bookmark.

 http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Geographical_distribution_of_Indian_Wikipedians

 This list is useful for outreach & also whenever someone needs Wiki-Help
 in a particular city. It would be great if Wikipedians could update this
 list.:)

 We have the following completely unrepresented states/UTs:

 * Andaman & Nicobar Islands
 * Arunachal Pradesh
 * Assam
 * Chandigarh
 * Chhattisgarh
 * Dadra, Nagar & Haveli
 * Daman & Diu
 * Goa
 * Himachal Pradesh
 * Jammu & Kashmir
 * Jharkhand (AngPradesh is in Mumbai)
 * Lakshadweep
 * Manipur
 * Meghalaya
 * Mizoram
 * Puducherry
 * Punjab (oye, ye ki hoya!)
 * Nagaland
 * Uttar Pradesh
 * Uttarakhand

 Okay, all you admins, please update your status (Mikey my boy, that
 means you too)!

 Abroad, we dont have Indic Wikipedians listed for:
 * Africa
 * Australia
 * Asia (other than India)
 * Middle East
 * North America
 * South America

 Unless you would like to stay off list, of course that's acceptable too.

 May I also request Tinu / list admins to please forward it all the Indic
 language & city Wikimedia lists. We need this resource to be as
 comprehensible as possible.

 Warm regards,

 Ashwin Baindur
