Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] accommodation in Delhi - can some one help?

2013-12-24 Thread Debanjan Bandyopadhyay
There are various pgs as well as cheap but decent hotels that would be
available here. Areas near Karol Bagh and Paharganj would give you various
cheap hotels, though Paharganj wouldn't be the best idea. Still, I've
stayed in Hotel Shelton <http://www.booking.com/hotel/in/shelton.html> in
Paharganj and it's very near the metro and not too bad either.

Also in current weather, you will get a decent non ac room for around 900
bucks. Other than that checking online would give you access to better
accommodation. There are lots of people who would love to rent their pgs or
apartments as at this time most students go back home for holidays.

Karol Bagh side would be slightly more expensive ~ 1600. I stay near Karol
Bagh, so if you require any help, please inform me. These areas are very
well connected via Metro and close to the New Delhi Railway station. Other
areas will drive up the cost, esp in South Delhi. I myself would've joined
this workshop but my schedule might not permit it.

Feel free to drop me a message or call if you need any assistance. I'm not
sharing my number as this is an open list, but drop me a separate email,
and I'll help out the best way I can.

Hey, I'd love to help out regarding this. Also being in Pune, it'll be
quite easy for me also to travel to Goa.

I'd really like to get back to the movement with as much enthusiasm I had
before. So I'd love to help out regarding this one.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikipedia Kolkata Meetup 10 Report

2012-07-10 Thread Debanjan Bandyopadhyay
Dear all,

Firstly let me begin with tons and tons of apologies as I am terribly late
with this report and in no way can I justify being such late.
Unfortunately, due to various reasons primarily studies and traveling, I
could not come out with this faster.

Wikipedians in Kolkata met for the 10th time at Atmabikash Samiti on the
19th of Hamy, 2012. There was a large number of members upto at least 10
people, my memory is a bit clouded now. Incidentally, being a bengali and
well as being born and brought up in Kolkata, this was my first meetup with
the Kolkata community. I had just met Jayanta da at WikiConference 11 where
we shared our stories of Wikipedia.

To be honest, it was one of the warmest welcomes I've received. The meetup
started with informal introductions, as I knew none and other than Jayanta
da, none knew me. I told them my story of IEP student to Campus Ambassador
to editor and promoter of the Wikimedia movement, while they each told me
theirs. The date on which it was held, 19th May, was also special, which
was unknown to many of us and this was highlighted by guest of honour, Dr.
Mohit K Ray, who has a Ph D in Engineering and is an Environmental
Consultant.

We all know about 21st February
which started the Bengali
Language Movement ,
now celebrated as International Mother Language Day. However, it is unknown
to most of us that an event of equivalent importance occurred on the 19th
of May also in our country. The event which was not initially on Wikipedia
and has now been added reads, "1961 –
11 bengali martyrs gave up their life in a police firing in
SilcharRailway Station,
Assam , while demanding state
recognition of bengali language in the Bengali Language
Movement."
Dr. Ray highlighted how little is know about such an event within our own
country. He also discussed the growing separation in linguistic differences
between the bengali language spoken by Indians, (i.e. West Bengali) and the
bengali language spoken by Bangladesh.

He also cited how the history of Bengali language is bifurcating into two
streams based on these differences. However, after and intense discussion
as to what then should be the future of Wikipedia, Jayanta da pointed out
that till date, other than a few spelling disputes, there have not been too
many arguments between Indian (Bengali) Wikipedians and Bangladeshi
Wikipedians regarding Bengali Wikipedia. In fact the collaboration that
both countries enjoy is unique in its own in that the two countries are
united by bengali wikipedia sharing common goals and interests.

Other than this pivotal topic, other topics discussed brought forward by
both Jayanta da, Kalyan da, myself as well as everyone present were:
1. How Bengali Wikipedia is increasing day by day.
2. How it the need of the hour is to increase Indian editors in Bengali
Wikipedia as Jayanta da pointed out in WCI 11, (95% contribs are from
Bangladesh).
3. How to engage various institutes and libraries into putting content into
Wikipedia.
4. How to engage the already interested youth of West Bengal into editing
Wikipedia. (As in previous instances, they have already showed a lot of
energy and interest).
5. How to better conduct meetups, and spread the news about the meetups.

However, each of these topics required vast discussions and as such, it was
decided to put these on the agenda list for the next meetup. We all shared
a cup of tea and the meeting was put to a close.

I've tried to keep this report as short and simple as possible. My
experience with the Kolkata community was truly wonderful and am proud to
be part of such a bunch of warm loving individuals who accepted me into
their inner circle without having to jump too many hoops. I hope I can keep
on contributing to their efforts in every which way I can in the future.
Wish the Kolkata community all the best for the next discussion.

Just a few points of observation (my two paisa):
1. The discussions need more control and organization. Most of us generally
started on the same topic but the discussion kept on spiraling to a whole
bunch of different topics which Kalyan da kept on mentioning.
2. Due to the absence of a laptop, we could not do any online editing.
Though this was the result of confusion, maybe we could have a rotating
system of who brings the laptop in time.
3. We need to plan more frequent meetups so that as a community we can
function better.
4. If possible have online editing sessions, because as a community only a
handful of the people were really experienced with editing, most of the
people present were very new with just a few edits clocked in. If we want
to be taken seriously, everyone must edit and build up their own
experience, otherwise we will never figure ou

to contact them and ask whether they are willing...I mean, do they hold the
copyright esp to photos of buildings also that are over 60 years old (the
photos not the buildings).

[Wikimediaindia-l] Rare Book Society of India

2012-05-16 Thread Debanjan Bandyopadhyay
Hi all,

I just saw this
page[1]
on facebook, it supposedly belongs to the Rare Book Society of India
and they have a lot of old images, older than 60 years. Hence, do you think
these can be uploaded to Wikipedia and maybe we can ask them whether they
themselves would like to do as such. If am not wrong, maybe the GLAM team
would know more about this?

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Vodafone advertisement -- Internet is fun, Wikipedia

2012-05-15 Thread Debanjan Bandyopadhyay
Don't know about free, but their detailed
ad[1]
mentions two things beneficial to our cause...Seems all this much
outreach is finally working...

1. Access more than 21 million articles in 285 languages - Hope people now
realise Wikipedia is more than just English Wikipedia.
2. Create and edit your own articles. - Don't know how risky the statement
is but the fact that Wikipedia can be edited is now widespread. I just hope
people don't think Vodafone lets you edit Wikipedia and that otherwise
Wikipedia can't be edited.

Dhaval,

I meant no offence in anyway, I was pointing out the same, that using a
particular browser is upto them, its there choice and this meant not only
you but like Srikanth pointed out 4% of users. I just asked it you could
edit temporarily while the bug was being fixed. The question was whether or
not the bug should be fixed, the question was, whether it would deter your
contributions. But I hope the issue is resolved now as Srikanth pointed
out. Happy editing. :)

2012-05-11 Thread Debanjan Bandyopadhyay
Hi Dhaval,

Am just curious, being from the non-technical field and all. If there is a
problem with respect to IE7, should the problem lie with Microsoft? I mean,
can the bug be fixed? I mean no offense and if the bug can be fixed, it
should be done, everyone has their browser preferences that they are
comfortable with and am sure Arun meant it as a joke. But if the bug is not
fixed and the update is applied, would it be possible for you to
temporarily shift to another browser till the bug is fixed, since it is
already filed?

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Ads Injected into Wikipedia?

2012-05-07 Thread Debanjan Bandyopadhyay
Hmmm...that maybe true but what else can we do, I mean, Inkfruit has to be
involved somewhere in this right? Think about it, if you were an ad
injecting virus, why would you randomly inject ads that too of inkfruit?
For people who face these ads, are the ads appearing only on wikipedia or
other websites also? If I am not wrong, if this is the work of a malware,
it would display the ad on each and every website you visit and not just
specifically Wikipedia. If its only Wikipedia and the ad is only Inkfruit,
I'd really say, if nothing can be done via code, legal needs to be
involved. If its a non-specific malware, just clean your systems, I guess
and inform others.

Rather, I'd say, instead of not going public with this, if it gets too
frequent, go public. Display a banner on top of Wiki stating that if you
see ads on Wikipedia that is not at all related to Wiki, rather you should
check your system for malware. The point is people should not assume, that
Wikipedia has started ads.

I am extremely sorry that this report is long overdue but as I was busy
with my exams and other stuff, I literally did not get time to compile
this. This is related to the Wikipedia Stall I helped set up in Netaji
Subhash Engineering College, Kolkata. NSEC had their annual
techno-management fest, Avenir, 2012 from 16th - 18th March, around the
time I got back to Kolkata from Pune during my prep leave. As there was
already a WikiAcademy, in NSEC, I tried to procure a lab for an editothon,
however, Sucheta who awesomely spearheaded everything for me from her
college part informed me that labs were not available, however, a stall was.

I sent out to set up the stall for the three day fest. I contacted the
local community as well as the India Programs team as this was my first
ever Outreach that I organized. I sent a mail on both the India mailing
list as well as the West Bengal mailing list. Unfortunately, there was a
lack of volunteers as almost everyone was busy. On day 1, Sucheta
accompanied me at the stall for the whole day, however, on Day 2 even she
was busy with her own fest work.

Also Day 1 saw much better numbers that Day 2 and as I was not available on
Day 3, Day 3 was dropped completely. The pros and the cons are as follows:

The Cons:
1. There was serious lack of volunteers and hence at times I felt very
overburdened having to deal with over 10 people at one go.
2. Lack of banners/posters - Though this might not be a big issue but as
there was no large poster available. It was very difficult to inform people
about the stall. I tried my best with A4 documents I printed myself, but
the problem still remained because of the size.
3. Lack of numbers - Perhaps this might be my take, but am used to fests in
the Pune/Mumbai circuit and hence the numbers to me, seemed very less,
although I was informed this was the largest turnout, even more than last
year. Still on Day 1, about 30 people at most visited the stall. On Day 2,
the number was far less.

The Pros:
1. I was highly impressed with the amount in interest in Kolkata. The
students were not only highly interested, they had an array of curious
questions.
2. Certain students even waited for me to finish with others so that they
could get a deeper understanding of Wikipedia and even do some hands on.
3. Two students were so interested, they were coming back again and again
and I even helped them upload pics to their user profile.
4. One student, User:Sanu531 1 first
tried a live edit uploaded his own pic and updated his user page himself.

In my opinion, if there is this level of interest, I think, a student club
of types could do wonders here. I did not create any page on WMIN as this
was only a stall, however, I did upload pics
here
2. Also as there was no flier/handout available for such I tried to make a
very rookie version in both Bengali and English back to back in one page,
here 3.

Special thanks to Nitika Tandon for the Presentations which enabled me to
create the poster as well as the whole of India Teams for the support as
well as both the India and Bengali Community for the encouragement.

[Wikimediaindia-l] [Wikimediaindia-I] {{WM-IN}} Invitation template

2012-03-20 Thread Debanjan Bandyopadhyay
Hey all,

I was thinking maybe we can change the current invitation template code to
this one, User:Debastein/WP:India
Invite.
Basically, this would enable any user to give a custom message and sign
easily using the *{{WM-IN|message= |sign=}}* functions.

Also this would recognize the user name in the talk page and automatically
input it.

If we use this code, then even if someone uses the normal code,
{{WM-IN}}it would
recognize the user and leave the current default message just like
the current template and you can enter your signature afterwards, like it
is now.

What say? opinions? This one seems a bit more friendly to me.

I am currently trying to make a basic info guide which I can xerox and

[Wikimediaindia-l] NSEB tech fest Avenir

2012-03-15 Thread Debanjan Bandyopadhyay
Hello all,

I am currently in Kolkata, and upon reaching here two days ago, a fellow
community member, Sucheta, had informed me that her college, Netaji Subhash
Engineer College, Garia was organizing a tech fest, Avenir
2012from 16th of March to the 18th of March.
As such I got in touch with her
college organizers and with Sucheta's help we were able to procure a stall
for free. We might even get a hall if possible.

I really wanted the lab for an edit-o-thon but that is very hard to
procure. I also relayed the message to both Jayanta da as well as WMF
office in Delhi as they had organized an academy in the same college.

We really need volunteers for the event, so anyone who can give their
precious time please do join us. It would be awesome if all you guys came.
I'd really love to meet the Kolkata community also.

What I was planning was that, we concentrate more on uploading pics on
commons, pronunciation drive (i.e. easier ways to contribute than writing
articles) because young people in fests will hopefully respond better to
such stuff. Also wanted to spread the word about WP:India and Indic
languages. I need a lot of help so would really appreciate any volunteers.
Can reward with cupcakes (virtual of course). :)

Please guys, whoever, can, do attend, this will be Kolkata's first outreach
in a fest, if I am not wrong, if its not, then doesn't matter, it will be
an outreach in Kolkata and all of us really need to know what's the right
formula and practice makes you perfect they say. :)

Will create a page about this in en:Wiki and WM-IN soon. See you tomorrow
guys, sharp at 10 am (hopefully). :)

No, now that you mention him, even a friend of mine in Pune told me that
Wikipedia had started ads, to which I dared him to show me and in fact made
a bet. He failed to show me when I asked him to, so I took it as a singular
even, perhaps, some sort of mistake he made. However, since other people

[Wikimediaindia-l] An Innovative Outreach effort

2012-03-09 Thread Debanjan Bandyopadhyay
Hello all,

I am sending this mail, as I am soon going to be leaving for Kolkata and as
such a particular incident reminded me how we can do a free of cost basic
outreach, to spread the word about Wikipedia. The incident occurred when I
was traveling from Mumbai to Kolkata, just after the conference, and not
having time to change, I boarded the Duronto with my conference t-shirt on.

The passengers in the compartment I was in, though initially kept to
themselves, started speaking to each other as often happens on long (28hr)
train journeys. Very soon the focus shifted to my t-shirt and the resultant
was that I ended up explaining the world of Wikipedia to them for hours.

I should mention, it was a very varied crowd and maybe that is why it
happened. There was a lawyer, a psychiatrist, a scientist, an engineer, and
a couple others whose occupations were unknown to me.

I won't say it was very fruitful, or that I showed them any live demo or
ppt. Rather I focused on a few crucial question which were on their minds:

   - What is Wikipedia?
   - Who runs Wikipedia?
   - Is Wikimedia a sub-project of Wikipedia?
   - Who edits Wikipedia?
   - How many employees are there and how many volunteers?
   - Is it really free? If so, how does it earn money?
   - Reliability of Wikipedia - If anyone can edit, is it reliable?
   - Who monitors info?
   - Copyvio and reliable sources
   - What do I get out of it, if not money?
   - Role of a Campus Ambassador
   - How to edit?
   - Why edit?
   - Edit what?
   - Presence of Indic language wikis
   - How to edit Indic language wikis
   - Sister projects like Commons, Wikibooks
   - Entry of Foundation in India and creation of India Chapter

However, as it was my first journey, I did not note down their emails to
follow them up. The number was also limited, only 6. But hey, it was free
and killed a lot of time, while at least telling people that Wikipedia can
be edited and it has indic languages as well as sister projects. Hence, a
sincere request to all Wikimedians. If you are traveling in a long distance
train journey, try wearing a Wiki t-shirt if you have one. If you don't but
the audience seems interested go over, say hello and ask where they work.
When they ask you back, say, "WIKIPEDIA" and see the reaction. That should
get you started.

You can always try it. If it fails, then the only thing is you have to wash
your Wiki tee at most. But at least you spread the awareness. I am not
saying that this will retain people and inspire them to start editing, but
at least they might go back and try and look at Wikipedia in a different
way, or seek out new info.

Am again going to wear a Wiki tee on my journey, will tell you if i have a
similar experience.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Outreach opportunities: Wikipedia workshops at tech fests

2012-01-20 Thread Debanjan Bandyopadhyay
My two paise:

Point 1: I myself am a student, and I kind of agree with Srikanth on this
one. Students aren't really interested in learning to edit Wikipedia at a
fest. If I was a newbie, I wouldn't even look at the stall for more than
say once or twice.

A better idea is to have a photo scavenger hunt to upload to commons and
use that somehow in an article in one of these fest. Anyone who can do it
successfully after a brief tutorial, say gets rewarded with a tshirt.

The t-shirt isn't that symbolic. It is necessary to attract a person to the
stall, but what will drive them is the competitive spirit.

Point 2: I do believe that Wikipedia has a lot of techies (my opinion, may
be wrong). When you target techies, they are the easiest as they will like
the concept of open source, coding, etc etc. But I doubt how many
non-technical articles they chose to even touch in a short span.

What we do not touch upon are non-tech fests, esp sciences and arts.
Because, students of sciences generally have to do a lot of research but
all this research just goes to their professors and rots. While literature
students are always looking for avenues of self expression. Maybe Wikipedia
is not the best place for that, but it will attract them more because of
the audience. So why not give non-tech fests a try also?

The most recent I can think of is Sympulse, which is in 9days. But Nitika
or Hisham, maybe you can talk to them and if they agree, we can also help
out?

Contact info:

Aditya Krishnamurthy : +91 9867559891

Aparna Prasad : +91 9673399903

Otherwise, I don't think you will get students to edit Wikipedia seriously
other than the IEP model.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wiki 11 Pune report

2012-01-19 Thread Debanjan Bandyopadhyay
+100

It was a lot of fun along with serious business. The club started on the
14th with over 40+ attendees. The greatest success was that almost 100% of
all students returned the next day. Hence, we hope to have generated a lot
of interest as well as made it clear to them, that editing an encyclopedia
is serious business.

If it relates to editing English Wikipedia, I can help monitor the
activities of the students online and provide help and support when they
need it. So that they don't end up with copyvios or vandalism.

Excuse me for commenting here, I am not a techie, hence I assume, it might
not be the best place for me to comment, but after so many discussion over
FOSS or not, (yes, I googled what is FOSS) and I just want to know, is this
discussion really necessary?

Is it really necessary to get into long drawn discussions as to whether it
is FOSS or not? I may be out of place, hence, please Assume Good Faith. I
just wanted to know the relevance.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Kolkata Bookfair 2012-Application submitted

2011-12-20 Thread Debanjan Bandyopadhyay
Hello all,

I'm really eagerly waiting news from the Kolkata Book fair. Excuse me for
my impatience, but the concept of such a large outreach in my home city is
just too enthralling for me to keep quiet.

What is the current situation? Are there any updates? Any news on the
contract with the Book Fair people? What's the word on WMF regarding
funding? How many volunteers are required? Does the Kolkata community have
adequate man-power? What about posters and freebies? Can any of the Campus
Ambassadors, including myself from the India Education Program provide any
assistance?

Sorry if there are too many questions, I'm just too excited. :)

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Death and Post-mortem of Indian Education Program pilot

2011-11-15 Thread Debanjan Bandyopadhyay
Hey Srikanth,

This is exactly what I meant about constructive approach. No my profs don't
come to me house. They fail me. I understand that this is a problem in the
mentality of Indian students. But you either have two options, decide to
help anyway or crib about how the mentality of students need to change.

Now let me ask you a question. When someone falls in a river, do you wait
for that person to ask you for your help or do you try to save him anyway.
I might be immature in my views, but when you have a whole bunch of new
Wikipedian's who would prefer to contact their CA's on facebook and not on
Wikipedia talk page, do you refuse to give them help or go to their talk
pages and help them out.

I say, everyone has their choices, I'd jump in the river to save the
person, you may want to sit and wait till he calls for your help. There are
no good or bad choices, its just a choice and its up to you as to what you
believe in.

May I also point the rhetoric of your statement, my prof doesn't come to my
house, I go to him, because I am afraid of him failing me? So do you want
the students to reach the OA's out of fear? In my experience, when I went
and helped out a person, even when they didn't want my help, it turned out
that I became more easily approachable and they came to me later with more
issues.

I'd say, this is India, our problems are unique and hence so should be our
solutions. Cribbing will get us nowhere. I can say for sure, if you go to
100 students and check out their contribs, at least 20 will reply back and
thank you and ask for your help the next time. But if you sit and wait for

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Death and Post-mortem of Indian Education Program pilot

2011-11-15 Thread Debanjan Bandyopadhyay
Hey all,

Let me introduce myself first. I too am a CA in fact a second gen one. I
initially decided not to reply to this mail stream at all as there is
nothing but a blame game going on.

But after all the personal attacks, I've decided to be on the front-line
along with my CA family. Ok, firstly, I don't really get this issue of the
Indian Community not being aware. I mean, yes, you can blame Hisham for not
enrolling the community but as the copyvios started flooding and the
students started editing, we hardly saw anyone from the Indian Community.
Even the Global community was unaware, but they sought out the information
and made their presence felt such that they demanded information.

The Indian community however, still expects that students will come to them
for help and they shall help. I remember attending the meeting last month.
I was very excited as I was new to Wikipedia India community, Pune chapter.
But am sorry to say, saying that the meeting was fruitful would be nothing
but a vast exaggeration. I mean, we explained to the community as to how we
and our Indian culture and education system were suffering personal attacks
and we really needed assistance in replying back to them, but all the
community was interested in was going to the students why they should not
do copyvio which, we had already given tons of sessions for.

In fact, the mere suggestion of Ram to create custom welcome templates for
the students was only agreed upon in theory and never came to life.
Unfortunately, attacking the CA's on their edit count is a way, in which
you can belittle their efforts, blame it on everyone else and just show how
right you are.

The very aspect as to how this whole discussion is turning into only a
blame game shows the fragmentation of the Indian community to which I feel
to be a part of also.

As for OA's, I'm sorry but I can speak for myself to state I received zero
help from my assigned OA's. I tried a lot on my part to reach out and get
help but I had to man 100+ students * 2 subjects all on my own as my fellow
CA also left my side. The active CA's were a big support, like Ram and a
few others.

What is not visible in Wikipedia is the amount of hard work we CA's put in
physically. I spent time every day teaching 100 students individually how
to create a sandbox, my edit count does not show that contribution, I am
sorry to say. I spent day and night searching for copyvios. Its only
because of us CA's that the extent of copyvios was scaled to a lesser
extent before the emergency OA's came in.

As for that Brazilian CA, he has been there since 2007, so I don't really
get how you can compare him to Ram. The funniest thing however that I find
is the name of the email chain, death and post mortem?? I mean, firstly,
the IEP is not dead. Being the CA of SSE, I can say for certain, it was
successfully implemented in SSE. I'd say at least 20 students are now
permanent Wikipedians who might have done copyvio, but rectified and came
back strong.

I hate this blame game of Nitika and Hisham as well as the other CA's. I am
sorry to say, I had no help from the Indian community. All that I know
about detecting copyvio was taught to me by Kudpung and Moonriddengirl, the
rest I learnt along the way. Kudpung too was not expected to teach me, but
he still did, and that is what I call as the true spirit of a Wikipedian,
imparting knowledge.

Having a huge number of edits may make you well known to the community at
large but for a bunch of students who have just started and don't even know
how to check an edit count, its useless knowledge to them. They will hardly
reach out to OA's. Most of the queries I got were not on my talk page but
via phone calls and in person chat. I carried my laptop around showing
anyone and everyone who wanted to know what to do.

We accept the mistakes we made but this blame game has to stop. What is the
point of it all?? Form a constructive platform in moving forward not step
back and say, "I told you so". That's just childish and immature.

As for the rampant voices who judge our experience, I welcome you to come
to the colleges, deal with over 1000+ students and see how your words can
totally inspire them to create non-copyright articles. Please, it will be a
learning experience for me. Ask Srikeit, I invited him once, only about 16
people attended. The rest 80+ in SSE, asked me face to face at a later
time. Would any of you be willing to spend so much time answering their
queries from 9am to 2am?? I'd love to get that kind of support and give the
students a few of your numbers.

Calculate that into my edit count please and am sure, I won't fair that
badly.
