[Wikimediaindia-l] Code of Conduct and Friendly Space Policy for WCI 2016

2016-07-16 Thread Rohini Lakshané
The Code of Conduct and Friendly Space Policy for WikiConference India are
now closed for comments.

The final version is available at:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiConference_India_2016/Code_of_Conduct

We request all participants and members of the organising teams to
familiarise themselves with the CoC and policy. This code of conduct
applies to the main event, pre-conference and post-conference events,
auxiliary tracks to the main event such as fireside chats, and online
components of the conference such as video conferences, IRC rooms, and
mailing lists.

We also urgently need help with translating the document into different
Indian languages before the start of WikiConference India.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] A certain Jayantilal Kothari on this list

2015-04-18 Thread Rohini Lakshané
I agree with Srikanth, and urge the moderators to enforce a policy to deal
with ad homimen attacks on this list.

Kothari's problem seems to be with Srikanth's (and other former EC
members') past actions and not with the suggestions and comments Srikanth
has made about Wiki Loves Food. Bringing up a bona fide member's real or
perceived bad karma from the past only derails the conversation and does
not nothing constructive for the community.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Women's Day events and WikiWomen's History Month, 2014

2014-02-14 Thread Rohini Lakshané
The project page for coordinating online and offline events for
International Women's Day (March 8) and Women's History Month has been
published on Meta at:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Women%27s_History_Month,_India-2014

I urge Indian language editors to add lists of articles to create and
expand as a part of the edit-a-thon:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Women%27s_History_Month,_India-2014/To_do_list

The theme of the edit-a-thon this year on the English Wikipedia is Women
Parliamentarians. The articles listed for creation, expansion and
improvement as a part of the Lilavati's Daughters edit-a-thon on women
scientists could be taken up again during Women's History Month.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikipedia edit-a-thon on Dec 7-8 in Delhi for articles on violence against women

2013-12-04 Thread Rohini Lakshané
Breakthrough, a global human rights organisation that runs campaigns such
as Bell Bajao, and Wikimedia Chapter (India) are conducting a Wikipedia
edit-a-thon in Delhi on December 7 and 8 for editing articles pertaining to
violence against women. Facebook page of the event:
http://www.facebook.com/events/181325168737101

*Basic idea behind this session*: A crucial problem with several Wikipedia
articles on sexual violence, especially in the Indian context, is that
often there are no articles or that articles have been deleted). It would
be a knowledge advocacy session to increase gender sensitive editing in
Wikipedia.

The session will involve editing of articles pertaining to various aspects
of violence against women in India. A list of about 10 Wikipedia articles
has been drawn up for editing. The session will be live-blogged. Remote
participation will be enabled through IRC channels.

The edit-a-thon is a part of the "16 days of activism against gender based
violence" starting 25th November (International Day for the Elimination of
Violence against Women) to 10 December (International Human Rights Day).
This is a global campaign that aims at raising awareness about gender-based
violence as a human rights issue. This hackathon will be mainly focussed
towards data visualisation and several organisations are providing us with
statistical datasets and other kinds of data including audio and video.

2013-08-22 Thread Rohini Lakshané
Hello everyone,

I am taking a straw poll to know if any women in Mumbai, who already edit
Wikipedia are interested in attending an advanced level editing workshop.
If you are, please get in touch with me offlist. You could have
participated in a previous, basic editing workshop or learnt the ropes by
yourself.

In case you know anyone who fits the bill, but isn't likely to be
subscribed to this mailing list, please share this email with her.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikipedia editing session for journalism students at Sophia College, Mumbai

2013-08-01 Thread Rohini Lakshané
This is an unedited report of the lecture-cum-demo written by one of the
students who attended it.

*Wikipedia: Democratic Ritual of Knowledge Transfer *

What can I say about Wikipedia? Ok, let me ask, can you imagine a world
without Wikipedia? I always wonder who wrote, reviewed, edited, curated and
moderated 30 million articles in 286 languages. Answer is you and me and us!

Wikipedia, world’s largest and the most referenced work on Internet, has
been ranked at seventh position globally on Alexa as of June 2013. It has,
estimated, 365 million readers worldwide. Though numbers are impressive
enough to boggle one’s mind, what truly electrifies the spinal cord is the
way Wikipedia functions. Anyone from any corner of the world (Now, you can
ask if earth is round or square? Go to Wikipedia, you will get interlinked
references from Heliocentricism to Geocentrism, from Copernicus to Galileo,
from Copernican Revolution to Renaissance, and thus traverse the complete
circle of knowledge!) can write an article. Then some other volunteers keep
the wheel rolling by editing and validating the existing article and by
adding required citation, views and counterviews. This invisible
chain-reaction keeps flourishing Wikipedia just like an unnoticed food
chain of natural ecosystem.

On Saturday, 13th July 2013, workshop on Wikipedia was organized by
volunteers of Wikimedia Foundation, in association with SCM, Sophia
Polytechnic, Mumbai. The workshop was conducted by Bishakha Datta and
Rohini Lakshane from Wikimedia Foundation, Mumbai. After giving the brief
on history of Wikipedia, how Wikipedia functions and how one can become a
part of this knowledge thriving community, instructors and volunteers
facilitated SCM students to create articles on Wikipedia. SCM students
successfully created two articles on Dina Vakil, the first woman resident
editor of The Times of India's
Bombay edition and Ritu Menon, the co-founder, writer and publisher of
India's first feminist publishing house, *Kali for
Women*.
The workshop truly helped students to realize that how the power of
technology, information and collaborative effort can drive people towards
the informed and knowledge-intensive society.

After attending the workshop I couldn’t stop myself and posted the
following note dedicated to my all friends:

· Do you think 30 million articles in 286 languages is too loud a
figure? If you are sceptical, then that’s great. Go and investigate
further. Provide the correct figure (if the given figure is erroneous) and
yeah provide the reference/citation as well.

Bingo! That’s how the whole Wikipedia has been erected, by sharing and
contributing knowledge. Contribute about your locality, personalities,
culture, tradition, etc.

· Believe in good faith. Knowledge is a path not the signboard. Be
in good faith, put information, views and counter-views with reference, and
don’t be judgmental. Neutrality is the nature of Wikipedia.

· Acknowledge the effort. Not only when you write a research paper
or contribute to Wikipedia, but also when you receive help, love and care
of someone, do acknowledge. Democracy cannot exist without thankfulness and
compassion. Wikipedia is truly democratic way of knowledge transfer - for
the people, of the people, by the people.

- Parth Vyas (22nd July 2013, Mumbai)

[Wikimediaindia-l] Women's Day events in India, March 8

2013-03-04 Thread Rohini Lakshané
A few online and offline events are being conducted in on the occasion of
International Women's Day on March 8. The events continue thereafter too as
March has been declared as Women's History Month.

There is a Wikipedia editing workshop in Goa on March 8 at Nirmala
Institute of Education from 3 pm to 5 pm. It is followed by an offline and
online editathon.
The online editathon is a month-long affair, which will be held every
weekend starting with the weekend after March 8. Details here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/International_Women%27s_Day,_India

The goal of the month-long event is to encourage more women to contribute
to Wikipedia and increase representation of articles related to women in
Wikipedia. The event aims at creating new articles, expanding the existing
stubs and translating English articles to various Indian languages.

Members are requested to start edithons in regional language Wikipedias.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] why to donate

2013-02-14 Thread Rohini Lakshané
Abhishek,

I have been on-board several Wiki mailing lists and closed emailing groups
for a few years now, but this is the first time I have been piqued to
respond to such a 'discussion'. Your efforts to prove what you are trying
to prove are outstanding. I won't be surprised if Doctor Hakim (I
appreciate the wordplay) is a troll or a sock puppet who has planted this
thread to get the discussion where it is.

Almost every community member I have interacted with or met in person over
the years has gone out of pocket for volunteer activities. I have known of
community members refusing grants while going out of pocket, and I respect
them all the more for that. Some of us have spent astounding amounts of
money this way. As I see it, the Chapter has committed to transparency and
accountability; nothing is wrong with it having some money of its own. When
you become a member of the Chapter again, maybe you can help bring about as
much transparency as you'd like.

Rohini

I spotted it in conjunction with an article published recently (Wikipedia
doesn't need your money - so why does it keep pestering
you?<http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/12/20/cash_rich_wikipedia_chugging>)
and ended up assuming both belonged to the same time frame. This one
suggests that WMF fundraisers put out incomplete and misleading
information. I was just wondering what the community's thoughts about these
matters were.

Also, found a recent discussion on the same topic on Quora: Is Wikipedia
