The open source Tesseract has not matured so far to OCR Indic Text. It
works well with only english.

Connecting with Google OCR is the only way we have to get a better OCR.

You read my mind mate. I was thinking the same thing, if it could be
integrated into Tesseract.  Sadly, haven't had time to play around
with it and now your saying it's using Google's OCR bits is sadder.

I do remember though, that about a year or two ago, there were some
negotiations being held between wikimedia and Google to foss some of
the unicode bits from Google. I don't remember the entire conversation
but do recall there was some talk of Google using the Apache License
or something.

If you know what I'm talking about, please share.

Drive is certainly proprietary. I'm not sure Shrini's tool can work for any
FOSS OCR like Tesseract.

under GNU/Linux it might be a good tool for unicode OCR usage in

Thanks Santosh for this great effort. But I would like to request you and
future hackathon co-ordinator, please share your plan before hackathon at
proper mailing list or create a fabricator project for hackathon. [1] [2]
[3].  Otherwise most of the community member not aware that what you were
planning to resolve. Are those above application  most needed wishlist from
Indic community? Are there any documents/discussion?

application, which is useful to all community.

*1)* *WikiSpeak with native language :* (Hindi) (*Web Application* + *Android
Mobile application*).
*2)* *Edit Tamil Wiktionary **(Tamil community request)** :* - (*Android
application*)
*3)* *Audio file upload to WikiData (Punjabi community request) :* (*Android
