Re: [Wikimediauk-l] UK censorship: I'm on BBC Radio 4 Today show tomorrow 8:20am

2008-12-08 Thread jonathan cardy
I agree that David did well, but I wonder whether we are fighting the right
battle. I wouldn't want to defend that image as being nude but not erotic.

Amazon don't seem to have the image up - I've just searched for scorpion
killers and got half a dozen hits, a couple with a photo of the band and the
rest with "no image available".

See:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_m_h_?url=search-alias%3Dpopular&field-keywords=scorpions+killers&x=15&y=16

Would be better off replacing the photo of a naked 10 year old girl with the
image of the band?

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] AGM - large number of online participants

2008-12-14 Thread jonathan cardy
Meetings with a large number of online or teleconferencing participants are
practical, provided those in the aether are receiving but not sending (except
maybe one at a time - for example Email the chair in advance if you want to
pose a question and have the chair dial you in when your slot comes up).

to attend! - June 22-23, Budapest

[please pardon this crossposting]

Hello everyone!

I am pleased to announce the first Program Evaluation and Design Workshop!

   - *When*: 22–23 June 2013
   - *Where*: Budapest, Hungary

The application process is now open. We have only 20 slots available for
this workshop and the application deadline ends on May 17th. This two-day
event will be followed by a pre-conference workshop at Wikimania 2013.
Ideally, applicants would commit to attending both events.

*Why are we offering this workshop?* Over the next couple of years, the
Wikimedia Foundation will be building capacity among program leaders around
evaluation and program design. A better understanding of how to increase
impact through better planning, execution and evaluation of programs &
activities will help us to move a step closer to achieving our mission of
offering a free, high quality encyclopedia to our readers around the world.

*What will take place at this and the following workshops?* Our long-term
goals are:

   1. Participants gain a basic shared understanding of program evaluation
   2. Participants will work collaboratively to map and prioritize
measurable outcomes, beginning with a focus on the most common program &
   activities
   3. Participants will gain increased fluency in common language of
evaluation (i.e. goals versus objectives, inputs & outputs versus outcomes
   & impact)
   4. Participants will learn and practice how to extract and report data
   using the UserMetrics API
   5. Participants will commit to working as a community of evaluation
leaders who will implement evaluation strategies in their programmatic
activities and report back at the pre-conference workshop at Wikimania 2013
   6. …and participants will have a lot of fun and enjoy networking with
   other program leaders!

We will publish a detailed agenda for the event in Budapest soon on meta.

*Which programs & activities are we going to focus on?* During the workshop
in Budapest, we will only have a limited amount of time. Therefore, we will
be focusing on the some of the more common programs & activities:

   - *Wikipedia editing workshops* where participants learn how to or
actively edit (i.e. edit-a-thon, wikiparty, hands-on Wikipedia workshop)
   - *Content donations* through partnerships with GLAMs & related
   organizations
   - *Wiki Takes/Expeditions* where volunteers participate in day/weekend
events to photograph site specific content
   - *Wiki Loves Monuments* which takes place in September
   - *Education program/classroom editing* where volunteers support
educators who have students editing Wikipedia in the classroom
   - *Writing competitions* which generally take place online in the form
of contests, WikiCup, and challenges – often engaging experienced editors
   to improve content.

*Who should apply?* Community members who play an *active role* in
planning and executing programs & activities as described above in the
Wikimedia community. Your experience and knowledge will make this workshop
a success!

*What about the costs for travel and accommodation?* Hotels, flights and
other transportation costs will be on your chapter; the Wikimedia
Foundation will provide the venue, handouts, breakfasts and light lunches,
and a dinner for all participants on Saturday. If you're not affiliated
with a chapter and cannot afford to attend the event, please send me a
private email – we have a small amount of money set aside for those cases.

Applications are open until May 17. You can apply via this Google
Form<https://docs.google.com/a/wikimedia.org/forms/d/

[Wikimediauk-l] Do you have some spare time on the 2nd and or 3rd July?

2013-06-25 Thread Jonathan Cardy
The collections trust have very kindly offered us a free stand at their
exhibition on the 2nd/3rd of July 2013. This is a great opportunity for us
to talk to attendees at OpenCulture2013 <http://www.openculture2013.org.uk>,
hopefully these will be people who are committed to the idea of free
culture, but they may need someone who can tell them what Wikipedia can do
with mass releases of images. Or indeed just show them how to edit an
article or add an image to an article.

We still have a couple of places for volunteers to man the stand,
preference given to people who can talk about Wikimedia commons or wikidata
as well as Wikipedia.

Sign up here <http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/OpenCulture2013>, or by emailing
me.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Where should the Wikimedia UK Board meet over the coming year?

2013-07-15 Thread Jonathan Cardy
York would be good. We have an editathon there on the 19th
October.

We also have Autumn events in Glasgow and Manchester. More details on

the events page. For 2014 if you can
pencil in dates I can try and get edtathons on those dates.

[Wikimediauk-l] GLAM Committee

2013-07-30 Thread Jonathan Cardy
Dear all,

I'd like to revive the UK GLAM committee, much like the Education committee
the GLAM committee will be an opportunity for for volunteers to get more
involved in our GLAM program. I'm hoping that committee members will
include those willing to take part in interviewing potential Wikipedians in
Residence, taking part in editathons and maybe even writing them up as
blogs.

If any of that sounds interesting then please drop me an email.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Wikimania 2014: On journalism

2013-08-20 Thread Jonathan Cardy
Brian,

The obvious opportunity would be to take the fringe to the fringe. Every
Wikimania needs some events for the day after Wikimania, why not make one
option be to spend a few days at the fringe? I started the category
fringe <http://wikimania2014.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Fringe>on
the wikimania 2014 and am planning to do a free London museum trip for the
day after Wikimania. But we will need several options for Wikimanaians for
the 11th Aug onwards and it would be lovely if one could be the Edinburgh
fringe.

Hi Harry,

Do you think you could write a checklist/guide for organising such events?
That might make it more attractive for others to do this, and maybe prompt
some volunteers.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Can we nudge the Church of England for free images?

2013-09-03 Thread Jonathan Cardy
Having done a little bit of work on the image lists for WLM and quite a bit
of categorisation on commons I would add that in some counties they have
the majority of the grade I listed buildings.

So we should talk to the people who manage their physical estate, perhaps
after Wiki Loves Monuments.

FULL JOB AD:

Wikimedian in Residence
Temporary 6 month post
14.48 hours per week (2 days)
£23,400 per annum, pro rata

York Museums Trust's (YMT) Digital Team is embarking on a major
partnership project with Wikimedia UK to help improve online access to our

buildings and gardens to the widest possible audience

As part of a sixth-month project, we will be taking our Tempest

internationally acclaimed and globally used platform.

Do you have the skills and experience to provide access to our

[Wikimediauk-l] Digital Sustainability for Historians - event in London where it would be nice to have a scholar present with a Wikimedia theme to their offering

2013-09-17 Thread Jonathan Cardy
Would anyone on this list be interested in applying for this event? They
are offering a £350 honorarium, and if any Wikimedian wins I will be happy
to give what support I can.

I think that points 1, 4 and 5 would be ones where Wikimedia can be the
solution or at least a large part of it.

Point 2 is something we should steer away from and point 3 is something we
can indirectly address - sharing images on Wikimedia commons, and using a
Wikimedia Commons category as your master category for related images means
that you don't have the cost of maintaining a website and web presence in
the future.

Applications open for Five Solutions: Digital Sustainability for Historians
Five Solutions to What?

Historical scholarship is increasingly digital; and yet we do not have an
agreed form of best practices for ensuring that digital scholarship
lasts. *Five Solutions* is looking for five scholars able to outline a
solution to the
issues of sustainability now facing historians. This one day workshop asks
participants to give a 15 http://www.blogger.com/null minute presentation
outlining practical solutions to one of five challenges, with the resources
and expertise of an ordinary working historian in mind. These
presentations will form the basis for a one day workshop on practical
strategies for digital sustainability. The presentations can be based on
your own experience and ideas, or can be taken on as a research project. We
will work with all participants to ensure that the final presentations are
both technically workable and illustrated with the most appropriate
datasets.

Accepted participants will each receive a *£350 honorarium.**

 The Five Themes

The following five themes are designed to get you started, but if you have
other ideas, we’d love to hear about it. Each theme should be approached
with the ordinary working historian in mind.

 1. Preserving research data for the future
 2. Curating an enduring professional online persona
 3. Paying project costs after the money runs out
 4. Capturing and documenting the expertise of temporary staff
 5. Strategies for working together on larger projects

 Who Should Apply?

We’re looking for people with passion. Scholars old or young, university
students of any level, librarians, archivists, developers, designers,
system administrators, or anyone who considers themselves a historian at
heart. No specific qualifications or prior experience required - just an
interest in helping academia find solutions to organizational and
technological challenges facing the sustainability of our digital projects.

What do I have to do?

Figure out a solution, of course! Once you’ve come up with your solution,
you’ll share your work in two ways:

 1. A 15-minute presentation of your solution at a one-day conference
in London, UK on the *28th of November 2013 *at the Institute of Historical
Research.

 2. A 1500-2000 word peer-reviewed tutorial outlining your solution to
be published in the *spring of 2014* in the *Programming Historian 2 *and
distributed as part of ‘IHR Digital’.

All tutorials will be peer-reviewed and released under a Creative Commons
CC-BY license. Participants will have the full support of an editor at
the *Programming
Historian 2* who will provide guidance for writing an effective, practical
tutorial.

Evidence of previous work with technical writing or a willingness to
learn, as well as a strong command of the English language are a bonus.

 How do I apply?

 By *8 October 2013* send a two-page C.V. and a brief email to
adam.crym...@kcl.ac.uk (subject line: Five Solutions) addressing the
following questions:

 1. What theme would you like to tackle? (Use one of our suggestions or
come up

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] 'Illustrating Wikipedia brochure' - your thoughts?

2013-09-17 Thread Jonathan Cardy
Thanks all,

*Possible revised wording with examples from the borderline and less
repetition.
*
*
UK Freedom of panorama*

Under UK law, you can photograph, upload and share with the world a photo
of any 3d artifact such as a building or sculpture that is permanently
publicly displayed in the UK, even if the object is still under copyright.
But you need to check four things:
1 Is it permanently on display? Temporary exhibits such as on the fourth
plinth in Trafalgar square are not included, but the Angel of the North is.
2 When you took the photograph were you somewhere normally open to the
public? Inside a pub or museum is fine, where you work or were a guest
probably isn't.
3 Was it 3d not 2d? Buildings and sculpture are 3d, graffiti, paintings and
signs are 2d. So a photograph of stained glass illuminated by light shining
through it is 3d, but the same stained glass window reflecting your flash
at night is 2d and might still be under copyright.
4 Did you take the photo in the UK? Most other countries have stricter
rules.

[Wikimediauk-l] Downloading a category from commons

2013-10-15 Thread Jonathan Cardy
Dear all,

We need to do a couple of batch extracts from Wikimedia Commons including a
copy of the "Wiki takes Chester" photos. Is there anyone who could do this
for us or show us how?

The extract would be expected to fit on a memory stick, and we would supply
the memory stick. Needless to say the extract needs to comply with reuse
policy<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Reusing_content_outside_Wikimedia#Downloading>so
some metadata will also need extraction.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Amazon Tax avoidance

2013-11-21 Thread Jonathan Cardy
If the prize is a book token or equivalent to a certain value then you can
sort out the practicalities such as Amazon v Waterstones with the winner.
Naming the company at this stage is giving them publicity that we don't
need to give.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Amazon Tax avoidance

2013-11-27 Thread Jonathan Cardy
If we give people a choice then they might well choose Amazon vouchers, but
we can move immediately from promoting prizes as Amazon vouchers to
promoting them as gift vouchers. From my Direct Marketing days when I was
involved in running quite a few prize draws the major reason why people
would use a known brand for a prize was to make the existence of the prize
more credible. I would hope that we can assume that any prize draw which we
run is credible.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Chiltern Trains Wi-Fi blocks Wikimedia Commons

2014-01-15 Thread Jonathan Cardy
If their concern is bandwidth then I think I can understand a free WiFi
provider blocking "Photo Sharing, Visual Search Engines". I would hope that
anyone batch uploading their days photos to Commons would be considerate of
such Free Wifi, but to be honest doubt I would be. As for the issue of
photos on your laptop in a public space such as a train, I've often sat on
a train cropping, naming and reviewing photographs before uploading them
later, people do sometimes look and occasionally comment. But I figure
nobody will be offended at photographs of steam trains and Georgian
antiquities.

Love the idea of steam powered routers though.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Interested in a potential hook-up with a sci-fi film festival?

2014-03-19 Thread Jonathan Cardy
We have a page for this
on<https://wikimania2014.wikimedia.org/wiki/Science_Fiction_Worldcon_in_London._August_14_to_18,_2014>the
Wikimania website, I suggest people who are interested go there and
flesh that page out. The 14th to 18th August is very much part of the
fringe of Wikimania and there will be some Wikimanians still in London,
especially if there are SF fans coming.

The final planning of this would be an interesting topic for a 30 minute
slot <https://wikimania2014.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions>at Wikimania,
both for interested parties to meet each other, finalise plans for the con
and perhaps for other editors to add to the wishlist of recordings images
or just sit in on the planning of such an event.

The Film festival is so long after Wikimania that I would treat it as a
WMUK event outside of Wikimania

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Rights in church bell ringing

2014-03-19 Thread Jonathan Cardy
In some ways professionals are easier because they will have thought about
IP issues and have a contract which means you negotiate with their manager
rather than them individually. But on the downside they usually expect to
be paid.

I know that some bell ringers do get appearance fees, I used to have a mate
who did it as a side line.

There is also the issue of the composers rights, though of course some bell
ringing will involve tunes that are long out of copyright.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] [Wikimedia-l] Rating Wikimedia content (was Our next strategy plan-Paid editing)

2014-04-17 Thread Jonathan Cardy
For media files there are two things we already have, size of the file and
who created it.

Filesize doesn't guarantee quality, but there must be a size below which we
just have a blurry thumbnail.

Assessing the possible quality of images by looking at how many other
quality images have come from the same user is likely to be helpful.
Another image by someone who has had multiple featured pictures should be a
positive on any rating system.

We now have hundreds of thousands of images that are categorised as being
of various important objects such as listed buildings in the UK.

Other variables we could consider include the camera used, again a good
camera with the settings mucked up is likely to take a worse photograph
than a cheap camera in the hands of someone who knows how to coax the bet
out of it.

Several other things may or may not be possible, though if there isn't
already open sourced software that can do it it could be expensive to
create it: Technology exists out there that can compare different human
faces, so it should be possible to write software that classifies images as
blurred, washed out or poorly lit. Also we could have software that
identifies near duplicates and in some fashion threads similar images
behind the "best" one.

The AFT was always vulnerable to just creating extra work for the community
and diverting people from possibly improving articles to asking others to
fix them. But software could be written that encouraged rather than
undermined the SoFixIt culture of our heyday. If we had an app that invited
people to check "Is this still the best image to illustrate this Wikipedia
article?" Then we could feed it with articles where we believed we had more
images on commons than we were using, or where the same image had been used
for several years, or the image used was small or otherwise suspect, or
indeed where we didn't have an image. Leutha and I ran a couple of sessions
a year or so back showing donors how to add images to articles, and we
found that even people who were quite hesitant about editing were very
confident deciding which of several images could be used to illustrate an
article, even if they had never been to the village or river in question.
As well as improving articles and acting as a much needed new entrypoint
for editors, this could give us another metric on media quality - "one of x
images considered but not used to illustrate the article on that subject"
or indeed "image z was replaced in article x by image y" which should
usually mean that image y is higher "quality" than image z.

Some sort of weighted score that combines the above could be what we need,
though of course many of the criteria are subjective and scores could drop
over time as better media files are uploaded.

wiki, this mailing list is much better at making suggestions for
photos
that could be taken at that museum, and the mailing I did to Wiki Loves
Monuments participants has been more fruitful at recruiting photographers
who are going to go there. Including one who has assured me he will work
from that list.

I now have a number of requests to make of that museum covering everything
from lighting and moving the tanks around to having a ROV fly round in
their building. But as I have several photographers who have now taken a
third of the tickets, I think it would be best to wait until we can point
to some photos in use before I ask for what I suspect would be out of hours
access.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Wikimeets in the papers - worth publicising?

2014-09-22 Thread Jonathan Cardy
I started attending meetups because of a watchlist notice, and we get lots
of people every year who come to London meetups because of that notice. We
have also had some success in the past with inviting editors who we know
are in or near London.

As for donors, Fabian and I ran a couple of training events for donors in
the London area a couple of years ago. We got quite a few attendees as I
remember, and I think we invited donors to one of the backstage passes. I'm
not sure I would invite donors to meetups though, as I can see some
cultural differences. Meetups are a great opportunity for experienced
editor to share experiences and discuss things with fellow editors, things
like Wikipedia's tenth birthday party were a good opportunity to answer
questions about the project from donors. But while a meetup is a great
place for a five minute lesson on a tool like hotcat, or a 5 minute chat
about a specific problem, a noisy pub isn't a suitable venue for an hour
long training session for a new editor.

I've given up many an afternoon or evening to train other people, and I
might go for a beer afterwards. A London meetup is a more social event
where I and most of the others drink beer, and if I knew that I was going
to be spending my Sunday afternoon training then I would stick to coffee.
So I'd be happy to invite newish editors to meetups, but I prefer to have
some events where you can assume that everyone round the table has done
some editing.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Meetup Venues

2014-10-01 Thread Jonathan Cardy
If we are willing to pay a modest amount there are lots of venues that we
can have quite cheaply. But aside from not spending money, the advantage to
my mind of large pubs on their quiet days is that not having to arrange
anything with the venue means a lot less work for the event organiser.

Three other things I would add to Fabian's list, disability access, them
not minding if we stay on for several hours, sometimes with only one or two
people nursing beers, and separate bills or pay as you order. The pub we
use in London fits that criteria pretty well, though four minutes walk from
Holborn tube isn't the best connected place in London. My experience of
cafes is that they are less likely to tolerate a large group that is long
past the point of spending money, I also don't fancy trying to work out a
bill at the end, much better to have people purchase from the bar as they
order - different cafes seem to have differing systems for this and the one
Charles uses in Cambridge is great.

Stevie,

Anything truly quirky should make it to the mainpage on April Fools day,
check out this page for the history of what has been there for the last ten

My own favourite is Heavy Metal Ulmlaut, but the museum of bad Art is also
quite quirky.

[Wikimediauk-l] Calling for current and future xml users who would like to help GLAMs upload media to Commons

2014-10-22 Thread Jonathan Cardy
Dear all,

In order to use the GLAM wiki toolset and do mass uploads of media from
institutions such as museums we need their metadata to be in an appropriate
xml format.

So we are looking for volunteers who know or would be willing to learn xml
and are interested in helping museums do mass uploads to Commons.

A good understanding of the Commons category structure is also useful as
the idea is to format the xml in such a way as to enable the migration of
metadata.

If you'd like to get involved we'd like to hear from you whether or not you
already know xml as if there is sufficient interest we can organise an xml
training session.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Magna Carta

2014-11-05 Thread Jonathan Cardy
Dear Rod,

We did indeed have a resident at the British Library, and some ongoing
discussions and events with them, including an event last Friday. At the
moment we are focussed on some large image releases and a major tagging
exercise to identify old maps which will then be loaded on Commons.
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:British_Library/Mechanical_Curator_collection/map_tag_campaign>

But it would be worth thinking of further projects, though at least for
this month I'd like to focus what we are doing with BL on certain mass
uploads.

Do people think that Magna Carta would be a good subject for a Wiki
wednesday session - bringing few editors together on a Wednesday evening
in our office in London?

[Wikimediauk-l] You are invited to the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich

2015-03-09 Thread Jonathan Cardy
Dear all,

Wikimedia UK and the National Maritime Museum would like to invite you to
an editathon in Greenwich on the 15th April re the Board of Longitude. Our
partners at the NMM are supplying lunch and several experts on the subject
who want to improve Wikipedia's coverage of the search for longitude.

Experienced Wikipedia editors would be very welcome.

The registration page is at
https://donate.wikimedia.org.uk/civicrm/event/info?id=185&reset=1 the
project page which includes articles we hope to work on is here
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetups/UK/National_Maritime_Museum_April_2015>,
There is also a talkpage
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Meetups/UK/National_Maritime_Museum_April_2015>
which gives opportunities to ask questions to some experts from the museum.

Lunch will be provided by our partners the National Maritime Museum.

The National Maritime Museum is the world's largest maritime museum,
"filled with inspirational stories of exploration and endeavour at sea and
packed to the gunwales with intriguing objects and fascinating galleries".

The Board of Longitude were the administrators of a prize for the
development of accurate ways to determine longitude, and thereby the
sponsors of some major scientific and exploratory discoveries that had an
important impact on world history.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Outreach question

2015-03-17 Thread Jonathan Cardy
Hi Rexxs, I use my watchlist and my home pc gets watchlist messages
geotargetted to London and the south east. But I don't know what proportion
of other editors use their watchlist, or what proportion have an ip address
that we geocode to the right region. So yes I would suggest using talkpage
messages as well. But i have no knowledge as to the proportion of Scottish
editors whose IP geolocates to Scotland, and without knowing that you can't
know how effective this might be.

Then of course there is the separate argument that a personal note on your
talkpage is more, well personal.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Outreach question

2015-03-17 Thread Jonathan Cardy
Hi Rexx,

There are two types of geo targetted notice on wikis. Central notices such
as the ones used on the fundraiser and watchlist notices. Watchlist notices
only appear when you check your watchlist, central notices are served to
everyone who logs on. On EN wiki events are usually promoted by watchlist
notices.

Of course both work off the IP address and I don't know how many Scottish
editors use IPs that geolocate to a sassenach address.

There are also the editors who put in an hour or two a month and might not
see a watchlist notice if they didn't log in in the week it was up but
would get an email if someone put a note on their talkpage.

So for various reasons we can be pretty sure that talkpage messages will be
seen by many people who wouldn't see a watchlist message.

Regards

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] UK photography contest

2016-08-18 Thread Jonathan Cardy
Thanks Richard,

The original idea was to reuse this list for a photography competition, it has
already been used for some image finding exercises. That said last I looked
about a third had an image already on commons if you searched. I'll clarify
that prizes are for significant effort such as taking a photograph or creating
a map.

I thought WMUK would be interested because of your objective about addressing
content gaps, and I was hoping for some publicity such as an email to WLM2014
participants. But no problem if WMUK don't want to be involved.

Good point about photography and weather, summer 2017 probably does make more
sense.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] UK photography contest

2016-08-19 Thread Jonathan Cardy
Thanks Gordo,

We also have buildings that are scarcely visible now and are best photographed
after the leaves have fallen.

November to July makes sense to me, it also means if the contest takes off
there is plenty of time to geocode more articles without images so Rich's list
picks them up.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Mass image uploads expert

2016-10-14 Thread Jonathan Cardy
Fæ would be my first suggestion for a mass upload if he is available and the
collection is suitable. But reading through that link I'm not sure we can use
that collection. Apparently it was started forty years ago by a curator who
invited people to bring in historic photos and lend them to the museum to make
a copy.

I'm sure that's fine for the Museum to use. But I wouldn't care to argue on
Commons that this constitutes a CC-BY-SA 3 licence for all those images.
Hopefully there will be a subset which can be dated early enough to argue PD.
Maybe there are some where the rights owner can be traced, but I'd suspect
there will be a lot of photographers from an era where some will have died long
enough ago to make it difficult to trace the heirs, and others may even still
be with us. At some point in the future no doubt we can import the lot,
provided a digital copy is still extant.

Another reason why the movement needs a sealed repository from which stuff can
be migrated when it is out of copyright.

Depending on the age range of the images and the quality of the metadata there
could be a useful proportion that would be safe to upload. It all depends on
the ratio of "my grandfather died in 1880 and left us this collection" to "my
grandfather died in 1980 and left us this collection".

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Recent changes and watchlists broken on the WMUK Wiki

2018-12-01 Thread Jonathan Cardy
More radically, you could move the UK wiki to be a project on Meta.

This would end much of your costs for maintaining the wiki, other than any
domain names which you could point there. But more importantly it would include
you into Single User Login and cross wiki notifications. So if you pinged
someone in a discussion they would know about it next time they were on
Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons. It would also help lower the barriers against
involving that rather large group of Wikimedians who are in the UK but who have
had little or no contact with the chapter.

I can’t think of anything we have ever gained from having our own independent
Wiki as opposed to a project on Meta, unless you count independence and
seperation from the rest of the movement as a positive.
