[Wikimediauk-l] Join us for our 60th Wikipedia monthly workshop

2022-04-27 Thread MCANDREW Ewan
Hi folks,

Apologies for cross-posting...

This Friday 29th April (1-5pm) marks our 60th monthly Wikipedia ‘Women in Red’
meetup! You can read about 5 years’ of the University of Edinburgh’s Wikipedia
editing work tackling gender bias online in this new open access book:
Wikipedia and Academic
Libraries

“You and your students can dramatically affect the most popular and important
reference work in the world”

Editing will be on creating new pages about the women missing from our search
results as currently only 19.23% of biographies on English Wikipedia are about
women but you’re also more than welcome to edit on any subject e.g. recent new
pages inc. Raptor persecution
and the Loch Lomond
Wanderer.

  * Training for any new or less experienced editors will take place from
1pm-2:15pm, and then you can apply these valuable new digital research skills
by writing new articles of 50-100 words (or more) which we’ll publish by the
end of the afternoon. An excellent CPD opportunity 😊

  * Come for the initial training at 1pm and stay as long as you like to
experience how fun, satisfying and tangibly impactful it is to contribute to
the knowledge freely available online via the 8th most visited site in the UK,
and 9th most visited globally (rankings by Alexa).

Eventbrite signup here:
tinyurl.com/WikiWorkshop29April

NB: Yes, anyone can edit but you have to cite what you write and editing
Wikipedia inside or outside the curriculum is a free and impactful way of
improving the information available online to improve global understanding of
topics and make for a more inclusive and representative internet. Quick facts
about Wikipedia at 21 years
old.

Current projects supported by the Wikimedia residency.

  *   Digital Volunteering with
Wikipedia
 – the Edinburgh Award.
  * Improving LGBT History, Gender History and Black History online – current
Student Experience Grant project.
  * Improving the Map of Accused Witches in
Scotland – new internships this Summer.
  * Adding images of Islamic Art to
Wikipedia
 – Dr. Glaire Anderson, History of Art UG programme.
  *   Global Health Challenges Pg
Online
 – improving topic coverage of natural & manmade disasters.
  * 5 new case studies to be added to our Wikimedia in UK education
booklet.
  * 5 Wikimedia related podcast episodes in the Teaching Matters
series

Feel free to attend on Friday and feel free to suggest future collaborations.
The Wikimedia residency is a free Information Services resource available to
all staff and students. Curious? Here’s our
website
 and a 7 min video<7%20min%20video%20on%20how%20to%20write%20an%20article.> on
how to write a Wikipedia page which our student intern won an Open Education
Global award
for, among other brilliant work on making Wikipedia’s how & why easier to
engage with in Higher Education.

to disseminate verifiable open knowledge and an important tool in its
information literacy and digital skills strategy.

projects taking place throughout Scotland to address knowledge gaps online and
the work being done by a group of volunteers to improve Scots Wikipedia.
  * Making Wikipedia easier to learn and engage with, a student perspective -
Hannah Rothmann, Classics undergraduate, will outline how and why she spent
lockdown creating easy-to-follow 'how to edit' videos so that anyone at any
university can contribute to Wikipedia.
  * Wikimedia UK and the road ahead - Lucy Crompton-Reid, CEO at Wikimedia
UK, will outline some of the work being supported by the charity and the road
ahead for work in the UK as we navigate our way through the post-pandemic world.
This is a free event, open to all.
Full details of the event can be found on
Eventbrite,
where you can book a place and receive the Zoom webinar invite. More details
about Wikipedia supporting teaching and learning at the University of Edinburgh

2019-02-27 Thread MCANDREW Ewan
Dear all,

The University of Edinburgh's Information Services Group are celebrating
International Women’s Day on 8th March by renaming the Boardroom in Argyle
House after Brenda Moon, the first woman to head up a research university
library when she was Librarian here at the University of Edinburgh in the 1980s
and 90s. Brenda played a major role in bringing the University into the digital
age, as Edinburgh became the first major university library in the UK to tackle
and deliver a computer-based service.

Two events will coincide with the launch of the Brenda Moon Room: our
Wikimedian in Residence will be hosting a Wikipedia-editing session for staff,
students and friends of the University to create Wikipedia entries for notable
women currently missing from the encyclopaedia site, and at the Main Library,
LTW Equality and Diversity Images Intern Francesca Vavotici will be hosting a
‘Sketch-a-thon’ using images from the Centre for Research Collections’ Special
Collections. All artistic abilities welcome!

Wikipedia Editathon – Women of Edinburgh:

This event is open to staff, students and friends of the University and is an
opportunity to help add more notable women associated with Edinburgh to
Wikipedia, where only 18% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about
women.

Time: 11:00am – 5pm

Venue: Argyle House, 3 Lady Lawson Street, Edinburgh EH3 9DR

[Wikimediauk-l] The #Vote100 Wikipedia editathon NEEDS YOU - We've moved!

2018-02-08 Thread MCANDREW Ewan
Dear colleagues,

Please disseminate to interested colleagues as appropriate – this event is open
to all.

We’ve moved our #Vote100 Wikipedia editing event to the
University of Edinburgh’s central campus and the Teaching Studio LG.07 at David
Hume Tower Building. The event is part of the Festival of Creative Learning and
2018’s celebration of one hundred years since the Representation of the People
Act (1918)
came into force and women were finally given the right to vote, almost fifty
years after the Edinburgh Seven fought for and won the right to train and
practice as doctors. #Vote100 #FCL18
Festival of Creative Learning events – Free and open to all!

  1. #Vote100 Wikipedia editing event (22 February
2018).
  2. Wikidata
Hackathon
 – Learn how to edit Wikipedia’s most exciting sister project (21 Feb).
  3. Histropedia

 – create bespoke visually dynamic

This email is to invite you take part in the event where you can learn how to
edit, meet supportive colleagues, have refreshments and help address
Wikipedia’s systemic bias by publishing a new article of your choice about a
suffragette, a notable women in medicine or any of the incredible women missing
from Wikipedia e.g. Bessie Watson, the Scottish child suffragette and
piper. More
suggestions for pages to edit are very welcome.

Bring a friend, bring two! We have a very large room, food and drink and lots
of pages to create. No editing experience necessary, full training will be
provided and it’s super easy (& fun) to do.

Only 17.39% of biographies on Wikipedia are about notable women so there are a
great many notable women missing (both historic and contemporary) from
Wikipedia and from Google’s top search results.

I hope you can find time to attend as we could greatly use your support.

[Wikimediauk-l] Love books? You'll love our Lost Literary Edinburgh editathon

2017-11-03 Thread MCANDREW Ewan

Hi,

We would be delighted if you could join us for the Lost Literary Edinburgh
editathon on 24 November 2017, part of the AHRC-funded ‘Being Human’ festival.

Many famous authors have made Edinburgh their setting and subject. But it’s
also a place rich in voices and stories that are now just the faintest of
echoes around its streets and tenements.

The AhRC-funded LitLong app and web resource recovers some of these lives and
stories, giving them back to the city and its readers. But LitLong users rely
on the common store of knowledge built up elsewhere online, so in this event
we’ll be adding to that store by creating and improving Wikipedia pages for
neglected or overlooked authors in the LitLong database.

Full training will be given. New editors very welcome. Visit
bit.ly/LostEdinburgh for more details and do have a look at our list of authors
we are seeking to create Wikipedia pages for.

How many have you read & enjoyed?

Hope you can join us to help recognise their contribution to literature.

[Wikimediauk-l] We would love you to join us for our Scottish Living Artists editathon - 24 November

2017-11-03 Thread MCANDREW Ewan
Hi,

Scotland’s vibrant art scene is not currently adequately reflected on
Wikipedia, the globe’s largest information source. In celebration of the
Jacqueline Donachie exhibition, on 24th November 2017, participants at the
Scottish Contemporary Artists editathon have a unique chance to contribute
content to the Wikipedia pages of some of Scotland’s most prominent living
artists.
You will receive a tour of the exhibition, training on how to edit Wikipedia
pages and the kind of resources that are best to use when editing, and be
provided with access to materials from the libraries of the Fruitmarket Gallery
and Edinburgh College of Art.
Find out more about the event at bit.ly/ScottishLivingArtists. You will find a
list of the artists that have been identified that need additional information,
however please contact
designinformat...@ed.ac.uk if you have
further suggestions about artists to be included.
In addition, on Friday 17th November at 10am Neil Lebeter, Art Collections
Curator and Deputy Head of Museums will lead a unique visit to the University
of Edinburgh’s Collections where he will bring out a selection of Jonathan
Owen’s work, whose entry is on the list to be edited on the 24th. Neil will
give an insight into Jonathan’s work and processes, as well as how the work is
acquired by the University.

Places are limited so don’t delay if you would like to join us!

Best wishes,

Ewan

Before that, the world’s largest photo competition, Wiki Loves

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] #4947276 Invoice secondary Notice

2017-08-23 Thread MCANDREW Ewan
Dear all,
Suffice to say I won’t ever be asking to pay invoices on this mailing list but
many apologies for the phishing email you received which purported to come from
my email address. I can see this has generated a great deal of discussion on
this thread.
Just to make you aware that I’ve reported the issue to the IS helpline here at
the university who are looking into this as a matter of urgency. I’ve also run
Malware checks on both my computer and mobile (using Malwarebytes and Norton)
but nothing seems amiss/ turning up in these scans so far.
I’m wondering also if this is not a university email problem per se given I
have also received another phishing scam email to my gmail purporting to be
from Jason’s email address at the National Library of Wales. So Jason and
Wikimedia UK list admins may want to run scans too (belt and braces after all!).
Apologies all once again.

We have a really exciting programme lined up this year with a range of topics
including:

Wikidata I/O Showcase

Programme Hot Pick - Wikidata Showcase

This Wikidata event at Repo Fringe is scheduled for 1pm to 3.15pm on Friday 4th
August. It will be split into two main segments.

Part 1: Adding data to Wikidata: the Wikidata hackathon
The first session, from 1pm to 2.30pm, will focus on how to add data to
Wikidata so this will include a short intro to what Wikidata is before looking
at how individual items of data can be added to and, importantly, backed up
with references as part of a data hackathon.

Part 2: Querying and visualising Wikidata
The second session, 2.30pm to 3.15pm, will look at how the data in Wikidata can
be consumed, queried and visualised; whether it’s Voltaire’s works, the
collections of the National Library of Wales, an analysis of MPs’ occupations
or the 3 million linked citations visualised using the new Scholia tool.

In addition to these sessions we are also running a SPARQL workshop from
9.30am-10.30am on Friday morning.

Find out more about our programme at:
http://rfringe17.blogs.edina.ac.uk/programme/

2017 marks the 10th Repo Fringe where we will be celebrating progress we have
made over the last 10 years in sharing content beyond borders and debating
future trends and challenges.

We look forward to seeing you in August!

Scotland’s famous, and infamous, medical figures including gruesome
body-snatcher William Burke and intriguing alumni Dr. James Miranda Barry. Come
join us for all the fun and gain digital skills, learn how to edit Wikipedia,
explore our history and harness the power of the web for public engagement.

With a variety of excellent guest speakers each day, an end of day tour of the
Surgeons’ Hall museum after closing time and plenty of refreshments to support
you to improve Wikipedia’s coverage of medicine-related content, you’ll learn
how to edit and participate in an open knowledge community.

Participants can attend one day or both and will be supported to develop
articles of their choice related to the history of medicine. NB: Please bring a

We are also putting on an evening editathon on Wednesday 16th November 3pm to
7.30pm in Room 1.12 of the Edinburgh University Main Library to mark the end of
the Festival of Architecture 2016. So many names,
especially women
architects,
are missing from Wikipedia, the #1 Information
site,
so if you’d like to take part and help redress the balance then you’d be more
than welcome.

Full training is given along with suggested pages to work on (although feel
free to suggest your own!). There are only 3000 or so very active Wikipedians
in the world curating the world’s knowledge (which amounts to the size of a
small town like Kinghorn in Fife... or half the size of North Berwick) so if
you’d like to contribute to sharing knowledge globally and are interested in
architecture, even if it is just to share some openly-licensed pictures to
Wikimedia Commons, then please do come along. Book your place and find out more
here.

In remembrance
Finally, as today is all about remembrance, I thought I’d share with you the
outcomes of the Halloween
Wikipedia
event as there are now some fantastic pages on notable lives that were just
not there before, including:

· Recognising the scientific work of Katherine Clerk
Maxwell

· Professor William Lindsay
Renwick, the founder of
the School of Scottish Studies at Edinburgh University (also commemorated on
the Glasgow School of Art’s WW1 Roll of Honour).

· Ernest Francis
Bashford the influential
British oncologist who pioneered the biological approach to the study of cancer.

· Brenda Moon – the first
female chief of a university library in Scotland who played a role in bringing
Edinburgh University Library into the digital age.

· Janet Anne Galloway
(1841–1909) promoted higher education for women in Scotland. As a result of
the limited educational opportunities open to women, Janet became an active
supporter of the movement for higher education provision for women.

Full outcomes are detailed
here and you can find the
Storify with pics & tweets from the day
here.

Many thanks,

[Wikimediauk-l] Between the Worlds of the Living & The Dead - A Wikipedia editathon for Samhuinn: Gaelic Festival For the Dead

2016-10-04 Thread MCANDREW Ewan
Wikipedia editathon for Samhuinn: Gaelic Festival for the Dead 31st Oct-1st
Nov.

Come join us as we set a place for the dead; through helping to create new
biography articles and improving existing articles on Wikipedia as part of a
day of celebration.

On Halloween, Monday 31st October 2016 & continuing on 1st November 2016, the
University’s Information
Services team are
running an edit-a-thon in two magnificent venues to celebrate the lives of
those sadly passed on to mark Samhuinn: the Gaelic Festival for the Dead!

The event page is located at bit.ly/WikiHalloween

Samhuinn is a Gaelic festival marking
the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the “darker half”
of the year. Traditionally, it is celebrated from the very beginning of one
Celtic day to its end, or in the modern calendar, from sunset on 31 October to
sunset on 1 November.

Samhuinn was seen as a liminal time,
when the boundary between this world and the Otherworld could more easily be
crossed. This meant the Aos Sí, the ‘spirits’ or ‘fairies’, could more easily
come into our world. Offerings of food and drink were left outside for them.
The souls of the dead were also thought to revisit their homes seeking
hospitality.

Each day will have different guest speakers discussing the traditions of
Samhuinn, Celtic history & folklore and the importance of remembering the dead
on this day.

Feel free to suggest notable lives & articles we’ve overlooked & should be
creating too.

Bring your best spookily carved turnip along and win a prize. We will have
tablet skulls to munch on and guest speakers telling us about Celtic customs,
beliefs & folklore. Hopefully, we may even be visited by the Faerie
Porters too…..

Working together with liaison librarians, archivists & academic colleagues we
will provide training on how to edit and participate in an open knowledge
community. Participants will be supported to develop articles covering areas
which could stand to be improved in order to improve Wikipedia’s representation
of notable lives; be they connected to the university, to Edinburgh, to
Scotland or further afield.

[Wikimediauk-l] Ada Lovelace Day 2016 Wikipedia editathon at University of Edinburgh - Booking details are now live

2016-09-21 Thread MCANDREW Ewan

Booking for Ada Lovelace Day 2016 is now live - please feel free to pass on
details to people you feel maybe interested in coming along.

[ADA_Blog]

Ada Lovelace, "The Enchantress of
Numbers".

On Tuesday 11th October 2016, in Room 1.12 of the University of Edinburgh Main
Library, we will again be running a Wikipedia edit-a-thon to celebrate Ada
Lovelace Day 2016, an international celebration day of
the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

What's involved?

Beginning at 10am with a range of guest speakers in the morning, this will be
followed by fun technology activities from 11am to 1pm:

· Metadata
games

· Fun with BBC Microbit - a handheld, fully
programmable computer that you can use for all sorts of cool creations, from
robots to musical instruments - the possibilities are endless.

· Fun with Sonic Pi - the live coding music synth
for everyone.

· Create Lego
calculators/adders.

· Colour in a giant 'Garden of
Ada' design; hand drawn by
our Interactive Content team.

Did you know that approximately only 16% of the biographies on Wikipedia relate
to notable women? If you'd like to help redress this imbalance, new editors are
very welcome and participants will be supported to develop Wikipedia articles;
creating new role models for young and old alike.

Full Wikipedia editing training will be given at 1-2pm. Thereafter the
afternoon's editathon from 2-5pm will focus on improving the quality of
Wikipedia articles related to Women in STEM!

The event page can be accessed here: http://bit.ly/2cGapkn

Who was Ada Lovelace?

Ada Lovelace (1815-1852), the only legitimate child of the poet George, Lord
Byron and his wife Anne Isabella
Milbanke,
was an English mathematician and writer, chiefly known for her work on Charles
Babbage's early mechanical
general-purpose computer, the Analytical
Engine. Her notes on the
engine include what is recognised as the first algorithm intended to be carried
out by a machine. As a result, she is often regarded as the first computer
programmer with her work a major influence on Alan Turing & inspiring countless
others. There's now a graphic novel of her
short but brilliant life and you can read more about her
here.

Want to come?

For booking purposes, the day is split in two parts: talks & technology
activities in the morning and the Women in STEM Wikipedia editathon in the
afternoon.

You can attend both morning and afternoon sessions or just one.

  * To book a place for the morning activities (10am to 1pm):
 * Click here for Ada Lovelace Day - talks & fun technology
activities
  * To book a place for the afternoon editathon (1pm to 5pm):
 * Click here for the Women in STEM Wikipedia
edit-a-thon
 *

Time for lunch?

Food can be brought into the room and the fun technology activities from 11am
to 1pm can be dropped in and out of. Tea & coffee will be provided and there is
also the Library Cafe downstairs where you can get refreshments and a bite to
eat.

Not a student or staff member of the university? A limited number of tickets
are available through Eventbrite (links are on the event page).

Suggestions for notable Women in STEM who could & should be represented on
Wikipedia?

Feel free to suggest name of notable women we could include as part of this day
of celebration. Email me at ewan.mcand...@ed.ac.uk

Hope to see you there!

[Wikimediauk-l] Last call for the Wikisource & Wikidata Showcase at Repo Fringe 2016 - 1st & 2nd August 2016

2016-07-27 Thread MCANDREW Ewan
**Apologies for cross posting**

Please disseminate to interested parties.

With less than a week to go until Repository Fringe 2016 takes place in
Edinburgh on 1st & 2nd August 2016, registrations are filling up fast and we
have a packed programme which will hopefully pique your interest!

Find out more about some of our programme items below – the full
programme is available online.

Register
now!

Registration for Repo Fringe closes on Thursday 28th July 2016 so please book
soon to be assured of your place.

Programme Hot Pick - Wikidata & Wikisource Showcase

Our Tuesday programme features a mammoth Wikidata & Wikisource Showcase hosted
by Histropedia’s Navino Evans, the Bodleian Library’s Wikimedian in Residence,
Martin Poulter, and the University of Edinburgh’s Wikimedian in Residence, Ewan
McAndrew.

More information about the
Showcase and
what the sessions will cover which is available online now and is summarised
here:

10am-11.05am Wikisource showcase - “It’s not what you do, it’s what it does to
you.”

Libraries are under threat as never before with an estimated 450 closures in
the last six years (Flood, 2016).

Safeguarding digital heritage and ‘the democracy of reading’ (Smith in Shaffi,
2015) therefore has never been more important.

In this first session of our three showcase events for Repository Fringe 2016,
we will introduce you to Wikisource: Wikimedia’s free library of
openly-licensed source texts.

“Libraries are about freedom. Freedom to read, freedom of ideas, freedom of
communication. They are about education (which is not a process that finishes
the day we leave school or university), about entertainment, about making safe
spaces, and about access to information.” (Neil Gaiman, 2013)

In this session we will explain:

· Why Wikisource is receiving increased attention & affection.

· How it adds value to the collections of libraries & archives.

· The crucial role Wikisource plays in raising the visibility,
accessibility & appreciation of out-of-copyright texts & their authors.

· How Wikisource links to its sister projects: Wikipedia, Wikicommons and
Wikidata.

“Quotations or images from centuries ago can still touch or inspire, and as
readers share this reaction online, the interested audience grows. The
Wikimedia projects make it easy for people to enjoy and share out-of-copyright
text, creating and satisfying a modern curiosity about past authors.”(Poulter,
2015)

What will the session include?

· An introduction to what Wikisource is and how you can engage with it.

· A practical activity where you will learn how to navigate Wikisource
and proofread a page of text.

· An introduction to how Wikisource links with Wikipedia (the free
encyclopaedia), Wikicommons (the free media repository) & Wikidata (the free
repository of structured data).

· Examples demonstrating how texts can be uploaded, transcribed and
proofread.

· Examples demonstrating how everyone - libraries & archives in
particular - can involve people around the world in having authentic contact
with the past through Wikisource.

Like every Wikimedia project, Wikisource is free to use by absolutely anyone so
people of all disciplines and walks of life are encouraged to attend this
session. Basic knowledge of using the internet will be needed to get involved
in the practical activity, but there are no other pre-requisites.

Anyone interested in libraries, archives & open knowledge repositories of all
kinds should come away excited about the possibilities Wikisource, and its
sister projects, offer!

What should I bring?

Bring a laptop if possible as this will be needed when we learn to navigate our
way around Wikisource and for the practical demonstration of proofreading a
page of Wikisource text. In addition, please have a think if there are
copyright-free source texts you would like to see transcribed to Wikisource.

It would also be a huge help if you could create an
account
on Wikisource before arriving (if you have ever edited Wikipedia before, you
can use the same login details)

Dear Delegate

Thanks for registering for Repository Fringe 2016!

Make sure you keep checking the website
for updates about various aspects of the
programme - and feel free to
pass this information on to anyone else who might find the Showcase of interest!

You can find out more about our Keynote
Speakers online as well
as full details of our mammoth Wikidata & Wikisource
Showcase,
which is summarised here in brief:

Wikisource showcase - "It's not what you do, it's what it does to you"

As well as providing lots of examples, this introductory session looks at why
Wikisource is receiving increased attention and affection and how it adds value
to the collections of libraries and archives. It will also talk about the role
Wikisource plays in raising the visibility, accessibility and appreciation of
out-of-copyright texts and their authors, and how Wikisource links to its
sister projects, Wikipedia, Wikicommons and Wikidata.

Wikidata showcase - The possibilities are endless

During the second session, attendees will get hands-on, learning the nuts and
bolts of how to use and edit Wikidata. It will also cover methods for accessing
data and showcase some of the most exciting applications and visualisations
that have already been built on Wikidata.

Wikidata Advanced Tools workshop

The last slot of the day is a more technical workshop aimed at people who are
interested in learning more about advanced methods for accessing Wikidata in an
automated way.

***

Use EPrints?

Les Carr will be doing a bumper user group session which also looks at
brainstorming 'flavours' for bespoke repositories, followed up by a second
session looking ahead to the future of EPrints in Version 4.0 and the new ideas
from the COAR Future Repositories. More information to come shortly...

***

Submit a Poster

We are still looking for poster submissions from people who have something to
tell the world about. Posters can relate either to one of this year's
conference themes or to repository management in general.

If you would like to submit a poster, please email your proposed title and an
abstract of up to 200 words to explain the aim of your poster to
repofri...@gmail.com. The submission deadline is 15th July 2016.

[Wikimediauk-l] Wiki meetups - Summer 2016 (Jolly Botanist in Edinburgh on 14th July - CCA in Glasgow on 16th July)

2016-06-28 Thread MCANDREW Ewan

Hello,

I’ve newly returned from the annual Wikimania conference in Italy only to find
the UK has decided to leave the European Union.

Whatever your views of Brexit, the sharing of Open Knowledge globally remains
an important area of cross-border collaboration and it was great to see that
working so successfully & positively for the last few days.

With that in mind, and to keep the momentum going, we have two Wiki Social
meets lined up for July; one in Edinburgh on the evening of Thursday 14th July
and one in Glasgow on the afternoon of Saturday 16th July.

  * Have you been editing Wikipedia for some time? Do you have ideas of how
you’d like to see the Wikimedia movement progress in Scotland?
  * Have you just begun? Do you feel confident in editing Wikipedia? How can
we help you progress?
  * Have you never edited Wikipedia before but would be interested in taking
your first steps in learning how? Are you aware of Wikipedia’s new Visual
Editor interface which makes editing as easy as using MS Word or Wordpress
blogging?
  * If you have attended one of our training sessions / edit-a-thons, have
you continued to edit Wikipedia since that time? Again, how can we help you
progress?
  * Are you interested in training others? Or in including assignments within
courses?
  * Are you interested in learning more and chatting informally with
like-minded individuals?

These meetups are informal gatherings with no formal agenda, but please feel
free to add any topics that you'd like to raise for discussion on the event
pages.

  1. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/Glasgow/8
  2. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/Edinburgh/11

About the meetups

The meetups are intended to include any interested Wikimedians who find
themselves in Edinburgh or can make their way to Edinburgh on the day. Anyone
who has attended previous meetups in Glasgow or Edinburgh are encouraged to
return to meet new faces! It will be a social gathering for Wikimedia
enthusiasts, where we...

  * Have a bite to eat and a drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic!).
  * Chat about Wikipedia and any other topics we fancy!

[Wikimediauk-l] Glasgow Wiki Social this Saturday 30th April

2016-04-28 Thread MCANDREW Ewan
Hi

Just a wee reminder that there is a Wiki meetup this Saturday in Glasgow (30th
April).

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/Glasgow/7

ALL WELCOME.

I'll be outside Sharmanka at 2.45pm (inside the reception area if it is
raining) at 103 Trongate so I can meet you there and go inside for the 3pm
show. I'll have a Wikimedia bag & Wiki booklets with me so you can recognise
me.

Only £5 for the show but please bring cash to pay for your ticket as that is
what the Sharmanka exhibition have requested.

If you don't fancy Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre then we have a table booked at
4.15pm round the corner at Mono cafebar at 12 Kings Court.

So come along for coffee/tea/beer/wine/cider/food (delete as appropriate) +
relaxing weekend Wiki discussion and social chitchat among like-minded folk who
are interested in finding out more about Wikipedia.

Not sure about the venue this time round? Why not swing by to suggest an
alternative venue for the next meet? Happy to roam throughout Glasgow as long
as it is bright, light & comfy with wifi.
The CCA? The Belle? So many good venues BUT you can help shape where we pop
into next time round. Looking to do this every 2 months so your input would be
appreciated.

Hopefully see you at Mono & Sharmanka this time anyway!

Oh, by the way, please don't forget that there is also an Edinburgh meetup next
week on Thursday 5th May too.

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/Edinburgh/10

Come for the Plague exhibition and some convivial chat in the National Library
of Scotland café (we've been promised one of the boardrooms if we can get more
than few bods to turn up. Gotta say, I'm curious to see what the inner sanctum
of the NLS looks like.)

Cheers

Ewan

[Wikimediauk-l] Wiki Social meets in Edinburgh & Glasgow

2016-04-17 Thread MCANDREW Ewan
Hi,

All is now booked for the Wikimeets in Glasgow (30th April) -
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/Glasgow/7#Glasgow_Wikimedia_Meetup_Number_7

And in Edinburgh (5th May)
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/Edinburgh/10#Edinburgh_Wikimedia_Meetup_Number_10

So if you’re free and can make those locations on those dates then the more the
merrier. Just add your name to the list of attendees on the above event pages.

Please also feel free to mention to people you believe maybe interested in
attending; whether they have been editing for years or perhaps have never
edited at all (as yet, hopefully).

http://sharmanka.com/Home/Welcome.html

If you would like to attend the Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre at 3pm in Glasgow on
30th April then the venue have advised to arrive at 2.45pm and to bring cash to
pay the entrance fee (£5 per person) and please also let me know that you’d
like to attend the Sharmanka event so I can keep the venue updated on numbers
(booked for 4 people to start with). If Sharmanka is not for you then just join
nus in Mono cafebar round the corner at 4.15.

Any queries then let me know.

Hopefully, see you there!

Cheers,

Ewan

[Wikimediauk-l] Hello! / University of Edinburgh editathon

2016-02-14 Thread MCANDREW Ewan
Hi,

Apologies for cross posting!

Just a short email to say hello as the new Wikimedian in Residence at the
University of Edinburgh (January 2016 to January 2017) and to make you aware of
the editathon session that the University of Edinburgh is running on Tuesday
16th February to Thursday 18th February which Sara Thomas and I are hosting at
room LG.07 in the David Hume Tower Building, George Square, Edinburgh, EH8 9JX.

The topic is on the History of Medicine on this occasion. It covers medical
terms not currently covered on Wikipedia as well as historic Edinburgh
locations which have played a large role in the history of medicine. It also
broadens out to cover notable personages in the history of medicine such as the
infamous Burke & Hare grave-robbers as well as the intriguing case of James
Miranda Barry and continuing our work on those female pioneers of the medical
profession such as ‘the Edinburgh 7’ whose stories continue to be
under-represented on Wikipedia.

There will be refreshments (inc. free lunch if you wish to edit in the morning
and afternoon sessions), guest speakers, online materials to work with,
physical materials to work with including, hopefully, the letter written in
William Burke’s own blood. We’re also looking for some buildings associated
with Edinburgh’s role in the history of medicine to be photographed and
uploaded to Wikicommons. You can attend one day or multiple days (or just half
a day) if you so desire. Either in person or remotely joining in. It’s open to
all. You’d be very welcome.

Full details on how to register are on the event page here:
https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Creating_an_Open_Body_of_Knowledge_editathon_series

The project page for the residency is here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:University_of_Edinburgh

I’d be grateful if you could pass this on to anyone you think maybe interested.

Let me know if you have any questions regarding the event, the residency or
about collaborating on any projects.

Very best regards,

Ewan
