Hoi,
While everybody can start with sources, it is very much duplicated and
wasted effort. The suggestion to use Kiwix is excellent. Please do hack on
things where it makes a difference. Why bother start from scratch when the
results are available in a nicely formatted way ?

[Wikitech-l] MediaWiki template page edit by IP?

2014-04-24 Thread Thomas Gries

Hello,

recently I saw this edit of a template page on MediaWiki

an anon.

Do we really have the template Namespace on MediaWiki open for edits by

In my view, this should be changed.

Why indeed. Note that the only thing special or magical about the template
namespace is that {{something}} shortcuts to {{template:something}}. Other
than that it's just another page.

I have no idea why users of a who are mad enough to want to edit a template
but don't have an account should be disallowed from doing so, other than
that we should be making it obligatory to require informed consent before
exposing anyone to template syntax. As long as we're not doing that for
logged in users, I frankly can't seen the difference.

make an API call like
this:https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=parsepage=List%20of%20circulating%20currenciesprop=sectionsformat=jsonfm.
This returns 5 sections with numbers which I can use as reference
points, but I would rather have a number for the table in the section.
A section can have multiple tables.

Querying specific (structured) data from Wikipedia is still very
difficult in my opinion. My suggestion is that every paragraph, image,
link and table get a unique identifiable number. This way Wikipedia gets

I see where you are coming from, but this implies that these are stable
properties over multiple revisions, which they aren't. If I have a table in
revision 1, remove it in revision 2, and add it back in in revision 3, is
it still the same table? What if I slightly change it? How much do I have
to change it before its identity changes?

A wiki(pedia) page is by its very nature a dynamic construct, and assigning
stable identifiers to elements would make this at least extremely
impractical.

You want Semantic MediaWiki[1] then (which the Wikipedias don't use) or
Wikidata[2], which is one of Wikipedia's sister projects and has been growing
very fast. Wikipedia was never intended to be machine-readable in the way you
propose (although it does provide access to MediaWiki's awesome API).

[Wikitech-l] SOA: what's agreed, and what's still undecided

2014-04-24 Thread Sumana Harihareswara
Several people had a meeting last week to start answering the question:

What do our SOA plans look like for the next fiscal year? How much
of this work will be spent refactoring MW Core, vs. augmenting with
 new, non-MediaWiki framework(s)?

Here's my summary of what we agreed on last week and what we still need
to work out. (Participants included WMF engineers, Wikia engineers, and
Markus Glaser.)

Agreed:
* Modularity is a good thing
* WMF will start inviting a Wikia engineer to the weekly scrum of
scrums meeting
* Wikia will have an all-team meeting in May in SF - will then compare
notes with WMF about what toolset they're choosing for WikiFactory the
new mobile article page prototype

(Please also see lines 240-252 of the full notes for SOA risks and
deliverables we'll need from service providers:
http://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/soa-kickoff )

Undecided:
* what parts of MediaWiki will be refactored to follow in Parsoid's
footsteps, who is going to do that, and when
* what the working group's concrete targets would be, and who would be in it
* what languages to write services in
* whether Rashomon will only have a REST API or a PHP one as well
* how to communicate between WMF and Wikia (wikitech-l? a different
list? lightweight IRC meetings?)
* who is Wikia's negotiating partner at WMF, who can authoritatively
decide which languages/tools MediaWiki will use

Given this, I'll continue working on architectural guidelines that
prescribe modularity in general but don't specifically call for SOA in
all new features.

Thanks.

We (the Parsoid team) are actually working on this, see
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Parsoid/MediaWiki_DOM_spec/Element_IDs

Besides making it possible to reference content, our goal is to use these
ids as a key that lets us associate additional metadata with each element in
the DOM.

We expect stable element ids to be available in Parsoid output by this summer.

In the past, /this /page was indeed a vey /sensitive /template because

[Wikitech-l] MediaWiki Security and Maintenance Releases: 1.22.6 and 1.21.9

2014-04-24 Thread Markus Glaser
Hello everyone,

I would like to announce the release of MediaWiki 1.22.6 and 1.21.9. This is a
regular security and maintenance release. Download links are given at the end
of this email. Please note there is no new release of the 1.19 branch, as it is
not affected by the security issue.

== Security ==
* (bug 63251) SECURITY: escape sortKey in pageInfo.

== Bugfixes in 1.21.9 ==
* (bug 58640) Fixed a compatibility issue with PCRE 8.34 that caused pages
to appear blank or with missing text.

Full release notes for 1.22.6:
