[Wikitech-l] Please help finish "Cases" page of CoC (+updates)

2015-11-24 Thread Matthew Flaschen
We are now working on the "Cases" page of the draft Code of conduct.
This will become a separate page (for readability of the final CoC), but
is being drafted on the same page with the rest.

This includes both the intro section, and all the sub-sections, which
means everything that starts with "2." in the ToC. Currently this is
"Handling reports", "Responses and resolutions", and "Appealing a
resolution". However, the sections within "Cases" may change:

* Section:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Code_of_Conduct/Draft#Page:_Code_of_conduct_for_technical_spaces.2FCases

* Talk:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Code_of_Conduct/Draft#Finishing_the_Cases_page

* Alternatively, you can provide anonymous feedback to
conduct-discuss...@wikimedia.org .

This is the best time to make any necessary changes to this page (and
explain why, in edit summaries and/or talk) and discuss it on the talk page.

Other updates:

* The text of the "Report a problem" section has been frozen. Thanks to
everyone who helped discuss and edit these sections. Participation
(including both named and anonymous) helped us improve the
confidentiality line.

Thanks,

Matt Flaschen

[Wikitech-l] Ending RFC review meetings a little early

2015-11-24 Thread Rob Lanphier
Hi folks,

One idea that achieved consensus here at WMF, but was never discussed
publicly (that I'm aware of) is the idea that meetings should use the
Google Calendar speedy meeting option.[1]

Since we didn't have a public discussion of this, it's technically not
the standard for RFC review meetings. However, this led to the
natural question "why not?"

Sowhy not? Is there any opposition to us ending RFC meetings 5-10
minutes early?

Rob

[Wikitech-l] OOjs UI 0.14.0 Release (breaking change)

2015-11-24 Thread James Forrester
Hey all,

I released OOjs UI 0.14.0 today. It will be in MW from 1.27.0-wmf.8+, which
will be deployed to Wikimedia production in the regular train starting on
Tuesday 8 December. As there are a couple of nominal breaking changes and a
deprecation, please look carefully over them to determine if they affect
your code.

*Breaking changes since last release:*

   - [BREAKING CHANGE] TextInputWidget: Remove old deprecated alias
   #setPosition (Ed Sanders)

We deprecated the old function in v0.8.1 back in February when it was
renamed to setLabelPosition, but we forgot to remove the aliases until
now. There are no known uses of this old name.

   - [BREAKING CHANGE] Depend on OOjs v1.1.10, up from v1.1.9 (James D.
   Forrester)

This is a breaking change because the library requires an environmental
change. However, for MediaWiki users, this is already take care of and will
   have no effect.

*Deprecating change since last release:*

   - [DEPRECATING CHANGE] InputWidget: Replace `#setRTL` with `#setDir` (Ed
   Sanders)

This function was poorly named (LTR-centrism!) and would only let you
set 'rtl', rather than 'auto' or explict 'ltr', so we replaced it with a
better function that doesn't assume the whole world works in one direction.
:-) For now, #setRTL will still work, but please switch over to #setDir
before it is removed in OOjs UI v0.16.0.

   - [DEPRECATING CHANGE] ComboBoxWidget: Refactor into ComboBoxInputWidget
   (Bartosz Dziewoński)

We changed ComboBoxWidget to inherit from TextInputWidget (rather
than embedding
one inside itself), and renamed it to match. This simplifies the library
and reduces the scope for bugs. ComboBoxWidget will continue to work for
now (as an alias), but please switch over to ComboBoxInputWidget before
it is removed in OOjs UI v0.16.0.

   - [DEPRECATING CHANGE] De-duplicate 'trash' and 'remove' icons (James D.
   Forrester)

As part of our on-going work to slim down the library, we have merged
the old core 'remove' icon into the 'trash' one in the 'moderation' icon
pack. For now, 'remove' will still work, but please switch over to 'trash'
before it is removed in OOjs UI v0.16.0.

   - [DEPRECATING CHANGE] Duplicate icons: Unify 'picture' and 'image' (Ed
   Sanders)

As part of our on-going work to slim down the library, we have merged
the old core 'picture' icon into the 'image' one in the 'media' icon pack.
We also renamed the 'photoGallery' icon to 'imageGallery' for consistency.
For now, 'picture' and 'photoGallery' will still work, but please switch
over to 'image' and 'imageGallery' respectively before they are removed in
   OOjs UI v0.16.0.

   - [DEPRECATING CHANGE] MediaWiki, Apex themes: Unify add/insert icons
   (Ed Sanders)

As part of our on-going work to slim down the library, we have merged
the old core 'insert' icon into the 'add' one in the 'editing-advanced'
icon pack. For now, 'insert' will still work, but please switch over to
'add' before it is removed in OOjs UI v0.16.0.

Additional details are in the full change log

. If you have any further questions or need help dealing with deprecations,
please let me know. As always, general library documentation is available
at mediawiki.org
 and generated code-level documentation
and interactive demos at doc.mediawiki.org
.

Requests for comments used to be 30 minutes (two in an hour), but the
trend lately seems to have shifted toward one per hour.

I would hope that most people aren't paying attention to the meeting time
length. RFCs vary widely in scope and complexity, so I think it makes
sense to hold a meeting (or multiple meetings) as often as is appropriate
and necessary for the specific RFC. If you think a topic can be discussed
in a time slot smaller than 60 minutes, schedule it for that.

This is to say, I can't imagine anyone cares what your Google Calendar
settings are, but I do think people shouldn't let themselves or their
thoughts be cut off by arbitrary time limits. The start and end to the
"formal" discussion can be decided by the person operating that silly bot.

2015-11-24 Thread Erik Bernhardson
Thoughts are always cut off by arbitrary time limits, currently that
arbitrary time is 1 hour. I'm in favor of changing this to 50 minutes. This
ensures participants can be involved in the entirety of the RFC discussion
and not have to leave early due to another commitment that starts on the
hour.

[Wikitech-l] Little "Photos of the month" web app

2015-11-24 Thread Joaquin Oltra Hernandez
Hi!

A couple of months ago I taught a workshop for learning ClojureScript at a
conference, and for the second part I had the students play with a web app.

I set up a scaffold and api fetching/cleaning the media of the month from
commons so that they could code and test stuff.

I thought I would share, it's pretty stupid but the result is clean and
beautiful to read (because the pictures are beautiful).

http://chimeces.com/photo-of-the-day/ (it's media of the month, excuse the
url :p)

Source is at https://github.com/joakin/photo-of-the-day

If you want to learn the ClojureScript language you can try to follow the
online version of the workshop:
*
http://chimeces.com/cljs-browser-repl/#/notebook/diving-into-clojurescript/file/index

And play with this repo when you're done!

Cheers,
Joaquin
