Re: [Wikitech-l] [Toolserver-l] Amsterdam Hackathon 2013

2013-01-29 Thread Butch Bustria
Hello,

We would like to know how to obtain a travel scholarship to Amsterdam
Hackathon 2013.

We are confused as Wikimedia events are out of scope for participation
grant
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Participation_Grants#Wikimedia-organized_events

and I read that the GlamCamp Amsterdam 2011 Travel Scholarships was
withdrawn "*at request of WMF in order that the individual applicants can
apply for the new Participation Grants system"*

Re: [Wikitech-l] MediaWiki Event in the Philippines

2013-01-27 Thread Butch Bustria
Thanks for the suggestion Quim and Harsh.

We can organize a hangout at any Saturday of our choice (starting Feb 16).

Though we are aware of the bountiful of materials available on the web, we
are facing a challenge of making it simpler (like infographics) to persons
starting to learn mediawiki. When we provide the tutorial links to our
potential students, they are overwhelmed. So making it like a typical
workshop module (like Session 1, Session 2.. etc) is a good strategy.

[Wikitech-l] MediaWiki Event in the Philippines

2013-01-24 Thread Butch Bustria
Hello,

Last January 12, some web technology enthusiasts attend the first MediaWiki
meetup / orientation in Makati City, Philippines.

Here is the photo from fb:
https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/71495_10151206726144397_1656935086_n.jpg

Part of the things discussed is having a workshop for aspiring developers.
Since our community is in its infancy and there is scarcity of subject
matter experts, may we ask your assistance in planning and developing this
outreach workshop.

Part of the assistance include:

1. Having a resource speaker / guru to train and assist our future local
tech trainers
2. Creation of a workshop module that include exercises and practice tests

Depending on the outcome of our plan, we are targeting to have this started
this April in time on our Summer break. Summer in the Philippines coincides
with Spring in other places in the northern hemisphere.

Thank you.

2012-07-03 Thread Butch Bustria
I hope it will be developed for use of an average person who simply just
want to create an article offline and on the go and then upload it once it
is complete.

2012-07-02 Thread Butch Bustria
Thanks for that info. We will do that thing in the future.

Hopefully there could be a development of an offline sandbox for Wikipedia
starters. Developing countries need those especially in areas with little,
or no stable internet connection.

[Wikitech-l] Offline Sandbox, IP address limit, etc.

2012-07-02 Thread Butch Bustria
Hello Everyone,

Good day!

When we had our first official out of town outreach project in Naga City,
about 300 km south of Manila, we encountered a problem when 50+ students,
librarians and professors attempt to create an account with the Bikol
Wikipedia. Apparently it only allows 6 applications per IP in 24 hours.

Is there a creative way to have not experience the same issue in our future
outreach projects? Say one school has one public IP address but many
attempt to register?

Another, we would like to ask if we can have a possibility to have an
client software that can perform to do sandbox editing for those who wants
to learn to edit Wikipedia but offline?

There will be places we would visit that has computers with no stable
internet connection but willing to contribute to Wikipedia. Say edit and
export it as xml and then upload that article in Wikipedia in bulk?

Your inputs are valuable to us.
