2024-07-08 Thread Suhler, Jayne
Welcome Emma! What an impressive background you have.

And, Laurel, what a lovely tribute to Bob this photo album is; thank you for
sending. I saw Bob play Hamlet back in 2005 when James brought the summer class
to SMU for a one-night production of the play (you remember!). The play was
wonderful and Bob was already beloved, thriving under James’ leadership.

Subject: [Winedale-l] Our new Program Coordinator and a request or two

Hello all!

We are entering our fifth week at Winedale. Things are going well--we have a
hard-working group. Though no former students are in the class, our former Camp
Shakespeare students, Noelle Alexander and Sophie Steinhauser, have helped set
the standard and pace for our work. The students are throwing themselves into
the plays and making discoveries hourly.

Please let me introduce Emma Watkins, who is copied here. She is the new
Program Coordinator for Shakespeare at Winedale. Emma just graduated with an
MFA in playwriting from UT's Department of Theatre and Dance. She also holds a
BA in English, Theatre, and Environmental Studies from Princeton University. As
a Fulbright Fellow, she received her MA in Welsh and Celtic Studies from
Cardiff University.

Emma hit the ground running and came to Winedale on July 4th to help with the
festivities. She has never participated in Shakespeare at Winedale as a student
but is eager to meet you all and hear stories from the past 54 years. You will
have the chance to meet her under the tent in front of the Theatre Barn when
you come to see our performances.

I'd like for those of you with digital pics of Bob Jones to share them with us.
Our summer performances will be dedicated to James but we want to honor Bob
Jones as well and I would love to have pictures of him for the vestibule.

Much love and thanks to you all. Sharing your notes with the students on their
arrival was a big success and I'm grateful to all those that answered the call.

Also, a huge thanks to Doc, and Jeff and Will Larsen for helping with our
workday at the Theatre Barn. Their work creating a new tool space in the barn
helped us launch new projects.

David and Mike, will you please add Emma to the various listservs?

I'm in the dining hall at Winedale watching the wind from Beryl blow the rain
sideways. We are safe and well and enjoying the lovely snacks that so many of
you have shared.

Enough, hold or cut bow-strings.

xo,
Madge

You know a person's character by the way they treat their dogs, and Jose
treated his like royalty, including his fat pit bull Tinkerbell. He made me
laugh out loud and I’m filled with a deep sadness that he's gone. Jayne P.S.
Didn’t he drag a mattress from one of the beds into the closet in ‘15? Voila. A

2019-11-13 Thread Suhler, Jayne
We are in California and I am very sorry to miss. If there is a way to Zoom in,
please let us know. Missing everyone. Jayne

Subject: [Winedale-l] November 30 Reunion-Planning Gathering at Winedale

I’m writing to remind everyone that the reunion-planning session is a go.
Saturday, November 30, at Winedale. Arrival time: 10:00 a.m. Departure: (a
guess) 2:30 p.m. This far I’ve heard YES from Clayton S., Lynn Mc, Jenny J-P,
Mike G, Lavonne C, Jerald H, Robert Stevens, Angela B, Alice G, Kathy B, Jeff
L.

And as well, some HOPEFULLY YESSES from Mary C, Ann E, Idalia V, and Terry G.
I’d like to hear confirmation from the latter group.

Of course, James Loehlin will be coming, Madge, myself, and JoAnn.

I will be contacting some of the former Camp Shakespeareans about attending as
well.

Anyway, if you have not written earlier and can make the journey, please let me
know this week. Thanks.

I will have Mercantile fix sandwiches and stuff for lunch. I’ll let you know
the tax for that at the meeting.

Hope to hear from you!

Cheers,

Doc

Re: [Winedale-l] Reunion.

2019-06-17 Thread Suhler, Jayne
What Maggie said. My head is spinning from all the wonderful ideas. Wouldn’t it
be something to see each year represented in some way large or small. “Best of”
scenes? A favorite song? (um, except that would be Barnacle Bill for ’86.)

Half the fun is in the planning. Pleasure and action make the hours seem short!

Madgie, please keep me posted, too, about a brainstorming session in Austin. I
will drive down.

Dear Colleagues,

Liz Fisher, the Shakespeare at Winedale production coordinator, has been
selected to receive one of the 2018 Princess Grace Awards. The Princess Grace
Foundation, established by Prince Ranier of Monaco in his wife’s memory, gives
grants and scholarships to support emerging artists in theatre, dance, and
film. The scholarship will help Liz pursue her MFA in Theatre at Texas State
University, while she continues to work with the English Department and
Shakespeare at Winedale.

Liz is one of nine winners in the theatre category this year for her work in
directing. She will receive her award from the current Princess of Monaco at a
Gala in New York on October 16th. Other winners this year come from places
like the Yale School of Drama, NYU, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, so Liz
is in distinguished company. Past Princess Grace winners in theatre have
included Tony Kushner, Oscar Isaac, and Leslie Odom Jr..

Here’s a link to a press release about the awards:

Please congratulate Liz if you see her in the hallway!

I like sweet Maggie’s idea of finding some extra time if that’s possible for
some or all. Should we also consider “best of” scenes again? We did that in ’05
and it was a lot of fun. Gives everyone a chance to do big things and small,
and stretch and pull. May also be a way to bring in more people, young and old.

Re: [Winedale-l] Documentary on W.S.

2017-05-22 Thread Suhler, Jayne
She's right about the witches in Macbeth. The witches aren't in it as much as
you'd expect; quite a lot of it's about ordinary murder. Seems a shame to
introduce witches and then make all the murders normal with just knives and
swords. Maybe if Shakespeare had thought a bit harder...

Shakespeare

Agreed - don't watch while eating drinking.

Sweet, sweet Gail,

I have lost your email in a computer crash, if you are reading this, know that
my thoughts and love are with you.

Thinking of you and your grief, Peter’s lines from Romeo and Juliet keep
running through my head: “Musicians, O musicians, “Heart’s Ease,” “Heart’s
Ease.” O, an you will have me live, play “Heart’s Ease.”

May your full and breaking heart find ease.

Love,

Stan

Dear Friends,

Our Titania from last summer's reunion has lost her real-life Oberon. Gail
McDonald's husband, Russ McDonald, passed away today in London, after suffering
a stroke earlier this week. Russ is a renowned Shakespearean and Renaissance
scholar and teacher; for the last several years he was Professor of English
Literature at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Doc and I (Mary Collins) have spoken to Gail this week. She will be greatly
buoyed by hearing from her Winedale friends via email.

During the week, she said many lovely things about Russ. She mentioned his
being joyful, generous, vivid, smart. She feels a little bit of peace
thinking about how many people benefited from his being alive, how many his
life touched: students, readers, colleagues. She talked about his helping
people see the world through his eyes, as a teacher and writer. She loves the
way he saw the world, his optimism and joy, his love of beauty. He had an
artist's attention to detail when reading poetry and explaining it.

He was a wonderful, wonderful man.

Love,
Mary

Re: [Winedale-l] Name Plaques on the New Chairs in the Theater Barn

2016-03-14 Thread Suhler, Jayne
This is great news, Doc! And I know more is being rounded up behind the scenes
even now.

Reminder to all, and a quick pitch: the James B. “Doc” Ayres fund is from and
by all of us. We just put a little dough in to pad the bottom – it needs more.
The goal is to get money to Doc especially for scholarships for kids who
wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford to participate in Camp Shakespeare.

Outreach is also an awesome program and Clayton is a gift to the kids he
teaches in Austin. And, obviously, the Shakespeare at Winedale general fund:
James needs that to keep our beloved program going, now and always.

So get out yer checkbooks and mark your chair. Pay it forward. It’s all good.

Subject: Name Plaques on the New Chairs in the Theater Barn

In my earlier letter, I invited your support for Camp Shakespeare ’16 and also
for chair-back name plates for the new (and very comfortable) cushioned chairs
in the Theater Barn. Two things. When actually they are one. By purchasing a
plaque—at $300 each--you have your choice of supporting Camp Shakespeare,
Shakespeare at Winedale, or Shakespeare Outreach. The plaques cost only about $
20.00 or so. The balance goes to the program of your choice. By my
figuring—240 chairs—we have the potential of raising $72,000. What part of
that comes to Camp Shakespeare is up to donors. But whatever does, will go
into the endowment in my name initiated by Jayne and Rick Suhler, for Camp
Shakespeare.

In one week after announcing this, I already have pledges for 33 chairs for
Camp Shakespeare! That’s $9.900 already! And James students and the friends
have pledged 15 or so more chairs for Shakespeare at Winedale. So things are
moving along! Thanks for considering this. When the list grows to 100, I will
send everyone the list of donors and honorees. That is, if the donors approve.

Have a very happy Spring Break.

Doc

Only a tiny fraction (.25 percent) of K-12 schools in the U.S. are designated
Blue Ribbon. Parents in Dallas have slept in tents to be in line for transfer
seats at the handful of schools here that have received the award over the
years. What Clayton’s school has achieved is remarkable and his contributions
can be traced directly to the award. All this is a nice way of saying CLAYTON

Thanks y'all — a pretty neat group of kids, they actually cheered this

see Fred Cantu and his cameraman in the little “theater room” built over the
summer and eagerly volunteered for their turn at Bernardo, Francisco, et al.

Very impressive and heartening what’s going on at Blackshear; next door to us
in the dance studio, I saw a class of first graders in socks lining up on their
tippytoes for ballet lessons. I’m so glad the principal, Betty Jenkins, is
receiving this Blue Ribbon recognition for her determination to make the school
the first Fine Arts Magnet at the elementary level in the district. It’s a
remarkable sea change from the atmosphere of even a decade ago — when arts were
tossed aside the moment scores dipped — and I hope this award will give other
elementary-level administrators in low-income communities the courage and
incentive to make the arts an integral part of their students’ day.

Especially sweet since I was run off from Blackshear 16 years ago largely for
doing Shakespeare with my classes when I should have been drilling them for the
TAAS test…!
