[WISPA] Need recommendations for a licensed backhaul link
Hi all, I have a consulting client that needs to do a 28 mile shot in licensed with throughput of up to 45meg. I am looking for any recommendations for something that is relatively inexpensive ($15,000 or less) and would require no larger than 4 foot dishes. Any sales droids out there, feel free to hit me offlist. This would be the first of ten or so of these links that would need to be deployed. Thanks! RE: [WISPA] Industry failings
One thing that you must understand, this is a completely different type of business model The Winstar/FiberTower/etc model is wall street play; keep in mind, while the business may fail miserably, it's worth noting that the original founders / VCs generally end up doing quite well Case in point, a buddy of mine just got funding...before, he had a nicely cash-flowing WISP (~$100k MRC) -- and he still had room to grow on his network -- however, under the realization that it wasn't of any scale to sell for big money, he has recently sold out to a VC firm for $3 million. Now that he's got the in his checking account, he has to spend it building new towers / expanding just for show -- even though he could easily triple his revenue on existing towers / infrastructure alone. However, his goal is to sell on hype to a big carrier / telco / etc in the near future -Charles --- WiNOG Wireless Roadshows Coming to a City Near You http://www.winog.com -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Dustin Jurman Sent: Tuesday, December 05, 2006 7:27 PM To: 'WISPA General List' Subject: RE: [WISPA] Industry failings Importance: High Well I guess we all learned something different from Winstar. I can think of a bunch of other things, I surely have never thought that a 10 year ROI was a valuable lesson to be learned from them when they clearly made more grave mistakes. As far as American Tower is concerned, Fantastic! To have a tower company in your back pocket, we'd all kill for that one. Funny thing is I haven't seen them on very many American sites, but I have seen them on everyone else's. Doesn't matter where I am at, I'm always looking up and counting equipment hanging in the air. I've seen a lot of good and a lot of bad. I also make it a point to speak with everyone going in and out of tower sites and the local groups that support them. Like I said, I run into these guys quite a bit at a lot of different sites. Time will tell how they monetize the network. I'm just pointing out that a lot of folks in this industry have a very different viewpoint on fibertower, and they can do a lot of good for legitimizing the industry which I believe was the original intent. We'd probably do things a little differently, maybe not. Here is what I do know. WinStar's plan assumed a 10 year ROI on a site. In hindsight that seems rather foolish now, but back then they convinced people it made sense. 2. They seem to have very good dealings with all of the tower companies which gets them bulk pricing, reduced costs, etc.. American Tower is a major shareholder, so this should be expected. 6. Look how many sites they have built in a year. It's sick... Look how few they have monetized. It's sick... 7. We all know that once you build a site it takes some time to monetize them, they seem a little behind but maybe not. Very behind! 8. Wall street will keep feeding them as long as they are executing, and they are doing a good job of that. Who says they are executing? Good installs, good equipment, lots of sites built, and happy customers are all important things, but none of them mean they are executing well. They actually need to execute against their business plan, which includes things like cash flow and profitability. Both currently stink. -Matt -- WISPA Wireless List: wireless@wispa.org Subscribe/Unsubscribe: http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless Archives: http://lists.wispa.org/pipermail/wireless/ -- WISPA Wireless List: wireless@wispa.org Subscribe/Unsubscribe: http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless Archives: http://lists.wispa.org/pipermail/wireless/ -- WISPA Wireless List: wireless@wispa.org Subscribe/Unsubscribe: http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless Archives: http://lists.wispa.org/pipermail/wireless/
RE: [WISPA] Need recommendations for a licensed backhaul link
You're asking for a pretty tall order unless there is a new frequency band and/or product newly available I'm unaware of. 28 miles reliably (relative term) can probably only be obtained with 6GHz, but 6GHz requires a minimum 6' antenna per FCC rules. You might be able to get an exception to the antenna size depending on the location of the link. What level of service are you trying to achieve? If you want a ds3 38 gig link I've got one sitting in my office though. 2 or 3 miles is all it'll be good for though :-). laters, Marlon (509) 982-2181 Equipment sales (408) 907-6910 (Vonage)Consulting services 42846865 (icq)And I run my own wisp! 64.146.146.12 (net meeting) www.odessaoffice.com/wireless www.odessaoffice.com/marlon/cam - Original Message - From: Charles Wu [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'WISPA General List' wireless@wispa.org Sent: Wednesday, December 06, 2006 5:25 AM Subject: RE: [WISPA] Need recommendations for a licensed backhaul link Hi Matt, We'll be in touch -Charles --- Sales Droid =/ --- WiNOG Wireless Roadshows Coming to a City Near You http://www.winog.com -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Matt Larsen - Lists Sent: Wednesday, December 06, 2006 2:00 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; WISPA General List; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [WISPA] Need recommendations for a licensed backhaul link Hi all, I have a consulting client that needs to do a 28 mile shot in licensed with throughput of up to 45meg. I am looking for any recommendations for something that is relatively inexpensive ($15,000 or less) and would require no larger than 4 foot dishes. Any sales droids out there, feel free to hit me offlist. This would be the first of ten or so of these links that would need to be deployed. Thanks! [WISPA] NOLA Wireless
Private Sector Anchors New Orleans Telecom Revival Written By: Steven Titch Published In: ITT News Publication Date: December 1, 2006 Publisher: The Heartland Institute http://www.heartland.org/Article.cfm?artId=20216 New Orleans officials have announced they will shut down the city’s municipal wireless network to avoid interference problems with EarthLink, which has been constructing a second, more widespread WiFi network under a city contract awarded in May. The city system, which had been operating at 300 kb/s, slower than conventional WiFi, had been available for free. The decision, coming in the face of more than $1 billion in private investment and new fiber and wireless build-out in New Orleans, ends more than a year of effort by the city government to take a competitive role in the rebuilding of the city’s telecom network. Like much of the city’s infrastructure, the telecommunications network suffered massive damage in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. In addition to hundreds of poles and miles of copper lines, BellSouth, the city’s local exchange carrier, lost 34 central offices, nine of which were completely destroyed. The city courted controversy when Mayor C. Ray Nagin announced plans to use the emergency wireless system as a springboard to develop a free citywide municipal wireless service, a move that would have required a change in Louisiana law. BellSouth opposed the idea for fear it would discourage private investment. In March, city officials, speaking to USA Today, accused BellSouth of attempting to shut down the city wireless service, a charge the company denied. Exchanges grew less heated after Nagin backed down from the municipal plan, choosing instead to award a city contract to EarthLink, which plans to spend some $15 million over the next three years on the new wireless network. The company agreed to continue free service for a limited time. Meanwhile, BellSouth is investing $1 billion in the rebuilding effort, which includes replacing 100,000 copper pairs that connect homes and businesses to the network. The lost central office switches have been replaced with up-to-date gigabit Ethernet switches and routers, which will be able to support fiber-to-the-home platforms, according to Network World, an industry newspaper. BellSouth is also setting up a “pre-WiMax” service for area businesses. At the same time, Verizon has replaced aerial fiber routes acquired in the MCI deal with new buried routes. It also had to replace several signal regeneration facilities. Steven Titch ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) is senior fellow for IT and telecom policy for The Heartland Institute and managing editor of ITT News. [WISPA] Electronically Stored Information In Litigation Rules

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. - Over the last week or so there have been a number of articles about new rules related to litigation, portending that there could be punishments for undertaking routine computer backups or destroying legacy data from obsolete systems. Don’t panic! [WISPA] 30 miles on a VAGI???
We did an install today... Started it yesterday, but had no signal, where we could see location for our AP at 11 miles. Turned out to be a bad dipole in the grid, but today, we went back, and of course, with a bad dipole we had to switch antennas... The only other antenna that was in the van was a VAGI (and it's at least a half hour's drive one way back to get another antenna), so we put it up. I wasn't on the roof, so I didn't see the actual path, but from appearances, the chimney was sorta sideswiped and I think created some multipath, becuase our signal level at the AP was bouncing wildly from 9 to 13, which is real low, and no amount of aiming could improve it. So, we swung the VAGI 90 degrees, pointed at another access point that's 29.7 (or something like that, using Google Earth's measuring) miles away... I've got 18 db margin at the AP, and 14 db at the client end (-81 client, -77 AP ). The AP is one our bird frying sectors, WRAP board running Star-OS and CM9. The client is a Compex WP54 board, running Ikarus and a CM9. Ikarus limit for ack timing is 50KM, and our measurement says we're at 48 KM. But, it works fine, and repeated tests show the throughput well exceeds the customer's sold 2M connectivity, with 20ms ping times while transferring 2.3mbit steady state. Now who was it said you gotta have amps to go the distance? +++ neofast.net - fast internet for North East Oregon and South East Washington email me at mark at neofast dot net 541-969-8200 Direct commercial inquiries to purchasing at neofast dot net -- WISPA Wireless List: wireless@wispa.org Subscribe/Unsubscribe: http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless Archives: http://lists.wispa.org/pipermail/wireless/
Re: [WISPA] Electronically Stored Information In Litigation Rules
Here is a handy link to a PDF whitepaper on the new E-discovery rules - http://tinyurl.com/htarf Below is a section that may dispell the FUD. Rule 37 — Failure to Make Disclosure or Cooperate in Discovery; Sanctions: New subsection 37(f) is added which states, in full, Absent exceptional circumstances, a court may not impose sanctions under these rules on a party for failing to provide electronically stored information lost as a result of routine, good-faith operation of an electronic information system. The Advisory Committee Notes explain that the premise for this amendment is that ordinary computer use necessarily involves routine alteration and deletion of information for reasons unrelated to litigation.
