Hi,

We currently provide DSL service using Qwest. We are a "megahost"
provider, meaning we have a DS3 directly to Qwest, and then we can sell DSL
circuits using our bandwidth, etc.

In the past, we have been able to "bond" multiple DSL lines using a Cisco
router on the customer side and then using Cisco's CEF protocol.
This provides a true bonded connection, because it does a "per packet"
load balance.

Is there a better solution? I have to use a Cisco on our NOC side, but I
would prefer to find something cheaper. Any ideas on what protocol may work?
MLPPP or ?

We are using a routed backbone with Mikrotik's OSPF. We have Mikrotik
working without problems with product from ImageStream, Cisco, and Juniper.
I haven't tried anything MPLS yet, we've been too busy to experiment with
it.

The only troubles I've ran into with Mikrotik OSPF has been the occasional
reboot required when we have a backhaul link flapping constantly, as well as
some problems with some redundant customer routing. We have several
customers that are paying extra for redundant links, we are giving them a
/30 and installing a Mikrotik router with OSPF running. We've had a time or
two where our normal traffic would route through their connection instead of
our backbone(not sure why), but that was fixed when we started filtering the
advertised routes.

I don't remember who it was, but about two years ago I visited with a WISP
that was running several thousand customers on a bridged network (STP IIRC).
They were using the MAC dst-nat functionality to forward all broadcasts to
their PPPoE server at one end of the network, they said it was working very
well for them.

Routed is the way to go. Think of this, the internet is routed, why
should you not be..

I support hundreds of networks running RouterOS most with dynamic

Re: [WISPA] How many switches can do RSTP?

2009-01-23 Thread Nathan Stooke
Hello,

Yes our core is running MPLS. We us Mikrotik routers so it does not
coast use a huge amount. They also have anew virtual router that allows you
to take 1 box and put 2 or more routers on it. We have a MPLS core router
and a Edge router at each main tower on our ring. This did save use a about
50% because we did not have to buy the second router.

Thanks

Hi Nathan,

it could be a solution, but:

1) the only product I found interesting it CISCO ME switch with MPLS.
Any other suggestion welcome.
2) cost per site goes really high for the backbone. If we would like to
implement MPLS in each site, it would cost us a fortune.
3) Still wondering about maturity or many MPLS implementations, not sure
the brands that really work and the ones which does not.

Suggestions welcome ;)

P.S. are you using MPLS?

Re: [WISPA] How many switches can do RSTP?

2009-01-23 Thread Paolo Di Francesco
Mixed 2.9.X/3.X, yes running the "right one" routing pack (it was much
worse with the "stable pack").

1) OSPF default route goes lost time to time, so some nodes get but of
the network
2) sometimes OSPF does not communicate some routes (the neighbor is
there but the route is not appearing, it should be working but it's not)
3) OSPF does not work with BGP Openbgp implementation (default route
goes lost, it looks like mikrotik thing, not nice when the traffic on
the edge is not going anywhere and more or less the whole network is down)
4) memory leakage in some versions, so we have to remind to reboot the
devices time to time
5) other minor bugs here and there (this morning we had a strange thing
the route should be there but the router was not getting it from the
neighbor)

Maybe we are just not lucky or we have too many flapping links.

Re: [WISPA] bonding

2009-01-23 Thread Randy Cosby
MLPPP should work, we're also getting ready to test that. We normally
do PPPOA on the DSL router, but a bridged connection with PPPOE on a
separate device behind the DSL modems should work as well.

Another half-baked thought:

Could you use Cisco's bridge-group feature to map the vpi/vci to an
ethernet vlan subinterface, then do whatever you want on your end -
Cisco CEF, mlppp, mikrotik bonding, whatever? I need to look into this
too.

Have you seen the company that is specializing in this,
PipeDreamNetworks.com ? They called me the other day to ask about
testing their solution with us.

Re: [WISPA] How many switches can do RSTP?

2009-01-23 Thread eje
Just curious what issues do you see, what version are you using. Running the
experimental routing package? Are you using MikroTik only or are you exchanging
OSPF routing with other devices? I used OSPF and mikotik for a long time and
except for a few bad revisions it has been rock solid.

Hi Travis

to be honest mikrotik routing is not working well, and we are far from
being happy about the OSPF implementation: too many bugs and lost routes.
So, I would like to move to something more robust. Mikrotik MPLS
implementation looks more at experimental stage and I would not use it
for any reason in any production network. Maybe I am wrong and it's
really stable, so if somebody is using mikrotik-MPLS let us know it!

Thank you.

Re: [WISPA] bonding

2009-01-23 Thread Larry A Weidig
Travis:
We have a similar setup with AT&T on their network as you have
with Qwest. We are able to use Mikrotik and MlPPPoE to created bonded
connections through 2 or more DSL links for sites that require
additional bandwidth. I believe though this is something that needs to
be supported/setup by the LAC's that the DSL links connect into before
the traffic is tunneled over to you. We also then needed to allow
multilink in the virtual-template profile (Cisco) for the account and
setup Radius to allow multi-link for the account. This is the case for
us and now that it is setup is VERY simple to do.

Hi,

We currently provide DSL service using Qwest. We are a "megahost"
provider, meaning we have a DS3 directly to Qwest, and then we can sell
DSL circuits using our bandwidth, etc.

In the past, we have been able to "bond" multiple DSL lines using a
Cisco router on the customer side and then using Cisco's CEF protocol.
This provides a true bonded connection, because it does a "per packet"
load balance.

Is there a better solution? I have to use a Cisco on our NOC side, but I

would prefer to find something cheaper. Any ideas on what protocol may
work? MLPPP or ?

Travis,

I have done lots of research on the MLPPP solution, and tried various
configs,
if you get it working, please let me know.
We also are setup the same, except to at&t, and also use the CEF solution,
however..

We also have used the xincom twin routers. They work pretty good, for a
balancing solution, not so much as a bonding solution. www.xincom.com

If you find a better solution, please let me know.

Re: [WISPA] How many switches can do RSTP?

2009-01-23 Thread Paolo Di Francesco
Hi Travis

to be honest mikrotik routing is not working well, and we are far from
being happy about the OSPF implementation: too many bugs and lost routes.
So, I would like to move to something more robust. Mikrotik MPLS
implementation looks more at experimental stage and I would not use it
for any reason in any production network. Maybe I am wrong and it's
really stable, so if somebody is using mikrotik-MPLS let us know it!

Thank you.

[WISPA] bonding

2009-01-23 Thread Travis Johnson

Any ideas on what protocol may
work? MLPPP or ?

Mikrotik now supports MPLS. So any routerboard should work fine,
depending on how much traffic you need to move.

I did not find anywhere the maximum number and wondering if the backbone
collapse after 10 or 100 or 1000 switches.
Also wondering what do you advice, I know that not all the switches are
the same... (thinking about HP for this application)

Thank you in advance.

Re: [WISPA] Employee Tracking Program

Hello,

We have also used http://www.endian.com/en/. At the time, about 8
months ago, untangle was kind of picky as to what hardware it would work
with. I do not know if that is still the case. We chose to use endian and
love it. We are rolling out a network wide one for our hotspots.

Thanks

I just wanted to follow up for those that are interested. I included
the original email below, but I will summarize. I was asked to find a
way to log where employees are going on the internet. I took the many
suggestions of NTop, PRTG, using NetFlow data and a reporting server,
etc. They worked, but not exactly the simple reporting the employer
wanted. What I stumbled across is a program called "Untangle." It is a
unix load and very nicely done http://www.untangle.com. Very secure.
It is a transparent bridge that also does firewalling and is a content
firewall. I loaded it onto a 1U old Dell server they retired. We
turned all of the blocking rules to log, so it was totally transparent
to the users. It logs where each workstation went on the internet for
about 2 months. Now that they have collected the information, they have
confronted the employees and at least made it public they were being
watched. Then turned it onto blocking the sites they were wasting time.
It also now blocks the spyware that was running rampant on their
network.

Best of all, Untangle is free, and open source. There are other "Pay
For" devices like Barracuda Web (310) is similar, but is routinely
maintained. They are also great products. Once this server outlives
its life, they will probably move up to the Barracuda for better
reporting and constant updates.

Anyone that does want more information, I can send screenshots and/or
answer questions should they arise later.

I have a company that would like to track real-time and summary
information of internet activity of it's employees (by IP). They are
looking for summary information, not email content/instant messenger
chats/passwords. What would be ideal would be a passive device that
acts like a sniffer that either hits layer 7 and reads the
www.xx.com from the data portion of the packets, or just looks at
the DNS traffic, tracks IPs and reports it. Maybe even amount of
bandwidth spent at each IP... or something of that nature.

Any ideas? I have recommended software that is a keylogger and
recorder, but they want something that is totally transparent, i.e.
sniffer.

Thanks,

If you have that many a routed network would be much simpler.

Any ideas on the limit of stp devices, though?

[WISPA] How many switches can do RSTP?

2009-01-23 Thread Paolo Di Francesco
Dear All

I am wondering how many switches can be put together in a bridged
environment (via radio-bridges) with the Rapid STP. Just curious because
I did not find anywhere the maximum number and wondering if the backbone
collapse after 10 or 100 or 1000 switches.
Also wondering what do you advice, I know that not all the switches are
the same... (thinking about HP for this application)

Thank you in advance.

I use untangle at many of the companies that I manage. Makes my job easier,
and makes their employees more productive.

FYI there's also a semi-official hack (information is on their forum:
forums.untangle.com) about how to install ntop reporting as well.
Hopefully that as well as more detailed reporting will be included in
future releases. I participated in the recent Astaro beta and that
really spoiled me. It has much better reporting (by user, by domain,
etc) and the content filtering is better and more stable in my opinion
but it's very expensive to buy. So I run Untangle here.

I just wanted to follow up for those that are interested. I included the

log where employees are going on the internet. I took the many suggestions
of NTop, PRTG, using NetFlow data and a reporting server, etc. They worked,
but not exactly the simple reporting the employer wanted. What I stumbled
across is a program called "Untangle." It is a unix load and very nicely
done http://www.untangle.com. Very secure.
It is a transparent bridge that also does firewalling and is a content
firewall. I loaded it onto a 1U old Dell server they retired. We turned
all of the blocking rules to log, so it was totally transparent to the
users. It logs where each workstation went on the internet for about 2
months. Now that they have collected the information, they have confronted
the employees and at least made it public they were being watched. Then
turned it onto blocking the sites they were wasting time.
It also now blocks the spyware that was running rampant on their network.

Best of all, Untangle is free, and open source. There are other "Pay For"
devices like Barracuda Web (310) is similar, but is routinely maintained.
They are also great products. Once this server outlives its life, they will
probably move up to the Barracuda for better reporting and constant updates.

Anyone that does want more information, I can send screenshots and/or answer

It is a transparent bridge that also does firewalling and is a content

turned all of the blocking rules to log, so it was totally transparent
to the users. It logs where each workstation went on the internet for
about 2 months. Now that they have collected the information, they have
confronted the employees and at least made it public they were being
watched. Then turned it onto blocking the sites they were wasting time.
It also now blocks the spyware that was running rampant on their

Best of all, Untangle is free, and open source. There are other "Pay

[WISPA] 3.65GHz Redline BH

2009-01-23 Thread 3-dB Networks
Does anyone have the spec sheet? I see one on their website but its marked
preliminary. hoping they had something a bit more complete.

Maybe someone can help answer a few questions for me:

What is the max throughput roughly per channel size?

What type of range are these things getting?

Thanks!
