I guess some clarification is probably needed on the definition of Wholesale
and Bandwidth.

For example, is Comcast willing to route your IPs and do BGP and such, just
like any other upstream transit provider?
Or are they just willing to sell you a high capacity discount Comcast
service?
Are you looking to get Comcast to the end user's premise, or trying to get a

Re: [WISPA] Comcast Bandwidth

2009-04-13 Thread Tom DeReggi
Well, Comcast typically does not provide their own transit, they buy transit
from others. There are reasons for that, for example because they may buy
effectively since they do mostly download and provide little content, or to
stay focused on their core competency which is not transit. That does not
mean they couldn't or don't have a model to sell transport. For example, Cox
sells wholesale transport bandwidth. But there is little motive for them to
give you a good price, when you are in competition to them. I'd argue
anywhere you'd want to pick up a connection from them, where they'd sell it
to you, you'd probably have options from other companies for a better price.
But not my place to speak for them.

Re: [WISPA] Anyone have trouble with customers batching credit cardpayments?

2009-04-13 Thread Eric Rogers
Do they happen to have a managed switch or do you have a managed switch
you can temporarily put in to prove it is not your service? I would
check the error counters on the interface and be SURE it isn't wiring in
their facility. The best thing you can do to trouble-shoot is to break
everything down into small "systems" and test each piece until you find
the culprit.

I don't know how your wireless network is set up, but even if you are
using PPPoE, I am sure you set up the MTU to the correct number. It
could be that you need to change the MTU on the device, but it would
error every time, not intermittently.

You might put a static IP on their connection and get PingPlotter and
find out the packet loss at different times of the day to their exact
location and see if you see anything going on at the end of day.

Good luck,

on our network. The credit card software company has upgraded the
software etc and says it's a problem with their Internet. Thought I

This is not supported. For this to work the interface would have to be
capable of replicating all the digital PBX signals from end to end
(digital phone to PBX port). Currently only analog PSTN replication is
supported or pure VoIP. Digital PBX systems (non-VoIP) do not fall
under either category. The closest you can do to replicate this
functionality is to use a single line analog station port from a PBX
to allow for star codes and such to be forwarded through a standard
PSTN single line phone back to the PBX. To do what you are requesting
using a PBX digital phone would require a new interface design that
has not been built. This is likely possible if you want it bad enough.
There may even be a market for such an interface. The maker of the
digital PBX may even be willing to work with you on such functionality
if they have enough call for this themselves. When you find your
solution please share. I have struggled with how best to tie into my
old PBX also and welcome feedback and how you skin this cat. I will
likely build a complete new VoIP based PBX to solve it on my end. I
have been wanting to learn more about VoIP anyway and this just seems
to be the best way to do it. Nothing like eating your own dog food if
you want to learn something! :-)

Seriously, that's what I'm using right now, and it works "well enough"
for almost everything we do here. If you're trying to block P2P traffic,
say, it catches most things. Doesn't (yet) detect and flag encrypted
BitTorrent traffic, but you can spot that by looking at all the little
teensy packets, and shut the user off by-hand (or maybe set up some sort
of throttler based on packets-per-second, but I've always seen that
cause more problems than it solves).

Re: [WISPA] Towers....

2009-04-13 Thread Eric Rogers
I would also agree this company is great to deal with. I have a 190'
NSX tower and it has worked for my little ISP. However, with the
positive that it does work just like Bob says, they are not solid-rod
towers like Valmont, so the life is yet to be determined. They are
hot-dipped electro-galvanized (better coating) vs the old-fashioned way
of just galvanizing, but because they are hollow, they can rust from the
inside out. I hope this investment lasts like most of the 30+ yr old
MCI and AT&T microwave towers have held up, but I have my doubts. So
far so good. 2 1/2 years on it and it still has little to no rust on
the outside.

Just wanted to post a quick plug here for Nello Towers.

If any of you guys or gals is considering buying a tower or towers you
should consider these guys. We have been installing tower stuff for
years and and I can't remember the last time I didn't have to pull out a

mag drill, torch, come-a-long, sledgehammer or some other tool or device

to make a tower go together. we just installed a 100' freestanding
Nello NSX tower for a customer and every single hole lined up perfectly,

the instructions were straight forward, everything was labeled and color

coded, and there was even a box that said "SPARE HARDWARE" Holy
Crap! Imagine that!!! A freakin' tower dog's miracle moment. we put
the tower together and hung it in one day without issue. And we were not

short ANYTHING.

We have a second one to do and I can honestly say I am looking forward
to it.

Now I have no relationship with this company and I don't make anything
from them. But I know what a nightmare putting some of these together
can be like for someone with experience. Can't imagine a novice trying
it. Anyone looking for some fun should buy five 100' Super Trylon towers

from Tessco and try putting them together with the instructions off the
web site. Took us 4 weeks especially when we realized we had all kinds
of parts missing. And the shipping was a killer because Tessco makes
its own kits and crates each individual section in nice heavy wood
crates. 10 sections, 10 crates. We had enough wood left over to build a

4 bedroom house! :-)

Just an FYI.

Bob

Re: [WISPA] VOIP Adapter for digital PBX over wireless

2009-04-13 Thread Patrick Nix Jr.
What we are looking for is not really a converter, but an adapter that just
extends one extension out of say a punch block over wireless to a remote
office. So that they could plug in one of their digital phones into it and
have a live extension.

Any suggestions for a reliable inexpensive point to point voip adapter
that will carry a digital phone extension across wireless to a remote
office. Here's the scenario: A manufacturing environment needs to
extend a phone extension out to a guard shack. The wireless network is
already in place, and they are currently extending an analog extension
there using multitech voip gateway. Any suggestions for exchanging this
for something that will handle digital

We have an MTU that we buy bandwidth from Comcast for. We were buying
from Covad, but Verizon is running out of lines at that location and
they kept disconnecting us. So we went with Comcast.

You can contact their MTU/MDU division. Call the business number and ask
to be transfered there. I can give you my sales guys name. Probably
different person in your area, but might help get you the right person.

Contact me off list.

No its not an unrealistic goal, if the business model is low margin

There can be much less maintenance with building a business model
 on a
smaller number of business subs, making it not necessary to get
 that much
 per sub.
For example, We'll sell 10Mhz of spectrum for $1000/month, to a
 single
customer. Where that will only yield us $2000 per sectors, its also
 only 2
 customer and locations to support.

I will also say that in competitive served markets, its getting
 harder and
harder to get 100 users on a AP, if in a market thats asking for
 5mbps
 speeds, or > 1mbps uploads. Sure, I've gotten 75 users on a 3mb
 900
sectors, in an unserved market, but that is different that a market
competing with Cable and Fios, for example, where users actually
 expect to
be able to upload with bit torrent, and watch their NetFlix movies.

In my earlier years, I was sold on the fact that low ARPU subs was
 the
better market, because if selling 1mbps services, the
 oversubscription
ratios on 10mb sectors could be much much higher. However, I am
 learning
that the High ARPU higher capacity business, with little over
 subscriptions,
 is proving more profitable.

Its also changes a bit, if wholesale markets are required. Sure if
 you are
the only one in town, onme can stand firm on maximizing the return
 per
 sector, at $5K per sector.
But a reseller won't pay you $5k per sector, they'll building over
 you
instead. Sometimes its worth getting much less per sector, using
 the
reseller, instead of competiing with their interference otherwise.

Yeah, I forgot to mention OpenDNS but you have to set up your router
to block or redirect access to other DNS services. Otherwise they'll
just go right around it.

Another thing about OpenDNS is you will have a record of what bad
sites were attempted, but you can't tell which computer because it's
on the other side of the NAT. Something like Untangle or Astaro will
tell you who, what, where and when.

Untangle, Astaro (free 10 "user" - 10 IP address). Astaro is
professional grade and really nice but it can be hard saying under the
10 IP limit if you have lots of network enabled devices. Untangle is
more consumer grade with a cartoon like interface but it's still
pretty cool.
