Re: [WISPA] MiniPCI Radio Cards

2009-06-19 Thread David Hulsebus
I meant elliptical or air cable, and don't think they manufacture the
Air Heliax cable anymore. After they joined CommScope, they shrunk their
product line quite a bit. I put two runs of the elliptical waveguide on
a tower I own and for the cost wouldn't put it anywhere I didn't expect
to be for a very long time.

I've put in Heliax 1/2" through 1 1/2" cable for 900 and 2.4 I've had
some success with 5.8GHz at less than 100ft, never tried it any further
either though - it's not within Andrews specs. I believe they provide
attenuation data to 2.4 GHz. For 5.8 GHz I use their eliptical Air
Heliax cable, I first inherited some when we purchased an old fm radio
station tower. I almost got their 900MHz 8ft dish too, but they wanted
as a backup for their new tower site as they use it to transmit their
music to the tower from the station about 20 miles away.

Never lost a radio due to rf issues. It is more up front but protects
our more expensive transmitters very well and keeps us from climbing
regularly. I'll put Mikrotik boards on a tower or tank with POE and if I
loose one I'm not out thousands. I use external antennas and lightning

Nope, Didn't work. Using MTv3.17 and found that even though it will so some
sftp, it will not do rsync, or even FISH protocol that works with a vanilla

Re: [WISPA] MiniPCI Radio Cards

2009-06-19 Thread Kurt Fankhauser
Well I am using the 5/8 Heliax on some 5ghz PTP shots only. I have not done
any PTMP stuff with it yet. The loss at 5ghz is about 4.5db/100ft. I know
when I did the PTP shots before when I had the radio's mounted up top I was
using 24db panels and once I switched to the HELIAX and the radio's at the
bottom I changed that side to a 29db 2 foot dish and I actually seen the
signals go up a couple db. I would assume you could use it for PTMP but you
may have to switch to a little higher gain antenna on the client end. But I
would rather have a better client antenna anyway than have to worry about
lightning on the main tower so the benefits outweigh the negatives.

The nice thing with with backhaul radio's being on the ground is if you ever
maxed out a link and needed to move up to some higher throughput radios all
you gotta do is unscrew the coax at the bottom and plug the new radio's in.
:)

You could do it with canopy also if you are using the connectorized 2.4ghz
AP and a vertical omni. I know the Canopy radio's are $1500 so just saving
from 1 lightning hit is more than worth it.

I especially like that last sentence of the 4th Amendment. The framers

Awesome! What about the XR5? Or any 5.8 card for that matter?

We can all agree that this is the better option when you're the one out in
the field, but what about financially? I see that this cable is $600 for
150 feet. At that price if doing it this way saves me from one lightning

2009-06-19 Thread Frank Crawford
I agree with Jack 100% and they can do it within bounds set forth in the
US Constitution and

Amendment IV

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers,
and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be
violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause,
supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place
to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. Its a bad day
when the public believes gov agency's are above the law.

Re: [WISPA] MiniPCI Radio Cards

2009-06-19 Thread Kurt Fankhauser
The 5/8 heliax will work on any freq up to 6.1ghz is the cut-off.
http://www.midland.ru/products/andrew/pdf/LDF45.pdf

The loss on 2.4ghz is low enough that you can make up for it will the higher
powered XR2 cards and the better receive sensitivity off the XR2 helps out
also. The nice thing about the loss on your signals makes the noise floor go
down also. :)

Re: [WISPA] MiniPCI Radio Cards

2009-06-19 Thread John Valenti
Jeremy,

Since you mention StarOS, I have to ask: why not just use the Lucaya
gear?

If you skip the amps, the X2000 would let your climber take up a
replacement radio and change two RF cables and one ethernet cable.
(for two radios)

Just curious why you seem to reject the StarOS preferred hardware?
thanks

FROM THE FCC WEBSITE:

About the FCC

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an independent United
States government agency. The FCC was established by the Communications
Act of 1934 and is charged with regulating interstate and international
communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable. The
FCC's jurisdiction covers the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and
U.S. possessions.

_

In other words -

The FCC has the power to shut down illegal transmitters. It's their job.
It's that simple.

For example, if someone is transmitting on a Fire Department frequency
and jamming the Fire Department's radio system, FCC engineers respond,
they locate the source of the jamming and take the jamming transmitter
off the air. Same thing if someone is jamming an airport control tower
frequency, or any other frequency.

This principle applies to ANY transmitter including licensed
transmitters, unlicensed transmitters and any transmitters, including
those in wireless routers.

Between this (Google acquiring a million phone numbers), and their
announcement a few days ago about their plans to support number
portability, it's almost like Google wants to be a phone company too.

Curiously, I think I might be alright with something like that.

(Aside: Woulda been nice to put in even a brief summary of the article

Re: [WISPA] MT backup system, need script clues

2009-06-19 Thread rabbtux rabbtux
Thanks Scott. I was thinking of something to search out and delete files
with certain extensions. Why not just keep overwriting the old files with
the same name, Doh! I didn't want to collect a zillion files locally.
Will start adding this to my snapshot system shortly...

Josh, I was not searching for backup scripts, but the commands to delete a
specific file type from a mt system. Interesting URL.

That's is what I remember from the list. Once it was in, a 'normal'
subscriber couldn't get it out, and they, MJ, had a subscriber installed,
and "agreed to", OPEN Back Door to any computer it was installed on! We
have a lot of subs with these, and I mention it to them, but they don't seem
to get it. Scary stuff

Re: [WISPA] MT backup system, need script clues

2009-06-19 Thread Scott Reed
Script can backup everything on MT, so I am not sure what you mean by
"email scripts do not." Maybe the scripts you have don't, but they
can. I create about 4 files on some of my routers and e-mail them to
myself. I also have a unix expect script that goes and gets them, so
you can do what ever you want.

Normal command to remove a file from telnet./ssh:
  / file remove filename

Not sure you need that either. If you create a new backup with the same
name every time, it overwrites the old one, just like any other OS.
/sys backup save name=filename

Export is similar. Go to the level to export
export file=filename

If you want to give me specifics off-list about what you want, I can
probably give you the commands you need or put together a script in a
couple of minutes

Re: [WISPA] MT backup system, need script clues

2009-06-19 Thread rabbtux rabbtux
Thanks Brad,
I know all about the MT backup scripts to email, etc. The advantage to this
system is that for a new system to work, I install an ssh key on the MT and
one line on the backup server. This system also backs up all the hotspot
and other files that are on the MT, email scripts do not.

Basically i need the terminal commands to remove the two file types.
Rsnapshot can execute a few commands, just as if you SSHed in to the MT
prior to the sftp backup.

Re: [WISPA] MT backup system, need script clues

2009-06-19 Thread Scott Reed
Normal ftp commands should work. MT is a little different in that files
are not really in directories, they just look like it. I think if you
do a delete with full path and full filename it will work.

You could also write a script on the MT that does everything you want
every night. Then your backup program just sucks up what the router
created. Scripting uses exactly the same command format as the command
line, unless you try to get fancy.

Re: [WISPA] FCC's Warrentless Household Searches Alarm Experts

2009-06-19 Thread Jack Unger

I googled the name, and also googled the name of the product with the
word "sucks" to see what people who don't like the product say when a
friend was interested in the product a few weeks back. Sounds like
it's 2nd rate phone service and poor customer service, about what one
would expect at that price.

All,

I've used the excellent open source backup program, rsnapshot, for years
with good results. I recently noticed that routeros supports sftp. I'd
like to get snapshot backups of all our APs. Here's how it would work:
Rsnapshot can run a few commands on each system before backing up the file
system. I'd like to 1) remove all *.backup and *.rsc files. 2) run a fresh
binary backup, followed by a text export. 3) The normal rsnapshot function
resumes getting a copy of the filesystem.

Just having trouble putting the parts of the pre-run MT script.
Specifically how to delete the existing backup files.

Any Hints appreciated, as everyone could use this 'full seatbelt" backup
solution. It includes daily changes to any file or configuration changes on
each routeros system.

Thanks,
Marshall

Regardless, how can you beat $19.95 for a year and I know that they are

I quickly googled Magic Jack Corporate and didn't get any corporate
info, so I was assuming it was a privately held product.

No stock play there

Re: [WISPA] Magic Jack

2009-06-19 Thread George Rogato
Surprisingly to me, it's kinda caught on so much so that quite a few of
my subs use it.

Lately I was toying with the thought of doing a "Magic Jack" bundle with
my service.

Of course I have my own voip offering through VOX and I'm not sure if it
would take away from that or add to it.

I wonder if offering a low end deal like Magic Jack is going to hurt
OFN's image or help bolster it..

Re: [WISPA] MiniPCI Radio Cards

2009-06-19 Thread Scott Reed
Do the link budgets including cable loss.
XR cards are 600mW cards, so more output than the amps originally proposed.
I have XR cards on the ground, 150' of LMR600 to antennae at the top and
the links all work as predicted.
I just can't see putting any kind of amp at the top when you can do it
all with the card and the proper cable. It is all in the planning.

There is some icky stuff in the EULA and apparently there is no way to
remove it automatically...have to go to the registers to do it properly.

I played with it a while back. Very good stuff, just needs number
portability and a little better support. I know someone who spent nearly

I played with it a while back. Very good stuff, just needs number

Re: [WISPA] MiniPCI Radio Cards

2009-06-19 Thread Kurt Fankhauser
I have done this with LMR400, I ran 150 foot of LMR400 up a tower and put a
250mw amp at the top. With the choosen antenna I was right at 36db power
output. It actually worked very well. Just as good or better than having the
radio's at the top. It was a cheap way to put your radio's on the ground.
BUT the first time the site got a lightning hit again I was screwed :(

So I quickly figured out the cost of replacing amps after 1 hit that I could
have spent the extra money on the LMR900 or 5/8 HELIAX and I would have
actually come out cheaper by not going the amped route.

But the xr5 well outperforms like you said - more so to do with the

This! In the past few months, we've replaced a couple towers with
Mikrotik hardware and software. A few of our towers were amped - I'd
turn down the power on the radio to stay legal, performance would be
okay. I'd make the tower guys pull the amp (which involves a climb, so
they hate me for it...), turn the radio power back up, and get better
performance, better signal from the customers, better noise floor.
Granted, most of the amps are several years old, and new stuff may work
better, but "modern" radio cards can put out enough power that you
likely won't need the amp, and it may even make things worse.

We've been using Mikrotik's R52 and R52H cards (depending on how much
power we need), though recently we tried a Ubiquiti XR2 for one of our
2.4GHz towers and have been thoroughly impressed. It's an expensive
card, relatively speaking (more than double the cost of the R52H), and
we have to turn the power down to stay legal, but it seems to have even
better rx sensitivity than the R52H (which supposedly is the same chipset).

If you're in the midwest US, www.jeffcosoho.com/catalog will have most
of what you need, and they offer a discount to WISPA members.

Yes, I'm aware, and I've built it both ways in the past. I will also
be at least a day away from each of these sites, and want to simplify
the upkeep. I'll have someone on the ground who can troubleshoot the
boards and radio cards, but will not climb. The tower labour will be
mostly unskilled, and swapping three amps with coax connections will
be easier for them.

My first advice is ditch the amp, not necessary and most likely illegal
power. You can get what you need out of the minipci card.

You will want to purchase from US distributor, search for RB411 and you
should have plenty of options, best one probably close to you so you
 get
them quickly prices are roughly the same everywhere. Titan Wireless is
 an
excellent source of Mikrotik Product and they are good to work with.

the compex cards but well worth it.

Re: [WISPA] [Motorola II] Mesh Network

2009-06-19 Thread L. Aaron Kaplan

As far as I am informed, the Athens wireless folks use a custom built
OLSR package for Microtik.
I think I could put that onto the www.olsr.org page

FYI: OLSR.org is proven to scale to at least 1000 nodes. We currently
estimate a few thousand nodes is possible with linksys 200MHz devices.
Tests between Freifunk and Funkfeuer cross connection showed that 1000
nodes work.

best,
a.
