There's a difference between killing someone who shows you a weapon and

use lethal force to defend your life. That's a lot different from
hunting down and killing someone who steals or destroys your property
at a remote location and is not threatening your life.
Not planning on hunting them down... objective is to capture and hold.

And this statement...
 A
remote crime
against property should be handled by the local law enforcement
authorities.

...is a matter of political philosophy and personal opinion, not law.

I've been bugerlized.  The cops did nothing... I checked every pawn and
consignment shop in 50 miles... found my stuff...  got the perp's ID
and prints and gave them to the prosecuting attorney myself.

At any rate, discussions about killing are off-topic for this list. I'd
suggest that we all get back to work and stop bragging about killing
people.

What bragging?

I was in a hurry and used the term felony loosely.  Sorry about that.

I may defend my property against imminent destruction, i.e. someone
trying to burn it down, knock it down... ect.

If I shot a kid with a spray paint can, I'd have a problem in court.
But if I shot a guy using a bulldozer to try and knock my house down,
I'd be clear.

Re: [WISPA] GPS NTP Server?

2009-09-08 Thread Randy Cosby
We have one running on a FreeBSD server. I'll have to look at how Aaron
set it up, but I'm sure there are plenty of software packages out there
that can do this. http://time.qnan.org/ is a linux example.

Mikrotiks can also act as GPS NTP time servers using the optional NTP
server package.

GPS time
http://www.mikrotik.com/testdocs/ros/3.0/system/ntp.php - NTP server and

Oh yeah, that's right, the MT will do that.

Ok - any suggestions on an decent GPS receiver that is outdoor/weatherproof
and has a serial connection? I've found a bunch of USB, a couple that are

more that aren't weatherproof.

Re: [WISPA] GPS NTP Server?

2009-09-08 Thread Jayson Baker
I discovered that somewhere along the lines, MT added support for USB-based
GPS. So I bought a $15 outdoor USB GPS off eBay. We'll see next week if it
works. MT docs said as long as it supports NMEA output (which this one did)
it'd work.

We don't need accuracy down to the nanosecond, but within a second or two.
We provide services to the local E911 PSAP, and need to make certain our end
matches theirs for VoIP, log files, etc. For this app, we don't want to
rely on Internet-based NTP servers, as some of our application is not tied
to the public Internet.

Re: [WISPA] GPS NTP Server?

2009-09-08 Thread ralph
The last time I looked into this, the GPS had to be one that output a 1 pps
signal, and most didn't.
Of course times could have changed (pun intended) and this isn't a
requirement any longer.
The GPS-35 from Garmin may meet your specs, I think, if it's still made.

And BTW- if you happen to have a Canopy CMM in your network, it also has the
NTP server derived from GPS built in.

Oh yeah, that's right, the MT will do that.

Ok - any suggestions on an decent GPS receiver that is outdoor/weatherproof
and has a serial connection? I've found a bunch of USB, a couple that are
serial and meant to go in a car (cigarette lighter & mag mount), and even
more that aren't weatherproof.

[WISPA] AM radio tower

2009-09-08 Thread Michael Baird
*I've recently been approached about expanding our service to an AM
tower. We would be using 2.4 gear, what kind of problems would I need to
watch out for when deploying on an AM tower. They said it was
broadcasting at 1KW and the entire tower is hot. It is in a really good
area, is a nice tower and the price is minimal, but I want to avoid as
many service problems as possible by knowing what I'm getting into
beforehand.

Any problems I expect will be ethernet related. What frequency is the tower?

Re: [WISPA] AM radio tower

2009-09-08 Thread Israel Lopez-LISTS
Michael,

If you get any responses off-list, I would be happy to hear. I have a
similar situation, but down in Honduras. I posted nearly an exact
question to yours, and the consensus was.

1) Install Noise Suppression, and Shielded Twisted Pair
2) Install only when the Tower is unpowered

In my situation we want to use the 1KW AM Radio because of how tall the
tower is, our stuff is 2.4 as well but we plan on 5.8 soon.

Re: [WISPA] AM radio tower

2009-09-08 Thread Paul Rice
Tricky, but it's been done.

You'll have to insulate your installation of radios, cables and antennas.
and they will have to power down the tower while you install.
