Re: [WISPA] Customer Speed Tests

2010-05-13 Thread D. Ryan Spott
Take a look at

I modified mine to save speedtests that my clients run so I can review them
at a later date. This helps me spot trends. I let my customers see the last
5 or so speedtests.

Some advice:
1. Make sure you save ALL of the speedtests your clients run. Then you can
look at the history of speedtests when the customer emails you to whine
about "slow speeds" and sends you a screenshot of the speedtest... the
one they cherry picked to show slow speeds... This generally happens around
billing time.
2. Make sure that it is only available on your network. I had to put mine
behind a php ACL to prevent dialup users from telling me that my wireless
was no faster than their dialup according to my speedtest that they ran
from their dialup connection!! *head-desk*.
3. (this makes #2 even more important.. I cannot tell you how many customers
would call complaining about 'slow speeds'... and after investigating I
found they were using an AOL proxy or a proxy running some filtering
software... or performing the speedtest through their corp VPN connection!

I wonder if they are including WISPs in their rural carriers plan?
Nevertheless, I¹m sure if the price is right you too can operate on 4g!

I see what you mean, I've always used FF which works fine and shows the
graphics, but IE seems to only show text. Our customers have never
really said anything about that, but I guess they wouldn't know any
better if they are only using one type of browser. I know when I install
it I made some changes to take the less professional wording out about
SVN and such.

That would be your problem. I use Firefox 99% of the time, Chrome if
I want a different browser (Firefox forgets that cache is temporary).

I have the same problem with IE8. I don't think shamelessly is the

Re: [WISPA] Customer Speed Tests

2010-05-13 Thread Mike
But it appears to want Firefox or SVG? When I run it, this happens on this
netbook.

No SVG Capabilities detected! That sucks! This speed test is MUCH prettier
if you have a browser capable of SVG! You can remedy this in any one of
three ways:
1.Download the Adobe SVG plugin from here.
2.Download the latest version of Mozilla Firefox from here.
3.Download the latest version of Opera from Opera.
Starting Speed Test...
Request Latency: ~114.2 ms
Test Download Size: 1.2 MB
Test Upload Size: 126.0 KB
Upload Speed: 407.7 Kb/s
Download Speed: 7.4 Mb/s
Speed Test Finished.
Estimated Line Type: 10M Ethernet
( ~291.2 x faster than avg. modem speeds)
Time to load an average web page: ~0.1 s
Time to download 10MB file: ~9.5 s

Doesn't appear it's a demo. Is there any configuration to it? Look

Re: [WISPA] Customer Speed Tests

2010-05-13 Thread Bret Clark
Well there certainly is something odd with that demo. There are some
configurations to it that I seem to recall, it was pretty easy to set up.
Just google ajaxometer to find a bunch that do work. I tested a bunch of
these tools about a year ago and found this one to work best with our
high speed customer who had 10+ mbps links from us.

Yes, but you need to work on making that a symmetrical connection; your
upload stinks! :-) Now that is funny; better save that graphic.

It¹s not get around the 30 day limit. The mini is different than their
commercial product. It is not Java as well. Is is Flash.

If you read the web-site it states:

This application is offered "as is" free of charge without any support - use
it at your own risk. We will introduce new features to it every few months
in required updates. As such you will have to download it again
periodically.

Is this basically "let's get around the 30-day demo limit by reinstalling
every couple weeks"? That strikes me as (at best) horribly unethical. If you
use the software, pay for it; $400/year isn't all that expensive in the
grand scheme of things.

You're mixing up two products.

Speedtest Mini is free, however, the client updates every once in a
while. You'll see it pop up after a few weeks/months asking for you
to do exactly what those commands do.

The VisualWare has a shareware version.

cd /speedtest/website/folder/

rm -f mini.zip

you dont need to reboot and most folks have java already on systems.
it's a small java applet. server runs java and you can buy it for your

My customers have 2 and 4 meg down. Mini seems to show 99% of that if
the connection is good. Just now Mini shows 9651 kbps and 495 kbps
(limited by my queue trees in a RB).

http://speed.inxwireless.com/NEW/AJAXOmeter-1.0.1/ajaxometer.php

It told me I have 51 Mbps. Through a 2.4Ghz 10mhz link (MT and NS2).

I like mini because it just requires a browser with flash. Very
common between online poker players and farmers looking up weather.

We have been using:
http://www.speedtest.net/mini.php
for a couple of years. The only caveat is that you must "reinstall" it
every month as it expires otherwise. The good thing is that is a VERY
simple process. Seems to be the most accurate free test we could find.
I really like Visualware's products, but they seem too expensive.

Re: [WISPA] RUS Deadline Approaching

2010-05-13 Thread Rick Harnish
Peter's response:

Hi Rick,

Cameron asks a great question. The simple answer is: "Yes, WISPS should
register all of the requested service area demographic information requested
by RUS."

It gets more detailed than that, and Cameron is right that correctly filing
the full required / requested data goes beyond the capabilities of most
WISPs (or cablecos, or telephone coops). That is why we have assembled all
of the applicable data, and have it running on our severs.

I will answer Cameron directly, and CC you on the response. - Peter.

Re: [WISPA] RUS Deadline Approaching

2010-05-13 Thread ccrum
So, I've read through Alex's little article on disputing, but he seems to
leave out the part about "Existing Establishments Capable of Receiving
High Speed Access within the Proposed Funded Service Area". This is where
they want you to tell them the demographics of your service area. While I
have the tools to do this, it is not a trivial task if you do it
correctly, and I would doubt that most wisps on the list have the tools to
do it. Does anyone know if this is actually required? What happens if you
leave it at 0?

I dunno whether this was the telcos' doing, or not, but the power rules in
3.65 are silly and counter-intuitive.

Basically, your EIRP is limited to... the width of your channel. Need a
small, long-distance link? Too bad, a 5MHz channel limits you to 5 watts
EIRP (about 37dBm). Using better antennas doesn't help; there's no "tradeoff
power for antenna gain" rule like 2.4 PTP. A 20MHz-wide channel lets you go
up to 20 watts EIRP (43 dBm). The rules encourage using more spectrum than
you really need, and make it very difficult to set up longer-distance links
- even if you use all 25MHz available to you, there's a hard cap of 25 W
EIRP (or 44.something dBm).

Re: [WISPA] Licensed PMP Gear

2010-05-13 Thread Jeff Ehman
My comment below was assuming you want/need to go with PtMP because of tower
requirements ect... I agree with Gino though that licensed PtP links are
probably your best solution if you can justify it.

Airspan has a great solution. Their MicroMax or MacroMax base stations operate
in 2.5GHz and utilize 802.16e. You can do full mobility but as with any
802.16e solution you would need an ASN Gateway. For your application, I doubt
this would be useful though.

Your best bet would be a MicroMaxe base station with ProST2 CPE.

I'm looking to sub lease spectrum.

We have a 3.65 license, but After all the telcos got done changing the
FCC requirements, I don't see much advantage to that.

I would like to be able to push out 20-50 Meg symmetrical pipes to a
number of business customers.

Re: [WISPA] 6 mile 100MB link 5Ghz non-licensed

2010-05-13 Thread Marlon K. Schafer
OK, budget isn't an issue, how about tower space?

In my perfect world I'd rather run 2 or more slower radios and have a switch
or bridge of some kind aggregate the traffic across them all to get the
higher speeds. This way when a single device fails the link doesn't fail
with it.

laters,
marlon
