[WISPA] Its official Demarcs going out

2010-05-24 Thread Tony Morella
As some of you may have heard Demarc Technology Group, Inc, after 10 years of
serving the WISP community, has decided to closes its offices. While Demarc is
going out of the hardware business, I have some pretty cool projects in the
works and will report back when we are ready :) In the mean time give me a hand
so I can clean out the warehouse! :)

We have a good amount of stock and selling it at or below cost, all of which
can be found on our web store:
https://www.demarctech.com/store/catalog/default.php

If you want to buy bulk send me an email at t...@demarctech.com and make me an
offer we will look at any reasonable ones that come our way.

Yes/no. My solution is a Mikrotik Script that requires a MT router to
be put in place. It will work on a bridged MT, so we can certainly make
this work. I will contact you offlist to get your phone number and I
can explain further there.

It's not out right now.

The description I get is that it is meant to be an indoor soho router
(something like an rb750w) which is great...but in this application maybe
not a fit.

A good point. The QOS template I sell is EASILY modified by the end
user. The "default" configuration is good for MOST users, however.

The "requirement" as stated is one that behaves in a fashion similar to
NetEq and/or PacketShaper. This behavior model is exactly how I
designed mine.

Anyone can build this to your needs as well. We don't sell a "canned"
solution. I am sure Butches solution works great though. WE build one
to your QoS to your needs and requirements. ;) It can take less than
1/2 hour, or several hours depending on how involved you need it.

Mikrotik and Butch's QOS template is better but the same out of the box
solution for less.

You can do your own QOS configuration with Mikrotik, too. The template
is
only $175 so it depends on how much your time is worth.

Re: [WISPA] Good reliable b/g/n inside AP

2010-05-24 Thread Jeff Ehman
I would not compare Ruckus to Ubiquiti and Engenius. That is like comparing a
Bobcat to a full blown Cat bulldozer. Sure they are considered mobile
construction equipment to move large piles of heavy scraps but they serve
completely different applications.

It is better to compare Ruckus to Cisco, Meru, Aruba ect... When looking at
the commercial grade products, Ruckus blows the competition out of the water.
You can put together a low cost solution together with Engenius and Ubiquiti
but support can be a nightmare and you will need to install, maintain and
configure FAR more access points per square foot.

Ruckus is a commercial grade product for commercial applications. When you
look at that price point, Ruckus uses less APs and comes in much lower than the
others.

What do you mean by a Ruckus box? Their APs go from a couple hundred up to
nearly 1k depending on the model. The controller starts just over 1k and goes
up to over 20k.

They have a wide portfolio.

National Broadband Plan – Spectrum

influence the “broadband ecosystem” in four ways, one of which is to “Ensure
efficient allocation and management of assets government controls or
influences, such as spectrum, poles and rights of way, to encourage network
upgrades and competitive entry.” FCC National Broadband Plan Executive
Summary p. XI.
* FCC Proposes in NBP to:

* Make 500 MHz of spectrum newly available for Broadband within 10
years, of which 300 MHz should be made available for mobile use within 5
years.
* Enable incentives and mechanisms to “repurpose” spectrum to more
flexible uses including incentive auctions.
* Ensure greater transparency of spectrum allocation, assignment and
use through an FCC created spectrum “dashboard” to foster an efficient
secondary market.
* Expand opportunities for innovative spectrum access models by
creating new avenues fir opportunistic and unlicensed use of spectrum and
increasing research into new spectrum technologies.

* The contribution of wireless services to overall gross domestic
product grew over 16% annually from 1992-2007 compared with less than 3%
annual growth for the remainder of the economy. Some analysts predict that
within five years more users will connect to the Internet via mobile devices
than desktop personal computers (PCs).
* NBP recognizes need for reallocation of spectrum to accommodate
tremendous growth in mobile Broadband.
* Wireless Broadband is poised to become a key platform for innovation
in the United States over the next decade. As a result, U.S. spectrum
policy requires reform to accommodate the new ways that industry is
delivering wireless services. These reforms include making more spectrum
available on a flexible basis, including for unlicensed and opportunistic
uses. Given the length of the spectrum reallocation process, these reforms
should reflect expectations of how the wireless world will look 10 years
from now. These reforms should ensure that there is sufficient, flexible
spectrum that accommodates growing demand and evolving technologies. FCC
NBP p. 75
* “Disruptive” technologies/internet computing and mobile
communications

* Convergence of Internet computing and mobile communications leading
to exponential growth in mobile broadband
* As evidenced by billions of dollars invested by both wireless
carriers and device manufacturers
* Even without NBP, wireless carriers may effectively “relicense”
spectrum to leverage Broadband service

* WSJ reported recently that Verizon Wireless is in talks with rural
telcos to license wireless spectrum.
* Will cover more of the country with VZs 4G Network
* VZ announced that it is not slowing its investment in its 4G Network
(which runs on “Long-term Evolution”) in light of FCC’s NBP

* FCC Spectrum policy of NBP premised on the Commission’s assessment
that “the growth of wireless Broadband will be constrained if government
does not make spectrum available to enable network expansion and technology
upgrades.” FCC NBP p. 77
* FCC characterizes spectrum as “The Great Enabler” and cites the fact
that spectrum was originally allocated to television channels 70-83 and in
1983, this band was reallocated which effectively gave birth to the mobile
industry.
* FCC maintains that the current spectrum policy framework impedes the
free flow of spectrum to its most highly valued uses and greater
flexibility, both for service rules and license transfers, is necessary.
*   Spectrum Transparency:

* FCC maintains that “spectrum policy starts with the
transparency-disclosure obout spectrum allocations, licensing and
utilization.” FCC NBP p. 79
* Plan states that FCC and the NTIA should create a system for greater
transparency on spectrum allocation and utilization.
* FCC has launched a beta release of a spectrum “dashboard” which is
Internet based software that enables user friendly access to information
regarding spectrum bands and licenses, including those that may be suitable
for wireless broadband deployment. Spectrum dashboard will also allow users
to browse spectrum bands more easily, search for spectrum license, produce
maps and download raw data for future analysis.

* FCC (via one of its many recommendations on spectrum) asks Congress
to expand the Commission’s authority to conduct “incentive” auctions

* Incentive auctions are designed to encourage incumbent licensees to
relinquish rights in spectrum assignments to other parties or to the FCC.
* In an incentive auction, an incumbent licensee would receive a
port

Ruckus Wireless. Hands down. Their smart antenna array, price point and
simple configuration/maintenance are unmatched. Plus, this pertains to larger
projects but if their controller goes down all the APs still broadcast! The
only functionality that goes away is support/maintenance but at least everyone
can still get on the internet.

So many different things out on the market right now. What would you guys
recommend for a reliable AP for use inside a conference room for a business
requiring rock solid access? B/G would be OK, but would prefer to go ahead
and have N as well.

Thanks!
