I believe he has exclusive use of a 300 foot tower and all grain legs he's
the only one on. Shouldn't be any additional expense for him other than
equipment.

LOL.

The question I have is

Was OLD BOY on a per antenna or per grain leg contract?

Meaning, to accommodate OLD HAM's Request, did Old boy get consessions of
getting free colo for the added sector antennas? Or did Old boy have to pay
more rent for more antennas?

Update on the competitor situation.

Today was the big meeting between old boy, new boy and the owners of the
grain legs that new boy is on.

Again, old boy is related in a roundabout way to the grain legs owners but
they decided not to have him do this project for them.

Everyone showed up for the meeting but tower owner boys had a surprise
visitor with them. They brought in OLD HAM RADIO GUY!

Old Ham Radio Guy, or just Ham was there to be the knowledgeable neutral
party.

Ham looked over the equipment and the network structure, the RF being used
and the interference that old boy was claiming. In the end, Old Ham was
impressed with New Boys knowledge, professionalism and quality of equipment.
Old boy... He wasn't impressed with his setup of much else and pointed out
immediately the inherent weakness in his Omni antennas. However, Ham wrote
up a plan for old boy and new boy to follow and the only real requirement is
that old boy replace those Omnis with sectors and to agree on trying to
separate their coverage area as best they can. Word is Old Boy has already
obtained a few sectors so we shall see.

Thanks for ideas on both sides of this. I just have to laugh at Old Ham
Dude coming in as the wild card. You can't argue with an old ham no matter
how much you try.

He.net routinely has peering issues and other problems. They are the
bargain basement for a reason. You can get Inet for $1-2 a meg pretty
easily. I hesitate to compare them to Cogent. Cogent sells dirt cheap
bandwidth, but they have the benefit of being a public company.

Re: [WISPA] he.net

2011-01-03 Thread Glenn Kelley
I have found HE.net to be one of the better organizations out there.
Take a peek @ their peering map - they also run one of the better IPv6
tunnels out there.

Why do you say they have peering issues?

One of the reasons I like them is because they have an open peering policy:
http://he.net/peering.html

to see their network from a slightly different view lets peek here:
http://www.peeringdb.com/view.php?asn=6939peerParticipantsPublics_mOrder=Sorter_local_asnpeerParticipantsPublics_mDir=ASC

According to www.isitup.org - they are online :-)

They have one of the better looking glasses on the web - so lets use that real
quick:

Peering View for HE.net http://bgp.he.net/AS6939

Peering View for Cogent http://bgp.he.net/AS174

Peering view for ATT http://bgp.he.net/AS7018

There are a number of folks who, at the end of the year, are dropping peering
relationships that have expired - so it could be simply that your providers'
providers provider may have had their peering change.
Not that uncommon.

You will see a drop on all of them - and then they will build back up.

A great website however to see what is happening is www.TRACEROUTE.org - from
here you can use looking glasses and routers world wide to check the status of
your network, bgp paths etc...

Hoping everyone has a great year:

[WISPA] FCC Commish: No need for net neutrality; we have white spaces!

2011-01-03 Thread Jack Unger
Speechless, I am...

Critics of US broadband want one of two things: open access rules that would
create greater ISP competition of the kind that actually existed in the early
2000s or, barring that, net neutrality rules to keep ISPs from abusing their
market power. But according to FCC Commissioner Robert McDowell, we don't need
either policy—white space devices make both approaches unnecessary...

Re: [WISPA] FCC Commish: No need for net neutrality; we have white spaces!

2011-01-03 Thread David Hulsebus
I like the last sentence better.

White space devices will provide a competitive alternative to existing
broadband providers, he argued, and noted that the unlicensed nature of
the newly free spectrum should lead to faster real-world deployments
than a spectrum auction.

I'm looking to pickup a gig IP pipe from them this summer. My research

It appears to be only a temporary DNS issue. http://dns.he.net/

Routing is fine. We have a server on he.net bandwidth for 6 months
and they have always worked great.

And HE's entire network supports IPv6. Make sure your connection is
setup for it.

Re: [WISPA] FCC Commish: No need for net neutrality; we have white spaces!

2011-01-03 Thread MDK
To heck with the critics!

What do they know? Did anyone ask the people who know something, rather
than just the pointy-headed academics?

NN rules are a disaster waiting to happen, and open access is an
unsustainable model based on a pretend market.

He is absolutely right, however, competition and the ability become
competition simply removes the need for ANY meddling.

Re: [WISPA] Layer 3 routing

2011-01-03 Thread Glenn Kelley
Netgear's layer3 is good but not that good.
Are you able to throw a router in the mix for them ?
might actually make things easier -

check out pfsense on an alix board - cost will be under $300 for a simple
system that you can brand w/ your own logo.
There is also microtik as well

Personally I have found the layer3 w/ netgear to be okay - but it is not Top
notch - and to get their help heck it will cost you more than another solution
for the phone call.
I can take a peek however if you hit me off list

I have setup a wireless network and setup up on a separate subnet per

one application they use uses Multicasting. The multicast packets are not
passing across the Layer 3 switch. Best I can tell I have multicasting setup
on the switch but documentation is scarce. Anyone try this before? Good or
 Bad?
