I use two pieces of gear Motorola and D/W.  I find D/W support to be very good,
they always get back to you in a timely manner

Just curious what everyone's experience with Dragonwave support has been.
Do they answer e-mail/phone calls promptly?  Is their support 24/7?  Is
the product so good you just don't know because you've never contacted them?

RE: [WISPA] Mikrotik - Longest 2.4ghz Shot

2006-02-16 Thread robert maier
Just a little info it all started for the the government going from building to building, this was their primary link, they were not using it for redundancy. After a trial period, they decided they wanted to go to the V.I and so to the top of the mountain we went El junke and to the top of recovery hill in the VI We had great connectivity for their internet and such but 11mbs did not quite have the bandwidth they needed for video. The 11mbs was left in place and Proxim was used as a primary for higher band width and I believe we hired a local down in Puerto Rico to later provide a DS3 pipe which was later also sent on to not only St. Croix but to St thomas. Have installed Aeronet many many times in ptp situations and I have to tell you I like the product, I believe I have a 15 mile aeronet link in the resume. It all comes down to proper antenna ,cable and a good clean path and in P.R. you bet
 ter have
some good weather proofing. If I didn't believe in the stuff wireless ISP's do or best yet try. I'd be in the cable business and so far I've been around over ten years and still find myself around radiosand always have had a job."G.Villarini" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:Robert, care to share about this link in PR, we are a local wisp and we havnt heard of it…. Re: [WISPA] Flawed Spectrum Analysis (I think!)

2006-02-10 Thread robert maier
I think you hit the nail on the headBob Moldashel [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: AUGH!This whole thread..Some have touched on pieces of it but how about this summary..The Redline is a two piece radio. It does not send 5 Ghz up the cable. It sends an IF frequency which is lower and more forgiving as well as power to operate the outdoor unit. The Redline as pointed out does not have a spectrum analyzer (in the versions I have worked with). As such they probably just checked for RSL on any or all channels. This is not a spectrum analysis by any means. The Redline equipment is great equipment but it is not a spectrum analyzer.A spectrum analysis is flawed in almost any case really because it is only good at the time of the testing and along the path of the test. You rea
 lly will
only see stronger signals with an omni. But you can still have your signal killed if someone is using directional antennas and looking down your path. There is a big difference from 8 dB to 29 dB.The other case is a 5 Ghz. system in place that only is used at the end of the day or does "dumps' at certain times. Unlike a full duplex radio like a Proxim Tsunami that is talking all the time regardless of the received signal, you may only see a signal when the associated equipment is passing data. In my book you can't do "reliable spectrum analysis" with any radio or assocaited radio card. Yes, there are systems out there that work really well but I would not be willing to bet my reputation on most. Will they get you by in most cases??? Sure. But...To answer your question..Yes, the spectrum analysis was flawed.Personally...we never do spectrum analysis.
  It
causes more headaches than what it is worth IMHO. Is it great for finding interference?? Sure.I have installed links in lower Manhattan (nearly 70 to date on unlicensed 5 Ghz), Washington DC and Boston without ever needing a spectrum analysis. All these locations are RF hotbeds.A few things to consider. Use a radio with a very good C/I value. Use 2' or larger antennas to keep the beamwidth tight. Use radios that are capable of 5 or 10 Mhz. channels. Use radios with high RF power output. If you need to run transmission line to the radio, use the right stuff for the job. LMR400 and 5 Ghz. are not my considered options unless the cable length is less than 24". We use LMR600 up to 100' and 5/8" heliax after that. make sure the radio has a good receiver threshold. Wherever possible we use 5.3 Ghz.Last and not least consider your neighbors. If there is only one tall building in town and everyone is on it use 5 Ghz
 . you
are probably in for some challenges. But if you do a spectrum analysis, find a clear channel, build on it and then smile and walk away only to have one of the existing operators change channels and rain on your parade. Its a game of chance but with the proper engineering you can move the odds more in your favor.Good Luck!-B--- Bob MoldashelLakeland Communications, Inc.Broadband Deployment Group1350 Lincoln AvenueHolbrook, New York 11741 USA800-479-9195 Toll Free US Canada631-585-5558 Fax516-551-1131 Cell-- WISPA Wireless List: wireless@wispa.orgSubscribe/Unsubscribe:http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wirelessArchives: http://lists.wispa.org/pipermail/wireless/

Mark look no further then www.globalwireless-inc.com they sevice all of these radios and continue to make radios to this day with Karlnet/Turbocell software on them. Base, satelite, ptp or multipoint or dual radios, they even repair old Wave Wireless radios. Ydi, karlnet, Terrabeam, Proxim who bought who I don't even know anymore hard to keep up with. Been waiting along time for someone on the list to ask about Karlnet Equipment/ Software. Then the YDI/Terabeam/Proxim series of mergers acquisitions happened and I've got products from all companies but they are all Turbocell CPE.We have 6 WiPops surrounding our customer base (rural southern Willamette Valley). We're using Trango backhauls...I started out using them simply because of their low cost and advertised bandwidth. I still have two in use from when the company was called Sunstream (I think it was 2002). I remain happy about that decision. We started out with a bridged network then ARP changed my tune and we went to a routed design.OK, so...there it is. For those of you who know what's going on with Turbocell from the new Proxim, you probably know that I'm not happy as they have set out to discontinue the Turbocell client software. So I will soon have to purchase new AP's and shift some customers around because I won't be able to purchase Turbocell-based devices. That's the word fro

Proxim. So...anyone heard any differently? I've also asked Proxim if we can 'downgrade' our Turbocell products to 802.11b and they are saying 'no'.It's a you-know-what sandwich from which I'd rather not take a bite.Does anyone feel my pain? Any way around these issues aside from replacing CPE?Regards,Mark NashNetwork EngineerUnwiredOnline.Net325 Holly StreetJunction City, OR 97448http://www.uwol.net541-998-541-998-5599 fax -- WISPA Wireless List: wireless@wispa.orgSubscribe/Unsubscribe:http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wirelessArchives: http://lists.wispa.org/pipermail/wireless/

I'am a radio manufacturer out of Bradenton Florida, We make 2.4 and 5.8 ghz 11 meg spread spectrum radios, plus we have a new generation radio coming out soon that will go up to 54 meg. These radios can either be outdoor mount or indoor mount. The out door are power over ethernet.Point to point, Point to multipoint, DHCP,NAT,Routing, these radios do it all and they are very reliable. Have many links out ther for over 8 years with no problems.
