Re: [WISPA] Accounting Software to Replace PC Based Quickbooks

2017-09-26 Thread troy
We use QB desktop 2016 version for everything except processing credit
cards. Learned quick I did not want Intuit to control my credit card
deposits. We work with an online bank, Propay.com for our credit card
needs. They note they work with internet providers and have been very
good.

https://www.propay.com/en-US/Industry-Solutions/Internet-Service-Providers

We use QB for monthly invoicing and work with local accountant to manage
reconciliations of expenses and payroll to be sure all is correctly
entered. I have heard Freshbooks is good, but the pain to change is more
than I want to mess with and QB desktop is paid for and does not add a
monthly expense I have to carry with the online version.

[WISPA] Licensed vs Unlicensed / Carrier-class vs not

Other than making some guy in a suit feel good and being safer from
interference, what advantages are there to running a so-called carrier class
system using a licensed frequency?

[WISPA] Remote generator monitoring?

2011-06-24 Thread Troy Settle
How does one typically monitor remote locations to know when/if they're
running on generator? I'd like to know when a generator exorcises and when
it's running due to a power outage.

The easiest solution I can think of, is to stick an old routerboard at the
site to run from the generator only, then monitor it to know when we're on
genny power. This seems a little klunky though.

Thanks,

Re: [WISPA] Remote generator monitoring?

2011-06-24 Thread Troy Settle
I was wondering about that. no experience though. What hardware/software do
you use at the site to facilitate the monitoring?

It was suggested in a private reply to monitor the UPS. but that doesn't
quite work, as the UPS will likely not know the difference between grid and
genny power.

Most of the Generac or commercial gensets have relays in the control panel
that let you know what is going on. We tie into them and just use a contact
closure monitor.

Any frequency really, I'm just curious as to what's available and how much
it costs (licensing and equipment). From what I've read, FCC auctions go
for millions per license. way out of reach for us.

I understand that there are some shared frequencies that are available for
PTP links (6,11,18,22,whatever), but are these any good for PTMP?

Yes; PTMP frequencies can be expensive at auction. A lot depends on the
geographic area where you want to deploy. Sometimes you can lease
frequencies. Others on this list can give you more specific information.

[WISPA] WDS compatibility between UBNT AP and MT CPE

2011-09-28 Thread Troy Settle
I have 0 experience with UBNT gear (other than their wireless cards), so I'm
hoping someone here can provide some basic guidance.

I'm looking at replacing MT access points (straight 802.11 w/WDS) to UBNT.
Are there any WDS compatibility issues between MT clients and UBNT access
points?

Ultimately, we can do without WDS, but only if there's a suitable
alternative for transparent bridging (I'm pretty sure MT's station-bridge
mode does NOT work with non-MT access points).

Thanks,

Curious... we build wireless because we can't get fiber 'out there.' In
fact, we're using wireless backhaul to feed FTTH.

If you're needing wireless for last-mile, how are you getting fiber to the

[WISPA] Preventing stupid outages

Ok, so to keep to code, we have a GFCI outlet for most of our towers. One

Is there anything to prevent stupid outages like this from happening without

Thanks Matt!

Yeah, the outlet itself is on a post next to the tower foundation and a
dropcord feeds into a NEMA box mounted on the tower (no shack). We have a
few sites set up like this, and I think I'm going to hardwire everything
before we get much further into lightning season.

Since posting, I spoke with an electrician who has done some other work for
us, and he also suggested yanking the GFCI.

I don't know why this was installed this way. I'm thinking that the
electrician who did the original work was thinking more residential than
industrial. I'll leave the GFCI outlet in place as a convenience outlet to
provide the extra protection when we're out there working.

Re: [WISPA] Preventing stupid outages

2012-03-16 Thread Troy Settle
Next stupid outage at a different site.

Specs:

Generac 8KW generator

Automatic Transfer Switch

APC 450 rack mount UPS

Mikrotik RB1200

Mikrotik RB435 (3x 802.11n sectors)

Dragonwave Compact Horizon #1

Dragonwave Compact Horizon #2

(I don't know how many horses, chickens, goats, pigs, and other critters are
onsite, but I don't think they're an issue).

Total load on the UPS is at 44%, estimated run is 25 minutes (long enough
for the generator and switch to do their thing).

Radios grounded to the tower, tower grounded and bonded to the shack. Shack
has two rods (panel -> Rod -> Rod -> Generator).

Everything inside is bonded as well, including the drain wires on all the
Cat-5.

Yesterday, the Dragonwaves rebooted several times during the storm, but
neither RB lost power even once.

Any guesses? I'm sleeping on it over the weekend, but probably need to get
it figured out before too many more storms come over the mountains.

Thanks,

[WISPA] Dragonwave Horizon Compact - one way traffic only?

2012-07-31 Thread Troy Settle
I have a backbone with 5 licensed links. Each link is switched to the next,
forming a continuous L2 network.

Yesterday evening, we had a partial breakdown on the very last link. I
could see traffic /from/ the far end, but the far end was unable to see
traffic from this side. I could see discovery packets, I could see OSPF
multicast traffic. I could even see some stuff from a few devices that are
bridged or switched in on the other side of the link.

The last device that was responsive to me, was the Horizon Compact on the
near side of that last link. Nothing notable in the logs, so I reboot and a
few minutes later, everything is back to normal.

I can't find much of anything in terms of peer-to-peer support for
Dragonwave equipment, so I figured I'd ask here. does anyone have any
experience they wouldn't mind sharing about Dragonwaves?

Just speed limiting, not concerned about data capping. We have some older

For speed we use built-in UBNT CPE limiting with MT backup limiting.

Re: [WISPA] Email Providers?

2018-08-08 Thread Troy Slagle
We use NeoNova when we went away from our own email servers. They were
fantastic to work with and the transition was relatively painless. There is
always a lot of work in the transition but they work with you every step of
the way. You can hit me up off list and I can get you some contact info if
you are interested in getting a quote.

Subject: [WISPA] Email Providers?

Hi Folks,

We're looking at possibly migrating our customer mail from local servers to
a cloud provider (full service, not a build-our-own at AWS/google/azure/etc
hopefully), though the discussion is still very much at the "talking about
it" stage.  Assuming that anyone here uses a cloud provider for email, does
anyone on the list want to share who they are using and what their migration
experience was like?  Pricing would also be great, assuming no NDA.

Thanks!
Tim Densmore

Typical cost is around $1-2/IP/Month with various fiber providers.

I've been planning to charge something like $10-20/IP/Mo for commercial in
order to only sell to people who really need it.

Comcast Business class cable internet charges 1 - $14.95/mo. 5 - $19.95/mo 13 -
$34.95/mo.
What do fiber providers charge?
I have a potential client that currently has a /27 with his current provider,
and would like at least a /27 or preferably a /26 from us.
We only have a /21 worth of space from ARIN.

Re: [WISPA] Static IP Pricing

2017-02-02 Thread Troy Gibson, Byhalia.net
For me it is cost I pay per IP block. I have a small block so price is higher.
One supplier I checked was $70/month for 5 public IPs, so $14/month/IP.  The
bigger the block I got the better the pricing.
Majority is private and very small amount is public IPs for me.

Agreed, but I need to be able to justify this pricing somehow. What does AT&T
charge if you get their Fiber MIS product? Is it unlimited with justification
or what? What are most fiber providers doing even the ones that have extremely
large blocks?

So a /26 has 64 total IPs, but only 62 are useable. So you are saying you would
charge $5 - $10 per IP times 62 IPs? The cost of their statics would then cost
more than the actual service?
