Re: [WISPA] Anyone doing remote backup for customers?
HBU uses Blowfish, Cobian 8 has RSA-Rijndael or Blowfish or even WinZIP AES to encrypt on their side and keep it stored encrypted on our remote server. If it's stored unencrypted on our server, that's their problem since all we are doing is holding it for them. If they want a redundant copy of their data stored, we can do that too. Exactly...we're setting up a 1.25Gbps link for a client with line speed AES256 encryption. I believe the link meets and will be FIPS 140-2 compliant as well. However, even with this level of security on the link hardware it is always best to encrypt BEFORE the data leaves your network. Re: [WISPA] Anyone doing remote backup for customers?
I think Mac means more on the storage side. RBS sends encrypted files to the remote server. the type where if the key is lost, so are your files. And the files are worthless without the key. It is fine and dandy to have an encrypted network, but if the remote backup server has unencrypted files you are in trouble (If I wanted to steal data I would go for the central server rather than the single connection, bigger payday). Depending on something like simple zip file passwords is laughable at best; maybe it has better encryption than that, I don't know. That being said, except for our issues with scheduling in RBS, it has been very good. RE: [WISPA] Anyone doing remote backup for customers?
I have only used the native scheduler that comes with the software. The scheduler could be improved - - like having a password on it to prevent changes without authorization. That is the only time we have had any sort of problem - -was when someone (no one ever knows who) changes the files that we had backing up. I consider that OE (operator error) problems because we can point to the right files, hit "run now" and it goes back to doing what it was supposed to do. I also warn the agencies to periodically check to make sure that it is backing uop the correct files. I always name the profile "choose this one" :-) with their only other choice as "default." Mac: I wonder what we are doing wrong then, we have been using RBS for 3 years, and it has been a pita. The scheduling problems have been the major problem (its scheduler is crap for us). Are you using the RBS native task scheduler, or running via Windows's task scheduler? That is the major gripe about it though, other than that it has been good. Not Open-source, but we are currently using Nova-Web (www.novastor.com). I'ts not cheap, but it does provide everything you could want including open file and MSSQL backup without having to shut down your databases.
