[WISPA] NetFlix via Tivo announced today
NetFlix made their Tivo announcement early this morning: LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! MOVIES AND TV EPISODES FROM NETFLIX DIRECTLY TO THE TV THROUGH TIVO DVRs AVAILABLE TODAY Just in Time for the Holidays, Offering Brings Budget Conscious Entertainment to Consumers ALVISO, Calif. - December 8, 2008 - After announcing a groundbreaking partnership in October with Netflix Inc., TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ: TIVO), the creator of and a leader in television services for digital video recorders (DVRs), today announced that subscribers to both Netflix and TiVo® Series3, TiVo HD, or TiVo HD XL can now access thousands of movies and TV episodes instantly streamed from Netflix directly to their TVs. The service is being offered at no additional charge to customers who subscribe to both services. This morning subscribers can browse through an expanding library of more than 12,000 movies and TV episodes at www.netflix.com, add them to their Netflix instant Queue, and then watch them on TV with just a click of the TiVo remote. The library includes titles from every genre, with a modest selection of HD content available as well. Both standard and HD titles are expected to grow in the weeks and months ahead. With so much talk focusing on the economy these days, this partnership makes more sense than ever because it brings people more movies at home, offering substantially more entertainment options than cable or satellite, said Tara Maitra, GM and Vice President of Content Services at TiVo Inc. TiVo offers consumers everything they need from just one box. Not only great content from Netflix, but also movies from The Walt Disney Studios and Amazon, music from Rhapsody, videos from YouTube and even pictures from Picasa Web Albums and Photobucket. And that's all in addition to TiVo's core functionality that made us a favorite in the first place. It adds up to a one-of-a-kind value. Netflix offers an unbeatable combination of convenience, selection, and value, which now extends to TiVo customers, said Netflix Chief Marketing Officer Leslie Kilgore. This partnership is a win-win-win for Netflix, TiVo, and consumers alike. Movies are streamed from Netflix through TiVo DVRs via wired or wireless broadband connection and a Netflix Queue-based user interface. Members visit the Netflix Web site to add movies and TV episodes to their individual instant Queues. Those choices will automatically be displayed on subscribers' TVs and are available to watch instantly through the TiVo service. With the TiVo remote control users can browse their instant Queue, make selections right on the TV screen, as well as read synopses and rate movies. In addition, they have the option of pausing, fast-forwarding, rewinding and re-starting whenever they wish. For more information on how to have movies instantly streamed from Netflix via your TiVo DVR visit www.tivo.com/netflix. WISPA Wants You! Re: [WISPA] NetFlix via Tivo announced today
The big problem here is not the streaming. Its the offering of HD movies for streaming. There are going to be a lot of disapointed people when they learn there crhitmas gift can deliver them the same quality HD that they are used to, because oversubscription rates on their Broadband connections. I would argue that those that do not address Movie streaming and HD on their Acceptable Use Policy, probably aught to do it soon. Or atleast post an official comment to subscribers. Depending on vendor, 2xT1 here is around that price and I'm only an hour drive to downtown Chicago. -- Mike Hammett Intelligent Computing Solutions http://www.ics-il.com -- From: Scottie Arnett [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, October 30, 2008 8:37 PM To: WISPA General List wireless@wispa.org Subject: Re: [WISPA] Netflix and TiVo Who is to blame for this all you can eat fiasco? My guess would be AOL back in the dialup days. I just can't seem to believe that the telco's followed suit, of course back then, the FCC rules were a little different. I guess the buffet has spread over to the broadband times. Not much you could do on dial-up at buffet level..when all speeds were basically the same and you could guess at bandwidth based on the amount of backbone bandwidth you had available compared to ports, but now it makes it hard to predict usage levels if you have various bandwidth plans. I think some applications have bypassed the amount of bandwidth we have available to us to stay in business. Of course, I operate in BFE where a 2XT1 cost over $1300/mth. The FCC thinks these new apps foster innovation...but it just spreads the digital divide even further IMHO. For those imposing bit caps where is the bit cap at? Here comcast is doing a 250GB bit cap then you here some of there customers whining how thats not fair. Re: [WISPA] Netflix and TiVo
That's how everything is going these days. That's why I've been badgering people to badger their vendors for gear with higher capacities and not the crap they have been shoveling (WiMAX). Keep going with the status quo and the Internet will pass you by. For some, it already has. -- Mike Hammett Intelligent Computing Solutions http://www.ics-il.com -- From: CHUCK PROFITO [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, October 30, 2008 12:19 AM To: 'WISPA General List' wireless@wispa.org Subject: [WISPA] Netflix and TiVo Netflix and TiVo are getting together.. more bandwidth anybody? Re: [WISPA] Netflix and TiVo
If I'm a water company the more water I sell the better. If I'm an electric company the more electricity I sell the better. So, how is this Netflix/Tivo deal a bad thing for an ISP? I see this as simply more pressure on the ISP industry as a whole to increase prices and/or move to a consumption model no different than the aforementioned. postage gone, and we deliver it (nearly free) at the customer expense ! ... make that at our expense. Usage based billing keeps looking better and better to me. Frontier, Comcast, and Time Warner are already on the bandwagon. I hear ATT is experimenting with it too.
