 Shireen cable

I admit the Shireen boxes and spools are not as durable as some other more
expensive brands, and as a result we have to be more careful with them.
 But
I really don't understand what all the fuss is about. Its not that big a
problem. The cable works great for us, its almost all we use now. Not to
mention, Shireen's support is awesome, and generally he stands behind his
 stuff 100%.
The cable itself is easy to work with, durable, inexpensive, the right
 size,
and readilly available, designed specifically for the need of a WISP.
 Also
remember this is also probably the least expensive product on the market,
its understandable to save on areas that don't sacrifice the cable quality
itself. All I can say about his cable is value, I'd recommend it to
 anyone.

Hints: Dont drop it off the side of the roof, Dont store it under your
ladders and Toolboxes in the VAN, Dont tug on it viciously, Don't drag it
across rocky roofs, Don't use them as a chair while getting drunk after a
hard days work, they won't hold up. But normal wear and tear, they are
 fine.

If we need something that will get barried by stone and trampled on, we'll
often use Superior Essex, which is much thicker for the more demanding
application, But the Superioer Essex is MUCH harder to work with, and 2-3
times the price, so we prefer Shireen's for most applications.

 Poor quality seems to plague

I fully disagree. His QC and standard for quality is the best in the
 industry.
His Pigtails are also expecially high quality, and I'm pretty sure
 everyone
gets tested. He pretty much only uses the real high quality thicker type
 cable.
And his price is great considering you are getting the super high quality
 stuff.

One time when we went by his warehouse, to buy and pickup some of the good
pigtail cables. On the way out, he also hands us a large bag of misc
pigtails, and says here have em. I say what for? He says, These are
useable, but I won't sell these. These don't meet our Quality standard, I
won't put my name on them. (Some were those very thin black and grey
 ones).
My point is, he'd rather throw them away and loose money, than sell junk.
There aren't many distributors that have that same standard.

(Funny thing... half of the junk ones worked well enough, when we were in
 short supply :-).

 that cable company.

Actually, they aren't just a cable compay. Allthough they also make and
 sell quality cable.
 He's also not just a Distributor/reseller/box mover.
Shireen is a brilliant Electrical engineer/designer well versed in the art
of manufacturing. Most of their Amps and Filters and stuff are designed
 and
made by him and/or staff. I've also had the luxury of meeting some of his
onsite staff. I've always found them to be very knowledgeable and
 helpful.
It becomes clear that the Quality doesn't stop at the CEO, but funnels
 down.

He's got these awesome, super small footprint amplifiers. He's definately
got it down to a science of how to make it small and compact.

He's also got a new line of Radio/CPE systems, conforming to basic Wifi
standards. If I remember correctly, its using High grade MTI type
 antennas,
 but at better pricing.
We don't use it that much, becauses we are a Trango house, but again its
good value for people using wifi.

I hope I'm not laying it on to thick, but this guy is definately not a guy
that deserves to get a bum rap.
He's helped us out of binds, more times than I can count, and not once has
he ever asked what he'd get in return.
Many companies offer price, and many offer support, but getting support
 and
 price is a tough find.

A lot of it may depend on your area, and what is and isn't standard stock
locally.
Its special order for me to get Superior Essex or Belden, and costs me more
because of it.
I also recognize Shireen needs to ship stuff in, just Like I need to ship
stuff in, so its fair to figured that into the cost.
But even without that, for me its less expensive. Exactly how much less for
you, well that depends on your situation.

box come apart on us before we get 200' of cable pulled off the reel.
The wire is too loosely wrapped which causes the wire to sink down
into the lower wraps. It's just been a mess. We pay $175.00 for the
Shireen cable and up until lately we had been pleased with it, but now
the boxes are so poorly designed we just spend way to much time in the
  field fighting with it.

For those not using Shireen, where do you get a shielded outdoor
cable? We haven't had very good success using a non-shielded cable
due to all the lightning (inductance) surges. So, we have to use
shielded, but not much luck finding a Vendor other than Shireen that
carries it for a fair price.

Belden makes good cable too. About $225 for 1000 feet.

Yes the Shireen spool boxes are horrible! We are not going to order
anymore until they fix this.

I'll check into Belden, thanks. Yeah, I think I'm done with Shireen
until they figure out a better design. I'd rather have a simple spool
than fight with that crap for one more minute.

I get a lot of my cable from Platt Electric Supply. They are in Idaho too
http://www.platt.com/Branches/state.aspx?state=ID

The issue with buying from an electrical distributor is they have
different pricing matrixes for diferent types of buyers. So two guys can
get different pricing on same qty, same product.

With that, I've bought aluminum shielded cat5 cable for my towers at
like .25 +/- per foot. We're talking the aluminum sheath that is like a
solid aluminum tube.

They have the ability to give you fantastic pricing.

Someone on this list (I think) mentioned www.skywalker.com
I can't vouch for the quality since I haven't ordered, but I think it
was $75 / 1000' box. If I recall, a $500 order was shipped free, too.

If you buy some, let us know how it compares.
