RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Internet Service Provider Options
I agree, use a WISP… or Find the nearest location that may have high speed cable / DSL and use www.ubnt.comhttp://www.ubnt.com Ubiquiti P2P wireless to backhaul the network to your building. Cheap, low latency, amazing results. Just don’t violate any ToS. I don't think you'll find one that will guarantee the bandwidth that you'll be subscribing to, but perhaps they will have a minimum CIR or something specific to guarantee at least some level of service... I liked Jason's suggestion about joining forces with the airport's IT shop. Bummer they don't have on site support. Is it a city airport? Might be worthwhile figuring out which governing body oversees the airport and reaching out to them and get some ideas. They currently have a T1 transport that they’ve outgrown. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on other options within Southern California that wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg. They only have about 5 computers and 5 VOIP phones but 3Mbps is hard to deal with when large files are being downloaded/uploaded simultaneously. RE: eduroam Advertising
Well, one big question comes to mind... Are you running eduroam as your primary campus SSID? I have personally witnessed major universities deploy eduroam as a side project, to see it go very underutilized. The best form of advertisement of its purpose and use is to transition it to being your primary SSID. Our onboarding SSID and process attempts to educate users on the purpose. I am seeing an explosion of universities that are enabling eduroam, so I suspect your problem with correct itself, even if you do nothing (it will become ubiquitous). RE: eduroam Advertising
When we rolled out eduroam, our ITS PR Team published the news in university's newsletter 'State'. http://unicomm.fsu.edu/documents/state/state-2014-03-31.pdf ITS put up webpages for eduroam: http://its.fsu.edu/Network/NetworkMainCampus/WiFi/eduroam ITS also made an announcement to university's mailing list, nolenet: ===Copy of announcement email== [cid:image001.png@01CF6075.92191070] In March 2014, Information Technology Services (ITS) joined eduroam, a free, secure, worldwide Internet access service that allows members to easily connect their mobile device to Wi-Fi when visiting other participating institutions. Please share this information with researchers, staff and students in your unit who may be traveling away from Florida State University this summer. When Available now What FSU faculty, staff and students can now connect to wireless Internet at thousands of participating universities around the globe at no charge. As a reciprocal service, campus visitors, including researchers and international students, from other participating institutions enjoy free wireless access when visiting Florida State. Impact Whether a researcher traveling overseas, an employee attending a regional symposium or a student studying abroad, all Florida State faculty, staff and students can access immediate Internet connectivity at any participating institution, and all guests from participating institutions can access secure Wi-Fi at Florida State without any special provisioning or preparation. Details Setup and login instructions for eduroam can be found on the ITS websitehttp://its.fsu.edu/Network/NetworkMainCampus/WiFi/eduroam. The eduroam network at Florida State is available only to guests. Florida State users should continue to use FSU's existing wireless networks, FSUSecure, when on main campus, and eduroam when they travel. A complete list of more than 5,000 participating institutions throughout the United States and worldwide can be found online at www.eduroam.org. http://monitor.eduroam.org/eduroam_map.php?type=all Find out more about eduroam by visiting the ITS eduroam Web pagehttp://its.fsu.edu/Network/NetworkMainCampus/WiFi/eduroam. RE: SSID jumping with Win 8.1 (Surface Pro 3) on Aruba
We haven't seen that with Windows but we have seen the same with OSX 10.10 hosts. Not during auth but at some point while the users are working. Our suspicion is that the OSX host is failing re-auth or for whatever reason is being disconnected from it's preferred network then join's the best next on list... However the client chooses. In this case potentially with no known networks available it's picking the best open network as it's probably instructed to do. We haven't gone in-depth with it yet, seemingly small impact and many things to do. Likely we'll be logging a case with Apple in the next month. -- Jason Cook The University of Adelaide, AUSTRALIA 5005 Ph: +61 8 8313 4800 From: The EDUCAUSE Wireless Issues Constituent Group Listserv [mailto:WIRELESS-LAN@LISTSERV.EDUCAUSE.EDU] On Behalf Of David Gillett Sent: Wednesday, 22 July 2015 6:07 AM To: WIRELESS-LAN@LISTSERV.EDUCAUSE.EDU Subject: [WIRELESS-LAN] SSID jumping with Win 8.1 (Surface Pro 3) on Aruba Anybody else seen this?
