Wireless Door lock systems

2017-03-11 Thread Brian David

All,

I was wondering what other Universities experience with wireless door locks?

How have the door locks been working? Is there a lot of maintenance with
your systems?

For example battery life, wifi connection problems, broken locks.

How many drops 802.11ac phase 2

2014-02-07 Thread Brian David
All,
I wanted to see how many people were planning on running 2 drops to 802.11ac
phase 2 access points?
Currently we are just doing a one for one swap when replacing an older a/b/g
AP's with 802.11ac phase 1 AP's
When you have new construction, do you plan on running 2 drops so when phase 2
come into play you will be all set for it?

RE: Handheld scanners

2013-10-02 Thread Brian David
Bruce,
I know you folks are an Aruba shop. Who makes the ticket scanners you use and
what model works the best? We have some very old ticket scanners that are still
using 802.11b.
We are looking to upgrade soon and would like to get some input from other
schools on what they use.
Thanks

We have several models of handheld scanners here at Liberty University using
WPA2-Enterprise [PEAP-MSCHAPv2].

One thing we have noticed on some models is that if the batteries run down
dead, you need to reset the date & time or RADIUS will fail. We have instructed
the users how to reset the date & time on these scanners.

We use MC9000 series scanners with telnet (TelnetCE) as the main protocol.
Telnet doesn't handle network interruptions very well, so we implemented a
telnet proxy (Wavelink ConnectPro) to help buffer the connections through
signal loss, AP roaming, etc. We are running on a Cisco 7510 controller with
1042 and 1602 APs.

Other than that, I haven't had any real issues on the wireless side. If you
get any more details on the application and errors they are seeing, feel free

Hey All,

We have been using some Motorola MC55 handheld ticket scanners (unsure of
Windows version right now) for the past couple years and they seem to be a bit
flaky according to the end users (only told us a couple months ago). We use
them to confirm tickets outside our theaters on campus. From my end I see them
connected almost all day long but when they go to use them they have hiccups.
The word I get is that they try and scan a ticket and if it doesn't work
instantly they grab a spare one and keep going. I am going to stand with them
one of these nights to see the actual process but haven't had the time lately
so can't confirm how they are running them. We are building a new conservatory
and I want to get the handheld piece figured out prior to deployment in that
building.

Config

Cisco 5508's, 2600/3500/3600 ap's
WPA2/AES enterprise (tried just tkip for a while and no dice) broadcasting

I'm just curious as to what models of scanners everyone else uses and what
issues/remedies they have come across. Does anyone else run the motorola MC55?
It doesn't have to be on a Cisco infrastructure as alot of the settings from
other vendors are comparable.

I didn't want to type out the whole infrastructure, so if you have a
question/idea please let me know.

Thanks,

We don't filter it yet, but Princeton has some pretty good pages with good
justifications for blocking (or getting users to disable these protocols).

For example:

The following link lays out the other protocols they filter.

Agreed. We are blocking bonjour between buildings, but not within. I wanted
to block within, but there are apps out there that the faculty want to use that
require it. That was the compromise I settled on... looking forward to
802.11ac now.

Had an Apple rep in recently and he stated Apple (Bonjour) has come a long way
since Appletalk on their network protocols. I wanted to believe him and then I
tried to use it on our campus. LAN only protocol that relies on mDNS
registration to bridge networks assuming all your end devices support it of
course. Reminds me of LAN/SOHO only protocols I worked with a decade ago. Why
not allow the device being mirrored to specify the device you want to mirror to
by IP address or FQDN. I don't think I'm asking for too much from the man but,
alas, perhaps I am.

Would be interesting to contemplate a petition or similar from the Educause
members to Apple requesting that they catch up to the fact that their toys are
invading the enterprise, that the enterprise doesn't run on AirPorts, and
therefor they might develop towards the enterprise WLAN, Then again, I doubt
they'd give a rip.

It's a shame that the sexiest devices on the planet have such shallow network
development behind them.

All,
It seems an alarmingly high number of wireless devices have returned to
our campus this week. After at least of year of steadily increasing numbers,
we are now seeing a roughly 40% increase since last December. At first I
didn't believe what I was seeing and opened a case with the vendor to confirm
reporting was accurate. Tied into this, we upgraded by a major version earlier
this month and I thought this could be related. Apparently not the case,
everything we've looked at tells us that the numbers are accurate. I'm still
looking a stats, but haven't been able to come up with anything yet.
Is anyone else seeing this magnitude of increase in devices over winter
break ?

All,

I would agree
that technical support from vendors of whom their products information is
requested, but IMO that is not an open invitation for some other competing
vendor to call or e-mail you and try to sell their products, especially if they
get the information about your situation from a discussion forum like this one.
This forum is intended for professionals in our field (user or vendors) to
discus and share information on a technical level.
