Any wireless project: requirement, RFP, gantt to share?

2011-07-05 Thread Christian.Heroux
Hello!

We are planning to upgrade our Wifi. Do you have any project documentation you
could share : requirement, RFP, gantt chart. I have checked in EDUCAUSE library
but wireless projects are old (2003).

RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Wireless Site Survey cost

2011-03-23 Thread Christian.Heroux
Hello all!

We had that problem a while ago. We did a site survey to evaluate the number of
AP needed to propose an architecture and secure a budget...by the time we had
the "go" AP changed and technology changed and we had to do another survey with
the new type of AP. The first one already cost a lot... we have many floor..
around 10K$

Finally We didn`t do a site survey, For the first phase we wanted coverage so
we used the rule of tumb 1 AP to cover a number of meter sq. We validated also
with the simulation available with Cisco WCS. We have deployed 112 AP and now
we will add density where needed.

We were planning to do buy a software airpeak, Ekahau and adjust our
deployment accordingly. I feel the wifi is dynamic not like cable and that add
to the challenge.

The university is always evolving, renovation, wall, office, corridor,
classroom so the site survey is only valid as long as the physical part don`t
change much...believe me here the site survey wouldn`t last more than a
semester with all the construction/evolution.

Maybe residence are more stable environment...

I know this is a crazy question with tons of variables but I am trying to at
least get an idea of what it would cost to do a wireless survey in our
residence halls. We have 7 buildings built over the years with a variety of
construction materials. Each building has 3-4 floors. We have a total of 1100
students living on campus.

Has anyone had a commercial wireless survey done and if so can you give me any
idea of what I would be looking at?

My intention is to do this via an Internship so I do not really want to shop
this out and put vendors through the paces. I just want to give an estimate of
what it would cost the college if we were to have a commercial provider do the
work.

RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] List Guidelines reminder

2010-08-16 Thread Christian.Heroux
Hello,

As far as I know, in Canada we don`t have a domain for universities. Limiting
the mailing list to .edu domain would block all Canadian Universities from
contributing to those mailing list. Please take that into account if you change
the rule.

I think Rick's mention of limiting to .edu was to limit to educational
institutions only. That should definitely include those in countries that use
.ac.?? country code domain names for educational institutions.

I have seen many noteable posts on the educause lists from .ac.?? domains.

I would agree, there have been notable posts in the past from
vendors either offering assistance with bugs or coming in with
general technical/standards know-how.

So long as it's not pushy, which it hasn't been in the couple of
years I've been on this list, I'm happy.

I guess the objection is that we may feel unable to rant knowing the
vendor is watching, but I feel equally unable to rant anyway because
the list is archived publicly and therefore the post will linger
forever in Google - so it makes no difference ;-)

Also +1 for the non-.edu access - we outside the U.S. appreciate
being able to share in a wider Higher Education discussion than our
own market, and hopefully on occasion have something to contribute!

regards,
oliver.

Does wireless access will replace wired access in campus?

2010-07-06 Thread Christian.Heroux
Hello,

We have a project that would require every student to have a laptop. That would
change the requirements in most classroom and we are looking at how to provide
network access in those room. Wireless seem cheaper than wired to connect to
the network.

For the moment, we recommend wireless as a complementary access not as the main
connection for work or study. The University would like to push for wireless
but technically we tend to prefer wired. In wireless, we don`t have control on
the air space like interference, performance is not the same and we don`t have
as much control over a user like shutting down a port.

What is your orientation about network access? Would you embrace Wireless only
architecture?

Hello,

Mcgill University here in Montreal has a similar policy,

We would like to have similar solution but we do not want to develop the
application our self. Have you come across a web applications that would do
this?

Site survey Wifi deployment software and methodology queries

2007-04-26 Thread Christian.Heroux
Hello!

We are planning a campus wide Wifi deployment. I am looking for
tool and advice on how to do site survey. We are looking at Cisco airspace
solution with controller. The test deployment 20 AP was done with consultant
and the actual site survey was to install and move around one mobile AP and
check the reception with a laptop to determine the final AP spot. This process
was repeated until the floor was covered. Not a very scientific approach and
quite costly.

>From my reading there are 2 types of site survey:

-Spectrum analyser to evaluate noise in your environment.

-Simulation software tool where you load your (autocad) floor plan and the
software will help to define the location of your access-points.

-Another survey is to install all access-points and walk the floor and take
sample reading with a laptop and software and analyse the result.

-Once you have your Wifi network Cisco seem to have some functionality where AP
can listen to each other and adjusted their power and maybe recommend to move
some AP around. (WLSE walkabout feature old aeronet solution) but at this point
you need to have your network install before using this tool.

I was looking at air magnet software to those 2 functions any comments?

What was your experience with those softwares? Any other that I should look at?

In only few lines, how do you proceed with your WIFI site survey and what tool
do you use?

Thanks
