Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] WCS 4.2
The SQL upgrade phase takes a long time in my experience. I don't know exactly how long, but in the two upgrades I've done I let it run and found something else to do in the meantime and eventually it completed. The "Solid" database they are using is apparently not much of a speed demon. If waiting doesn't work then you can find error logs that might explain what the problem is here: /opt/WCS/webnms/db/eval_kit/standalone Doesn't that "eval_kit" path name for the dbase files just fill you with confidence? :-) The last time I had issues I found a Solid problem (ahem) due to a full partition on our Linux server causing the dbase to fail. We moved /opt to a bigger partition and that fixed it. After the "automatic" upgrade to 4.2 completed I had the usual result from an upgrade: tomcat was running and the database wasn't so you got the nice shiny Web login page but login names didn't work. I've had luck with the sequence of the "StopWCS" and then "StartWCS" commands in /opt/WCS/ to get things running correctly. There's also a "WCSStatus" command that is handy. -Charles Charles E. RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] WCS 4.2
Our one-touch installer stalled during the .exe- said it saw multiple copies of WCS, but only one anywhere is what we were upgrading from. Searched the server far and wide for traces of any earlier versions, and all earlier upgrades went fine (except one that I'd rather not relive). I upgraded "manually" and all was well, except for many of the bugs that I hoped would be fixed our still present. Lee H. I made this error and put 5 - WLCs (2.5 WiSMs) back to the install wizard. We had to manually console into the WiSMs and start from new. We ran into this on a 4404. The solution was to connect to the console, clear the config NVRAM and then boot the 4.1 "backup" image. Once on the backup image, do enough of the configuration script to get the WLC on the network and D/L your saved 4.1 config. Then, save the config to flash and restart the controller on the main 4.2 image. The boot process will do the config upgrade for you. The release notes say they switched from a binary file to an XML based file format. I'd have thought the config process would be a little more robust and able to handle both versions.. Guess not. -JEff ** Participation and subscription information for this EDUCAUSE Constituent Group discussion list can be found at http://www.educause.edu/groups/.
Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] WCS 4.2
Doug, Thanks for the posting. I thought that each WLC on a WiSM can download 10 APs at a time. In 4.1.185.0 code we typically see 9 APs being download at a time when doing a bulk AP upgrade to LWAPP. On our 1230 APs the download seems to take approx 1.5 to 2 minutes. It sounds like you are seeing very different results in 4.2? We haven't deployed v4.2 into any production sites yet. Would you care to share any gotcha's with v4.2 in production that you have seen? Thanks, -Charles Charles E. We had quite a few issues moving forward with 4.2.62. If you have configuration issues after upgrading to 4.2.62 - DON'T - try to load a backup config file from 4.xxx code to the new 4.2.62 WLCs. RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] WCS 4.2
With 4.2, the process is no longer the dicey "backup WCS, uninstall, install new version, restore from backup". Now, it's an .exe that in theory does it all for you (didn't work for me, but that may be a problem unique to our WCS). I did the upgrade, and found that many of the major bugs have been fixed in the GUI. Unfortunately, there are still major problems, erroneous messages, etc. - at least with ours- and still almost 150 open caveats in the release notes, a solid 1/3 have no workaround. Caveat... interesting choice of word in this case. Lee H.
