RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Vendors contacting list's participants...
I'm all for strictly technical solutions to existing problems coming from the vendors' who's products were cited in the question. In my opinion though, the vendor who started this recent discussion did not come close to that. He noticed a lot of discussion about a competitor, and then decided to ask the list for suggestions on how to improve his product. In my mind, this was a veiled attempt to get some name recognition and attention for his product. I don't care who he was, or what standards bodies he is or was on or what certifications or credentials he has, it still is an unsolicited commercial communication. It was not an unsolicited technical communication which is what I think you described in the Apple inc. fantasy, and I agree I would be fine with that. I also would not be against a vendor posting an answer to a generic technical question with a technical answer. For example, suppose someone had a question about 802.11n and spatial streams and MIMO and a vendor who had some expertise posted a credible and helpful answer about the mechanics of the protocol. I think this would be helpful to the list, and would have the benefit of possibly engendering some good will towards and recognition of the vendor as well. I have seen this happen quite successfully in other discussion groups. RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Vendors contacting list's participants...
Jeff, That's a good idea. I usually find that if a vendor know that the issue is published on a list, they sometimes allocate higher level resources to get the issue resolved. RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Vendors contacting list's participants...
Guys, Unsolicited commercial communication should not be on this list. The number of "legitimate" messages about vendors posting have greatly exceeded the number of actual vendor posts. Could we all please agree on the commercial issue and stick to the technical ones? My personal Signal to Noise Ratio threshold has been exceeded. I find a great deal of value in this list I'd hate to have to unsubscribe. Thanks for your kind consideration, Christopher T. Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Vendors contacting list's participants...
That would make me happy, too. What does not make me happy is having contributions of our experiences on this list result in vendors (with whom I do not currently do business) contact us to try and demo their solutions based on my list comments. This is what Phillippe is talking about with "unsolicited commercial communications". If we complain on this list about technology and said technology manufacturer contacts us with solutions, that is a fantastic usage of the list. However, the above is not (in my opinion of course). == Ryan Holland Network Engineer, Wireless Office of the Chief Information Officer The Ohio State University 614-292-9906 holland@osu.edu On Aug 27, 2010, at 11:16 AM, Jason Appah wrote: > I know that we've been contacted about issues relating to our rants on > technical nagging problems, (again for support not sales) and this makes us > quite happy.
