I have now modified my build script to use a locally build msi installer and comparing it with a version build on my build server yesterday. There is no practical difference between the two msi files except the version numbers. Is that why I keep getting errors? I get the following error from Torch: error TRCH0279 : The table definition of 'WixVariable' in the target database does not match the table definition in the updated database. A transform requires that the target database schema match the updated database schema. And I get this from Pyro: Updating file information. Creating cabinet files. There will be '8' threads used to produce CAB files. MinorUpdate\Patch.wxs(13) : warning PYRO1079 : The cabinet Patch.cab' does not contain any files. If this patch contains no files, this warning can likely be safely ignored. Otherwise, try passing -p to torch.exe when first building the transforms, or add a ComponentRef to your PatchFamily authoring to pull changed files into the cabinet. I'm already passing the credential info into the CA. Do you mean passing it to the CA, to the pass to the utility and run impersonation in there? I'll have to look and see if there's a way we can guarantee that the utility will be called on first run, as our application is a web-based application, so it's a little more difficult, as it only needs to be ran once per server/install. I was guessing at what exactly you are doing. Yes get the utility to do its own impersonation. Hi tom, So their is a way to you use Wild card? As we have package without unwanted files. And in WIX project we want use a wild card to get all the files under package folder into MSI .Instead of specify each file as component to pull into MSI. We have integrated the MSi to dailybuild .So everytime we add bunch of files product.wxs needs to be updated ;so files get pulled into MSI.(which is frustrating for Tech leads).So tech leads wants to take care of the Filtered Website folder(through msbuild) and just want WIX to create MSI package out of the Website directory using Wild card. if it can be done with wild card to pull files under website directory into MSI .please let me know. In visual studio under build you need to define a preprocessor variable that points to the location of the root directory. Example: DatabaseDir=..\Folder. Then under build events you need to write a Pre-build Event command line to have heat generate the wxs file every time you make a build. Example: $(WIX)bin\heat.exe dir $(ProjectDir)..\Folder -dr INSTALLLOCATION -cg NameofyourGroup -gg -sf -srd -var var.DatabaseDir -out $(ProjectDir)..\wxsfolder\NameofyourGroup .wxs. I want to change the content of the config file based on the machine

You could harvest them all and use an XSLT to filter them. Hmm,
I think I would have one config file and conditionally modify it with CA's
like XmlFile/XmlConfig. I'd also try to eliminate the machine name dependency
and instead use a dev/test/live burn bundle passing a parameter via a
MsiProperty to the installer.

I use Wix to install drivers but only USB/HID drivers which are straight forward. The difx:Driver element goes with the component with File element of the inf file. Other driver components do not need the difx element. You need this: xmlns:difx=http://schemas.microsoft.com/wix/DifxAppExtension; And you need to add x32 or x64 difxapp extension depending on bitness of driver. But looks like you already know this? But judging from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa365247(v=VS.85).aspx , you could try prefixing the fully qualified path with \\?\ The Windows API has many functions that also have Unicode versions to permit an extended-length path for a maximum total path length of 32,767 characters. This type of path is composed of components separated by backslashes, each up to the value returned in the lpMaximumComponentLength parameter of the GetVolumeInformation function (this value is commonly 255 characters). To specify an extended-length path, use the \\?\ prefix. It's not just .NET. Many functions in the Win32 API have the same limitation unless you use UNC path names (in which case the limit is 32767 characters). The way it works in MSI isn't really mysterious. Basically the property name needs to be public (and that means it must be all uppercase). If WiX does its thing properly then you can open the generated MSI file with an editor such as Orca, look in the Properties table, and in the Property table there'll be a SecureCustomProperties property and your property name will be in that list. This works. If it didn't work then Microsoft would be all over it as a security bug. Generally speaking, people get account passwords from a MSI dialog and store it in a property such as MYPASSWORD, and then pass it to a custom action that uses it. However, you're using managed code custom actions, and it seems from the log that the (DTF?) code just does its own logging into the MSI log without caring whether there's a password in there. So it may be a DTF thing, not sure, and if it is then HideTarget etc won't help at all. The short answer is that if the DTF code is logging a connection string that typically contains a password, then it probably shouldn't. The Issue I am working on is for Production environment where content of Web.config is different for 5 machines at below node. scheduling agent http://web.service/keepalive.aspx LogActivitytrue/LogActivity /agent /scheduling For other environments we have only one web.config for each. But we have 5 different for PROD. And I don't want to place all 5 on all the machines ,So that was the reason I want to modify the node based on the conditions during Installation .Condition can be Environment and ComputerName. I was looking for some thing how to write CA's like XmlFile/XmlConfig where having more than one condition to satisfy.Please point out me good source. Steven, Tried adding: HideTarget=yes that didn't help Indeed! I'm even tried to remove logging from the custom action and I still see the password... I've even checked MsiHiddenProperties and see that PASSWORD is listed along with CA_DBAction... Not in SecureCustomProperties... I added secure=yes and now it is there.. Execute the installer with logging and it is still unsecure in plain text in the log. It must be between the MSI installer and the SQL connection that is being made. Thoughts? Running Wix 3.6, I had to follow one of many examples on the net on adding PackageGroup to my code to check/install .NET 4.0, just to get my Setup to build. Here's the thing...I know Setup requires .NET to run, but I DONT want to check for .NET, and I don't want to package the .NET installer. .NET is a Windows feature that is turned on by default on Windows Server platform that my applications runs on, and internally we check the .NET version anyway. We don't want to add an extra EXE to our deployment, and we don't want to embed it in our Setup. Is there a way to build a boostrapper without .NET checking? All the example code I have seen have the .NET PackageGroup/PackageGroupRef code. Is there an example of boostrapper code that doesn't require a .NET package? If I remove these Package statements, it doesn't compile either. Basically the property name needs to be public (and that means it must be all uppercase). If WiX does its thing properly then you can open the generated MSI file with an editor such as Orca, look in the Properties table, and in the Property table there'll be a SecureCustomProperties property and your property name will be in that list. This works. If it didn't work then Microsoft would be all over it as a security bug. Generally speaking, people get account passwords from a MSI dialog and store it in a property such as MYPASSWORD, and then pass it to a custom action that uses it. However, you're using managed code custom actions, and it seems from the log that the (DTF?) code just does its own logging into the MSI log without caring whether there's a password in there. So it may be a DTF thing, not sure, and if it is then HideTarget etc won't help at all. The short answer is that if the DTF code is logging a connection string that typically contains a password, then it probably shouldn't. Your right Phil, it is a custom action that is creating the connection string, as per the log below, luckily our connection string is encrypted... For me, I took out the custom action to set the property and that solved my issue... (I am using a Publish element in the dialog the sets the property for Web App Pool password.. I'm even tried to remove logging from the custom action and I still see the password... I've even checked MsiHiddenProperties and see that PASSWORD is listed along with CA_DBAction... Not in SecureCustomProperties... I added secure=yes and now it is there.. Execute the installer with logging and it is still unsecure in plain text in the log. It must be between the MSI installer and the SQL connection that is being made. Thoughts?
