I would configure the target system to generate a verbose setupapi log,
and study both (msi and setupapi.dev.log) verbose logs. Also the system
tool pnputil.exe is helpful to check which drivers are in the driver
store, etc, prior and after doing the install.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff550808(v=vs.8
5).aspx

While converting printer drivers from DifxAPI (InstallScript) installer
to DifxAPP (WIX) I ran into several issues. One thing that I recall
related to 'No matching devices found in INF' was that the
Product/@Manufacture must match the Manufacture name in the INF file.
This seems to be an implementation detail of the DifxAppExtension. (The
Package/@Manufacture does not need to be the same.)

We have several drivers developed by different groups over time. In one
case the INF has 'Company' and in another case the INF has 'Company
Corporation', or some other variant. The drivers are signed and
deployed so they cannot be changed. I packaged each driver in a
separate MSI, so that I could set Product/@Manufacture appropriately for
that driver. I then use a Bundle Chain to deploy the various MSI
packages.

There may be other reasons why there was no match for your hardware,
which is where the setupapi.dev.log file in WindowsFolder\Inf will be
helpful.

Re: [WiX-users] Driver Issue

2014-06-11 Thread Michael Ogilvie
Hello,

I don't think that is the issue.

If I install on a fresh install of Windows that has not seen our old
installer, the new Wix installer works perfect all drivers are installed
first time.

From what I can tell, it does look like the drivers are added to the
driverstore just not copied over to the C:\Windows\inf folder as a
OEM*.INF

Hello Phil,

Thanks for the info.

From the log files it looks like it uninstalls the stuff twice.

From the install logs of the MSI it goes through the uninstall then the
install then it looks like Burn also uninstalls the old version.

just does not make sense.

Generally yes, although you might not specify all of those attributes.
Each
MSI needs some information instructing it how to process upgrades, which
is
independent of how the MSI is launched, as part of a bundle chain or
directly.

The file paths may be in the SharedDlls registry entries,
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\SharedDlls.

If you ever marked them shared or permanent and installed them, then they are
stuck on the system. Changing the guid won't help if they're permanently on the
system under another guid, or in SharedDlls. This is a common issue on dev
systems used for testing (which should be done on VMs), and sometimes a
misunderstanding of how these things work. Setting Permanent or Shared is not a
nifty project setting that can be turned on and off. It is a system state as
soon as a component/file is installed with these settings.

A log might tell you more, maybe disallowing uninstall of file because another
client exists, that kind of text.

Thought of that, I created new GUID for those components and tried the install
again.

Still an issue on Windows XP

WIX 3.6 and 3.7ntries in the registry,

Are unique Guids set for each installed file, particularly the ones that aren't
being uninstalled?

That might not explain why it works on one OS and not another though.

I remove all files then do a fresh clean install of the bundle and then a
uninstall of the bundle and some of the files are left.

This only happens on Windows XP, Windows 8 cleans up everything

Many reasons, one of which is because they were created by the application as
it was running on the client machine, and weren't a part of the original
installation package.

We'd need more details to help much more.

See msidbComponentAttributesSharedDllRefCount. Your log shows this is
happening. It's too late for you to do anything in your install. If you know
it's a problem local only to your system, then remove them if you know the
Dlls are really not shared with any other apps.

Refer again to my previous post - if the files were EVER marked shared and
installed then they'll get added to the SharedDlls ref count. This sharing
is intended for sharing between non-MSI installs (which share using
SharedDlls) and MSI installs (which don't need it).

I reverted back to 3.6 and I still see this issue, so it's nothing to so with
the wix version.

Any ideas on why it would automatically restart the exe when the install
finishes?

I remove all files then do a fresh clean install of the bundle and then
a uninstall of the bundle and some of the files are left.

This only happens on Windows XP, Windows 8 cleans up everything

Key would be something like this: Root=HKLM Key=SOFTWARE\National
Instruments\LabVIEW\12.0 I need a wildcard for the version number

Sounds like the registration didn't finish correctly for VS2008. I'll try to
put together a repro machine and see if it is a one off or if WiX's setup is
missing something.

For the second issue, are you trying to add a Reference to your Custom BA from
a .wixproj? If so, it is possible that the reference is added as an Extension
reference and is trying to load your Custom BA as a toolset extension, which it
is not, of course. Take a look at your failing project and see if the
references look fishy.

Having the update URL come from outside the Bundle would be a very large
security gap. Essentially, any Bundle could be used to launch any other random
Bundle. That's not right. There is certainly work that could be done in the
wixstdba to support bundle self-update but I don't think passing the update
URL via the command-line is the right way to do that.

 1. I don't quite understand the question. The bundle self-update
feature allows a BA to check the internet and tell the engine that
there is a newer version of itself and to download then launch that
instead. It is not clear to me what the command-line has to do with it.

 2. Bundles are registered in ARP (aka: Program and Features, aka: the
UninstallKey). That's how you can click on the Uninstall button in
ARP and Burn launches to remove the bundle. You can search for it that
 way if you want.

 3. Again, the self-update happens inside a Burn bundle. It isn't
driven from a command-line argument. I may just be confused by not
 understanding your first question.

You always have the Bundle. It's cached. That's how ARP works.
