Probably more appropriate for the WSG CMS list, but short answer is yes,

a CMS would definitely address this issue. Other options include Adobe

[WSG] Carousel effect

2007-05-09 Thread Helen Rysavy
Hi

I was wondering if anyone could point me to the JavaScript that achieves
the carousel effect as seen on download.com http://www.download.com/
home page.

I have looked at the source but with my limited knowledge of JS I
haven't been able to work it out.

Any help is appreciated. It seems like a neat effect.

Thanks

[WSG] tabbed content within content pages

2005-09-01 Thread Helen . Rysavy
Hi

I have been seeing this thing quite a bit lately, where in one of the
content columns there are tabs - check out this site:

http://www.miavanloon.be/huifkartochten/essen/

I was wondering if there was some special trick they were using like an
I-frame so that they wouldn't have to have three versions of the same page
(not that I could see in the source anyway) - so that the content on the
left stayed the same for each of the different tabs that was clicked on the
right. I can see that this could be very useful for some things and would
like to know how it is done.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Re: [WSG] tabbed content within content pages

Yep this is nice design, however each of the tabs has different content,
unlike the other site I mentioned
http://www.miavanloon.be/huifkartochten/essen/ which has tabbed content
actually within the page. I wonder if they have several versions of the
page that loads up with each tab. Seems like double handling.

G'day

unlike the other site I mentioned
http://www.miavanloon.be/huifkartochten/essen/ which has tabbed content
actually within the page.

It may appear that way, but unless I'm missing something, there are 3
different pages:

1. There is a delay (loading a new page) when clicking on a tab
2. The links (in the tabs) are to different urls.
3. There's no (i)frame, object or JavaScript anywhere in the source

BTW, now some people living in Tokyo are thinking about planning local

Australia, Philippines and Japan are located in almost same time zone.

Line 298, column 70: general entity catId not defined and no default

Line 298, column 75: reference not terminated by REFC delimiter

Is there any way to get the page to validate?

[WSG] Captioning images - to DL or not to DL

2005-04-04 Thread Helen . Rysavy
Hi

I was wondering what the best solution was for captioning images where you
have a number of differently sized images on a page.

Is using a definition list the best way to do this and the most
semantically correct? Are there better ways?

The biggest problem I have found is having to set the width of the dl when
all the images are of a different size.

[WSG] Convert uppercase file names to lower case

2005-01-19 Thread Helen . Rysavy
Hi everyone

I have a large site full of mixed case file names with lots of broken links

broken.

Question - is there any program or a way of converting all the file names

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: [WSG] background-image:

2005-01-19 Thread Helen . Rysavy

What I was talking about and I think some other were too was being able to
have a href link attached to an image that is a background image,
particularly for banner images, so that they can link back to the home page
for instance.

Normally you can put a link right onto an image, but the question was, how
do you put it onto a background image.

2005-01-19 Thread Helen . Rysavy

Lovely, thanks - I will definitely keep this handy.

Now is there any way of making sure all the href urls in the site are in
lower case too? I use DW (please don't cringe) and normally when you make
a change it updates all the links. Some of the links are mixed case that
is why I need to do this as well.

Thanks

I usually use perl to solve such problems. Place the following script in
a directory and run it; all of the filenames in that directory will be
converted to lowercase. You may need to change the path to perl in the
first line, depending on where perl is on your server.

Later,
George

#!/usr/bin/perl
#makelc
#make lowercase all filenames in the current directory

use warnings;

opendir DIR, ./;
while(defined($file=readdir DIR)){
next if $file=~/^\.\.?$/;
$newfile=lc$file;
rename$file,$newfile;
}
exit(0);

Normally you can put a link right onto an image, but the question was, how
do you put it onto a background image.

Helen,

I use a transparent gif image technique. Simply place a solid colour
transparent gif the size of the required hotspot of the background image in
the link. http://www.seowebsitepromotion.com/enigma_log0403.htm illustrates
the principle and thinking behind the initiative.

Maybe I was dreaming but I recall reading somewhere that it is possible
to put links on images in the background-image: property.

Any direction toward that article will be greatly appreciated. I've

[WSG] styling ordered and unordered lists

2005-01-09 Thread Helen . Rysavy
Hi

I am trying to have an unordered list that is styled nicely with an arrow
graphic, however now I get the arrow graphic in my ordered list as well.

Could someone please have a look here:

http://learnline.cdu.edu.au/wip/css/liststest.html

and give me an idea of what I can do to get around this. The lists are
contained within a class called main left - assuming that this will
eventually become the left column.

Thanks very much

[WSG] Please explain use of html#____

2004-12-21 Thread Helen . Rysavy
Hi

I just read the brilliant article on font sizing at Usable type that Russ
pointed us to (http://usabletype.com/styles/sizes/) and had a look at the
style sheet in use and was wondering what this meant.

#wrap {
 padding:0;
 text-align:left;
 margin:10px auto 0 auto;
 width:700px;
 color:#333;
 font: x-small/1.4 arial, verdana, georgia, sans-serif;
 voice-family:\}\;
 voice-family:inherit;
 font: small/1.4 arial, verdana, georgia, sans-serif;
 }
html#wrap {
 font-size:small;
 }

the html# is used a bit eg and I was wondering what it meant...

#sideinfo {
 float:right;
 width:160px;
 border-left:1px solid #ccc;
 margin:0;
 padding:0;
 font-size:xx-small;
 voice-family:\}\;
 voice-family:inherit;
 font-size:x-small;
 }
html#sideinfo {
 font-size:x-small;
 }

[WSG] question about multiple stylesheets

2004-12-09 Thread Helen . Rysavy
Hi everyone

Could someone please enlighten me.

I have a situation where I have 5 style sheets imported by a main style
sheet (it was getting way too complicated so I decided to split of specific
areas into their own stylesheet)

In my main style sheet I have set my font in the body tag, e.g. 85% font
family etc.

My question is this - do the other style sheets set their fonts against
this body tag so I can say another font is relative to that one or do I
have to set it again? E.g. if I wanted sidebar text to be smaller in the
stylesheet that sets the sidebar, would I say that the sidebar is say .9
ems and it would be .9ems of the 85% that is set in the body tag in the
main stylesheet, or would it be independent of that and be .9ems of
whatever the browser is set at.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers

[WSG] 4 column css template

2004-12-01 Thread Helen . Rysavy
Hi everyone

Does anyone know where I can find a decent 4 column css template to use?

The glish.com fluid template really doesn't work for the project I am
working on, ideally a 4 column template that is fixed and centred as in
http://www.shockmedia.com.au/ - i.e. one that will resize properly to
800x600 resolution.

Thanks

[WSG] Persistent page indicator (page id) when you have two lists of navigation

2004-11-09 Thread Helen . Rysavy
Hi

I am trying to set up a page indicator in the sidebar navigation of this
template using descendant selectors to indicate the current page but it
doesn't seem to work if I use the following syntax.

I have given each page a body id and each list item in DIV sidebar an id as
well but it breaks when I use the following: I will be creating different
templates for the two areas Staff and Students so am not concerned about
that list.

body#studenthome li#studenthome a, body#studentsaccess  li#access a{
  border-right: 12px solid #000;
  {

Work in progress here:
http://learnline.cdu.edu.au/wip/ll/students/students.html

Another question - I would prefer to put the banner graphic into the DIV as
a background but I need to hot link it to the CDU home page. Is there any
way of doing this in CSS?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

[WSG] box model hack question

2004-10-11 Thread Helen . Rysavy
Hi

I'm getting a little confused with when to use the following hack:

width:760px;
\width:770px;
w\idth:760px

Is it something that should be used on every container/wrapper? What
happens if I don't use it? I've seen some CSS on sites that use it
everwhere and then others that don't...

Thanks

[WSG] Form fields in navbar causing IE to expand size of bar

2004-08-17 Thread Helen . Rysavy
Hi

Could someone please help me with this.

I'm trying to make a standards based site for Teaching Evaluation using the
current CDU requirements of banner and global nav (these can be seen here:
http://www.cdu.edu.au/visiting/).

However, putting in the form field into my global nav div cause the brown
bar (especially in IE) to become quite wide and not look right. I do
recall reading somewhere some time ago that the form tag causes some
issues with IE.

Any ideas as to what would be the best way to approach this?

The work in progress is here:
http://learnline.cdu.edu.au/wip/te/test.html

It almost works in Firefox but not quite. Note the form itself is not
working as it needs to be moved to another server. At this point I am just
concerned with the layout.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much

Re: [WSG] Form fields in navbar causing IE to expand size of bar

2004-08-17 Thread Helen . Rysavy

Thanks Nick

Probably the best solution would be to take it out of the globalnav bar all
together and put it somewhere else as I don't know how I can stop it from
wrapping.

Thanks for sending through the screenshots and even though Lotus Notes
doesn't tell me what browsers they are from, I can take a reasonable guess.

Cheers

Helen, it's not so much the form tag as the various form elements
that you use within it.

The visual display of form elements like buttons, dropdown menus, text
fields etc is generated by the operating system, not the browser, and
as such are notoriously difficult to incorporate into tight layouts.

  I see that you have styled the elements with CSS, but the support for
that styling is patchy across browsers - especially as regards size (of
text fields). I've sent you some screenshots of your navbar offlist to
show differences in the way the elements render across browsers. Note
some browsers don't render the CSS styling for from elements at all...

I notice that if the browser is narrower than about 800px, the form
elements wrap below the nav links - which is not a good look. It's a
good idea to design your layout to allow for the different looks and
sizes that different OSs will give you.

HTH
