Arguably, from the operator’s perspective, experimentation in software is more

Just my view.

Re: [wsjt-devel] Automatization QSO

2018-06-14 Thread Richard Stanley via wsjt-devel

Hi all

Already been done by sv5dkl his station has worked in excess of 13,500
stations since last July he has posted a howto on youtube.
I cannot see the point in a robot station or understand how people cannot
click for themselves and feel the need for autoseq on which makes the whole
operation only 2 clicks away from a robot station anyway.
I have completely stopped playing with FT8 and now pick off the few jt65/jt9
stations that are about.

Re: [wsjt-devel] Automatization QSO

2018-06-14 Thread Jim Brown
I must say that I'm getting awfully tired of the bashing of a fine
operating mode that requires a lot more operator sophistication than
those who have never used it assume. I'm a pretty good CW op (starting
in 1955), but I also concentrate on station building, understanding
propagation, and the other aspects that contribute to a successful QSO.
Ragchewing bores me to tears.

There are good reasons for the degree of automation that WSJT-X provides
for modes with short turnaround times. But a successful QSO includes
knowing where to point the antenna, when to be working what distant QTH,
knowing when propagation can make it possible, picking an operating
frequency within the waterfall. My computer didn't make the QSO -- me,
my radio, and my antennas made the QSO!

I mostly use WSJT modes for QSOs I can't make another way -- mostly 6M
and 160M, mostly E-skip, meteor scatter, and some tropo. About two
months ago, I managed a QSO with 5A1AL in Libya running barefoot with a
compromise antenna; my neighbor W6GJB and I had been chasing him for
three years. Libya is TOUGH from the west coast of the US. I think we
worked him on 17M or 20M.

I chase grids on 6M (only), and have found both JT65 and FT8 a huge
help. There are thousands of SSB ops living in rare grids who never
learned CW, but they can run FT8 and give me a QSO with 20 dB better
noise immunity than SSB!

And there's another HUGE issue -- most of us are surrounded by homes,
each of which, including our own, are filled with noise sources that
cover all but the strongest signals. K1JT's modes have given hams with
these limitations a chance to do ham radio.

I'm a genuine old fart, first licensed in 1955. I try to learn something
new every day, and in the spirit of ham radio, try to share what I've
learned with others. I suggest that the bashers adopt these objectives.

Re: [wsjt-devel] FT8: Three extra bits are available

2018-06-14 Thread Rich - K1HTV
Joe,

I would hope that the enhanced 75-bit message structure will allow for the
Tx3 and Tx4 messages to contain all of the 0-9 and A-Z characters. This would
allow FT8 to be used in a number of other operating events & contests such as
State QSO parties and Field Day exercises.

Can we assume that WSJT-X would NOT include the capability of inserting an
incrementing contest number? If that is the case, there needs to be a way for
an operator who has a station answering his CQ, to quickly insert of the
contest exchange in the Tx3 message. It would be helpful if WSJT-X could insert
a fixed string variable such as 3A MDC for Field day, a 2 character State
abbreviation, or a 3 or 4 character county abbreviation. This should be
followed by a space, with the cursor placed after the space. This would allow
for the user to quickly type in any additional data, such as a contest number,
after it. The station answering a CQ would have a little more time to insert
any additional contest data, such as a contest number, after the fixed format
part of the contest exchange in standard Tx4 message. If things are too tight,
the space could be eliminated.

If the above capability could be added, FT8 could be incorporated in many
worldwide contest events.

I found that in general, if I used the callsign K2EZ/R it worked fairly
well except when more than one caller responds. In that case I had to
manually sequence and put the other station’s call in, and generate a
reply message for them.

Rover rules require us to use /R or /ROVER.

2 meters didn’t have a frequency defined in the software but 144.174
seemed to be popular.

So it worked out fairly well.

There's not much I can add to what has been emphasized a number of times
here and on other WSJT user forums.

The structured JT-style messages in modes supported by WSJT-X are
designed for making minimal QSOs exchanging signal reports, locators,
and not much else.

You can send FD message exchanges as free text (max 13 characters), but
not with auto-sequencing capabilities and other operational
conveniences. Not really recommended.

More useful message formats and procedures for contests, etc., might be
built into a future version of WSJT-X. No good for this year's Field
Day, however.

[wsjt-devel] Field Day and Other Message Mod's

2018-06-14 Thread Al Pawlowski
It seems to me that changing the operation of the “tab 1” message list might go
a long way towards accommodating the non-standard messaging wanted for Field
Day and other situations - and probably enhance current functionality. I would
suggest:

1) Allow a “free form” field to be inserted in the Tx messages. The field could
be delineated by brackets (which would not transmitted), for instance, and
could be placed anywhere within the message.

2) Relabel the “next” selection targets to “do” targets and re-function so that
selected messages are those that are transmitted (top to bottom sequence as
now), while un-seleceted ones are skipped. The associated “tx message #” fields
would adjust to show the appropriate sequence number with un-selected showing
“skipped”.

3) A size (or available character space) indicator should be shown somewhere
with the message so that one could see whether message changes do not exceed tx
capability without having to count. This could be a number to indicate
remaining/available character space or just an entry limit (you can not enter
anything more after the limit).

Actually, suggestion 3 would be good regardless of whether any other changes
were made.

Hi Barry,

we are moving to git, part of that involved reorganizing the svn repo.
Each project now has a top level directory in the repo with a trunk and
optionally a branches and tags directory alongside. So the
wsjtx-superbuild location has moved to
svn://svn.code.sf.net/p/wsjt/wsjt/wsjtx-superbuild/trunk if you have it
checked out then you can relocate it by simply typing:

svn switch ^/wsjtx-superbuild/trunk

from within the workspace.

[wsjt-devel] Using the WSJT-X Superbuild CMake script (was: Re: SVN repository failure?)

2018-06-14 Thread Bill Somerville

Hi Barry,

we are moving to git, part of that involved reorganizing the svn repo.
Each project now has a top level directory in the repo with a trunk
and optionally a branches and tags directory alongside. So the
wsjtx-superbuild location has moved to
svn://svn.code.sf.net/p/wsjt/wsjt/wsjtx-superbuild/trunk if you have
it checked out then you can relocate it by simply typing:

svn switch ^/wsjtx-superbuild/trunk

from within the workspace.

Hi Barry and other users of the wsjtx-superbuild CMake project,

I have updated wsjtx-superbuild script to use the new WSJT-X git
repository on SourceForge. The updated wsjtx-superbuild project is also
hosted in a git repository in the WSJT SourceForge project. The project
is here:

https://sourceforge.net/p/wsjt/wsjtx-superbuild/ci/master/tree/

and you can make a read-only clone using git as follows:

git clone git://git.code.sf.net/p/wsjt/wsjtx-superbuild

The CMake script itself has been somewhat simplified, it still takes a
single configuration argument of WSJTX_TAG but the value is now simply
the WSJT-X tag name. If this argument is omitted then the stable branch
will be built, the stable branch is the nearest equivalent of the old
svn development trunk. Building a source tarball from other branches is
not currently supported. So for example to make a source tarball of
WSJT-X v1.9.1, e.g. for use on a distribution build server, you might do
the following:

mkdir ~/wsjtx-superbuild
cd ~/wsjtx-superbuild
git clone git://git.code.sf.net/p/wsjt/wsjtx-superbuild src
mkdir build
cd  build
cmake -D WSJTX_TAG=wsjtx-1.9.1 ../src
cmake --build . --target source

From then on the generated tarball and the instructions printed by the
above CMake build should be followed.
