Re: [wsjt-devel] WSJT-X vs JTDX

2017-06-12 Thread ea2ekh
Could you send me a randomly picked up subset of the JTDX exclusive decodes
together with a time stamp? I have a live data feed from pskreporter for a
visualization project and I can verify wether other stations received it and
what they were running.

I've got mostly solid data for the last 30 days (except for a couple of
problems with my data collection script)

For the data inclined, data is being fed to a Elasticsesrch cluster.

[wsjt-devel] WSJT-X and gain staging

2016-08-17 Thread ea2ekh
Hello,

First, I am late with my translation to Spanish but I will have time next week
(finally!).

And I've been wondering about proper gain staging in WSJT-X for optimum
reception. The manual suggests adjusting the input level and RF gain until the
noise level is at around 30 dB according to the program display, but at least
being audio minded it's difficult to refer to some external measure.

I am considering writing an article about this, giving some (hopefully useful)
guidelines. I will send it to the URE magazine but I can write it in English as
well and share, of course.

I have some questions:

Does the input level send gain adjustment orders to any USB device or is it
purely a digital gain applied to the sampled signal? At least on Mac OS X I
haven't observed any change in the input gain of an IC-7200 (it has a TI
PCM2901E)

What is supposed to be the unity gain setting for the input level slider?

How does the displayed input level relate to dBFS (decibels related to full
scale)?

I could measure that but I am not sure about its behavior on different
platforms (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X) and with different devices, so it would be
great to know what it's supposed to be.

[wsjt-devel] Baseband decoding option?

2016-04-13 Thread ea2ekh

(Feel free to put on your beards and stone me to death if I say something
stupid)

There is a new kid on the block, the Icom IC-7300, which is the first SDR
marketed as a SDR sold by one of the large manufacturers. (Other transceivers
with so called IF-DSP are actually SDRs using heterodynation).

The Icom DSP IF filtering has a maximum bandwidth of 3.6 KHz (for example in
the IC-7200) and the newly released IC-7300 shares the same limit.

However, the new IC-7300 has an interesting new feature: you can feed a
demodulated audio signal to the USB and ACC connectors, the same as the
previous models, but you can also send a 12 KHz IF signal, suitable for DRM
demodulation according to the "full manual" (page 12-7, "ACC/USB" option, which
can be either AF or IF).

In case this becomes a trend for similar rigs released by other manufacturers,
wouldn't it be interesting to support baseband decoding? Wouldn't it offer a
slight edge over the current AF decoding option?

Cheers,

Thank you very much. Is there a tentative release date for JTgrav? ;)

Alright :)

[wsjt-devel] Spanish translation

Hello,

While getting acquainted with the project sources, there is a contribution I
can make, translating the manual to Spanish. Has it ever been considered?

Ewword would be a problem, but a markup such as this one or LaTeX is not a
problem ;)

Indeed, it's the best approach.

No problem with that. Making the first translation is the hardest work,
updating it later is much lighter.

So, assuming that the rest of the controls are analog, your recommendation
would use the maximum possible resolution of the D/A, or am I missing anything
else?

[wsjt-devel] Suggestion - tuning power level

2015-12-14 Thread ea2ekh
Hello,

I have a suggestion. I am using a loop antenna (indoors for now, to add insult
to injury) and it needs retuning whenever y change frequency.

What I do is to reduce power to the minimum, press the program's tune button,
raise power to around 5 W and use that to tune the loop. The transmitter power
I use is around 20 W (bear in mind that a MFJ 1788 mounted indoors is not
especially efficient).

It would be really useful (and I think that it could encourage more respectful
practice) to have an option to preset the "tune" level to a fixed power level.
I know that "tune" here has two different meanings but it could be useful
anyway.

The setting would be optional, with the tune button working as usual unless a
preset level is selected in the preferences, and maybe it would be a good idea
to override it in case the user moves the output power slider when tuning.

What do you think?
