Re: [Xastir] KPC-9612+
As I remember it, the KPC-9612 is an odd beast - it's a dual-port TNC (both 1200 & 9600 baud modems in it). Xastir can't directly speak to both ports at once via KISS as far as I know - you might be able to get it to work without KISS. You could also set up Linux's AX.25 support directly, using mkiss to set up both ports - I did this at one time for my KAM (both 300baud and 1200baud modems). Fyi, being both a new Xastir user and the owner of about a 5 week old TH-D7A, I finally made the cable and connected the handheld to the desktop computer here at home. It was my first attempt at transmitting and receiving RF via Xastir. Thumbs up - things worked nicely. It was also a test of VMware with a Linux virtual machine under WinXP using serial ports. Curiously, based on the Xastir/Linux settings, I was expecting the Linux port to map to COM1 in Windows, but it's actually using COM2. It's probably something simple like VMware thinks COM1 is already in use for some reason. Next step is to get the KPC-9612+ to work. Re: [Xastir] Weather map question
Earl, This is where the compositing/layers come in handy. I have the radar image on the lowest layer, the county layout above that, the street map above, then the cities as the top layer. This way, Xastir does the layering work. 73 from 807, Richard, N6NKO Gerry Creager wrote: The WMS mapping only and solely provides a radar image. We are setting the TNC up for either Xastir-only operation, or Xastir + dumb digipeater operation. Take a look at the file to figure out which. In your case I'd recommend copying the tnc-startup.kpc3 file to a completely new filename, then editing the new file to do what you wish. Set up the Interface->Properties dialog in Xastir to call out your new file. The reason for a new filename is so that future updates to Xastir don't overwrite your changes. Anytime you do the "make install" option or install an Xastir binary package, the original file will get replaced. > I noticed in the tnc-startup.kpc3 script that some of the entries are not > set to take advantage of the new paradigm. Perhaps they are handled > differently? We don't do full-blown WIDEn-N digipeating in Xastir, nor do we recommend that Xastir stations set up their TNC's which are capable of it to do so. The reason is that _usually_ a good location for a WIDEn-N digipeater and a good location for an Xastir station are not one and the same. We provide support for WIDE1-1 digipeating in some cases with Xastir. Those cases are I believe with a Serial KISS TNC and with an AX.25 interface. > Does Xastir use KISS? It can. "kiss-off.pl" won't work from the Interface->Properties dialog. It's a Perl script file, so it's an entire program in itself. > I'm very close with this. I think one or two good swift kicks will get me > back on track. I would like to be able to use the digipeater with or > without Xastir automatically. Thank you all in advance for your support If you keep it _out_ of KISS mode and create your own startup file, you should be able to do WIDEn-N digipeating and Xastir at the same time. Plus igating if you wish. Just make sure you check with the locals before putting up a WIDEn-N digipeater. Ordinarily users shouldn't be doing this. -- Curt, WE7U. Xastir uses some features of X11 that may not be well supported in your XServer. That's my first guess. We use various geometric drawing functions with a lot of points, and also use bit-blitting functions inside X11 that may not be well supported. It could be that a map was getting redrawn if you're using any maps that have the REFRESH option enabled, or Xastir could have been drawing weather alerts at the time. Another possibility is that there was some sort of network transport problem between the two machines, or even that the Windows machine got too slow and something got lost somewhere. Hard to say exactly. -- Curt, WE7U. That'll make the weather alerts stand out more. Our weather alerts used to be quite a bit more intrusive and we toned them down quite a bit a while back so that the underlying maps could be read more easily. -- Curt, WE7U. I believe SmartBeaconing will work in this manner, but you'll need to set your station to one of the mobile station types (Transmit Station Option on the Configure->Defaults dialog). If I remember correctly we disable SmartBeaconing if it's a fixed station. -- Curt, WE7U. [Xastir] Smart Beaconing on internet?
Does Xastir do SmartBeaconing on the internet port, or strictly on the TNC port? I operate APRS from the 18-wheeler I drive, but I normally don't use a TNC, I use a Sprint data card instead. I found that UI-View will only do timed reports on the internet port, thus SmartBeaconing is "out of business" without a TNC. How about Xastir?
