Boot into runlevel 1 (ie, single user). Change password. Profit.

On most bootloaders (not terribly familiar with SuSE anymore), you can
do either of the following on the boot prompt (or append single or 1 to
your boot parameters):

linux single

or

linux 1

It should drop you into root without a password.

2007-08-03 Thread Gerry Creager
A couple of issues. GYX is Gray, ME. The forecast discussion for that
WFO shows a number of Special Marine Warnings, but then there's problem
#2: The centroid of the area of max concern is 'way off-shore and not
in that WFO's forecast area. It's pretty much due east of North
Carolina, unless I can't read simple coordinates anymore.

I think these are bogus. The ones Curt sent earlier are from also
identified by NWS WFOs but the timestamps do not correlate with warnings
issued today. However, they do look like they might be associated with
cancellations I found.

I think we need to see if WXSRV is dyspepsic as part of the forensics.

You can download VMware server at the following link:

http://www.vmware.com/download/server/

You do have to register at the site to get a serial number, but it is still
a free download. It sounds like you are going with Fedora, so you have a
choice of either creating a dual boot system or installing Linux under
VMware in Windows (I base that on the other messages where it sounds like
you want to keep Windows on the laptop). There are advantages and
disadvantages to either approach. With VMware server, you can create your
own virtual machine and install your Linux distro of choice in that machine.

There are also some pre-built virtual machines available per the
HowTo:VMware in the Wiki, and if you go that route, you only need VMware
Player, which is available at http://www.vmware.com/download/player/, and
there is no registration if I remember right.

I think before giving VMware a whirl, I would install Fedora as part of a
dual boot system, which it sounds like you are on track to do, and if there
are any problems with Fedora detecting/using hardware, then you could fall
back to using VMware.

OK, this is rough because I'm not much of a linux guy (Solaris is my
day job) and I haven't done SuSE at allm but this should be close.

easy way: if you put your user account in the sudoers file, do this:

sudo passwd root

it will ask for your password, then it should ask for a new root
password (twice).

Hard way:

boot from a LiveCD, mount the hard drive, edit /etc/shadow as
follows: on the line that begins "root:" delete all that garbage (the
encrypted password) between the first and second colons. Reboot the
system and root will have no password.

If I reload Linux (openSUSE), will that take care of it?

well yeah, but so will buying a new computer. (:

Forgot the HowTo VMware in the Wiki has an example of forcing the serial
port to a specific com port. This copy/paste from the Wiki sets the 2nd
serial port to COM4.

serial1.present = "TRUE"
serial1.filename = "COM4"
serial1.autodetect = "FALSE"

If using VMware Player, you'll have to edit the ".vmx" file with a text
editor. The vmx file will be in the "My Virtual Machines" directory or
wherever the virtual machines are stored.

The lines for the first serial port should look like the three below:

#serial0.present = "TRUE"
#serial0.fileName = "Auto detect"
#serial0.autodetect = "TRUE"

You can add another port as follows:

#serial1.present = "TRUE"
#serial1.fileName = "Auto detect"
#serial1.autodetect = "TRUE"

It is also possible to force each of them to a specific COM port, but I am
traveling and I don't have all of my "ammunition" with me.

Re: [Xastir] Areas of Maximum Concern not showing

2007-08-03 Thread Eric H Christensen
GM Gerry,
As soon as I get back into town I'll see if I can snag them for you. I'm going
to be leaving town when I get out of work today so I'll be away from my *nix
box and the Internet.

FWIW, the error packets that were being shown in the terminal screen did were
not complete packets and thus did not contain any identifier.

73s,
Eric W4OTN
